As a Panamanian/Naturalized American, i do agree Carter Was a Dip Shit president; The American Presence benifited Panama to a very good extent; and both countries benifited in the process. Panama Economicly and the Us able to Maintain the Southern Command to over see peace in Central America & the Caribean in a much more simple fashion. & yes keep those freaking Colombians that have invaded Panama with with drugs and slaughter.

How naive can people be? The Canal Operated by the chinese??? hahaha. Nvr! In actualliity the Canal was being run by Panamanians & the Us since the late 80's. In an effort to get everything ready for the hand over in dec 31 st 1999. So plz people dont talk crap! As a matter of fact the Pilots that guide the ships through the Canal are Panamanians, and guess what? they make excellent money about $6k per month.

The canal expansion is so that they can pass what we call "Panamax" which are the biggest ones that can pass through the canal but something that now one has noticed here is that our goverment is being manipulated by the U.S. goverment and our presidents are lieing pices of shi... The U.S. is doing all the projects that are going on up to date even the ones for turists... I think the canal is going to end up in the hands of the U.S. agin... just wait and see....

The US built the canal but never intended to keep it for themselves. The US was actually beginning construction of new, wider locks when WW2 started and construction was halted.  This is why ships like the carrier Essex and battleships like the Montana were designed with beams greater then 108 feet.

I find it interesting that the Panam Canal is now "operated" not by the Panama Canal Commission as stipulated by treay, but by a Chinese corporation, staffed heavily by engineering personnel seconded from the Peoples Army. Funny that?

Panama Canal is not operated by a Chinese Corporation staffed by Chinese Army Engineers, its 100% Panamanian Engineers. Panama Canal Authority is 100% owned by Panama who run canal very efficiently.

There are 40,000 U.S. citizens resident of Panama who have chosen to live permanently. So why have they done that if Chinese are controlling things since the U.S.pulled out ??

This is nothing new. Panama is simply completing the Third Locks Project that the US started around 1939. The excavation for the locks at Miraflores and Gatun was actually finished but by then the war was on and material to build the locks could not be obtained so it was abandoned. The water filled cuts can be seen beside the present locks.

About 50 years ago there was a plan to expand the canal with nukes, it would also have flattened the canal, getting rid of the need for locks.
