  • linkin park ...............ok but can you help me with cemetry gates by pantera

  • you are sick! nothing else matters is the but can to do some linkin park please, that would be amazein

  • thank you soooo MUUTCHHH!!!! :) i had known this riff for a while from "marty shratz" hes a great teacher and all but he didnt help me out with the fingerings and rythm like you did great job man :) ive got a lot more of you vids to check out now xD this is gonna be a night FULLL of guitar thanks to you!

  • he plays it with different fingers because he slides from the 6th to the 9th fret on the A string

  • Wow, you're a very good teacher! I can sort of play it real slow, and I'm only playing guitar for 6 months now, without lessons irl!

I was actually just searching this for tha lulz xD

  • actually... that is Ab minor mate!!! oh you are the best

  • tele doest sound good in tis riff

  • YOU ARE AN AWESOME GUITARIST!!

    =D

  • YOUR THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD!!!!

  • i will never learn this :'(

  • @TrobesHD yes you will keeYOUR HEAD UP!!!!!

  • great tutorial but ive found that if you start each position with an up stroke its a lot easier cause you can do alternate picking all the way through:)

  • What kind of guitar is that? A Tele?

  • I figured out how to play this on my cello!

  • i love this lick but damn my pinky doesn't agree with me

  • my hand is to small :((

  • @Mr99Jake Nonsense i have pretty small hands and i can play it (even though my fingers hurt :p )

  • love the guitar dude, I'll check back at this lesson when i finish up with californication ! :)

Thanks for putting up your videos, they're great ! :)

  • pinky keeps locking straight like a lil bitch

  • hey great lesson!

  • i just loooove your accent!

  • :D

  • ahhhhhhhrgh it fuckin looks so easy...:-(

  • Hey mate, I'm really picky with guitar tutorials and stuff and i always get annoyed when they don't do it right but this was really great, I loved it! What made it great was that you took time to study the way John plays it and stuff, that's was cool. Good stuff! :) You're a good player too!

  • in the F# chord I use the ring finger instead of the pinkie too... just like you said John does!

I'm not perfect while playing this song yet, but when I change from B to F# I slide the ring finger from the A string 6th fret to the 9th fret making an effect similar to a grace note...

I guess that John do the same, so that's why he plays the chord with "less consistency"

    XD

  • 6 people cant play guitar

  • nice tutorial man!

  • is that a blues junior

  • i use fingers to play this, is that bad ?

  • @Jazda1Jazda if it sounds bad then its bad. if it sounds good its good.

  • @Jazda1Jazda its better than trying what i used.... O_o

  • I am also sure that the F# chord John plays after the B chord on 7 during the Chorus is actually played on 9, like so:

    E ---------

    B ---11---

    G ---11---

    D ---11---

    A ---09---

    E ---------

Again this is easier for the sake of a transition: the one from the F# chord to the C#m9 chord (both based on the 9th fret).

  • With regards to John playing the F# chord (4th chord) in the main riff the way he does (i.e. not using the pinky on the A string - as shown between 4.05 and 4.16 in this video), it is because he SLIDES from the B chord (3rd chord) to the F# chord on the A string using his ring finger. Playing the F# chord in that position makes the transition back to the G#/Ab chord easier as both those chords maintain a similar shape and eliminate the pinky (until returning to the E chord).

  • @darthflea But I see mrOly88, CrazyTrain0111, MrStoryoftheyear, TheALyon8, and SuperHyphy420 all touched upon this already :)

  • Hey Justin, I´m Josue, from Honduras, Central America. I´m writting you this comment to make you proud of your online teaching, even guys like me who live in small countries are learning how to rock because of you. Thanks a lot.

  • Can i play this without the last one?!. Because the last time i got hurt x3

  • WONDABAH!!

  • learned the first bit in 1min awesome lesson!!

  • Justin is a best guitar teacher on youtube ... thank you

  • Best teacher on Youtube by a freakin' mile!!!!!! :D

  • anyone else having trouble making those chords sound right? having a hell of a time with all the muted strings in the middle of those suckers... the first three in particular

  • To anyone who has mastered the song, do you hold your pick so there is less sticking out of your thumb for more control?

  • Dude I ADORE RHCP! ♥

  • after watching most of marty schwartz's lessons and most of your I can safely say that you are a much better guitarist and teacher. thanks a lot Justin :)

  • exelente tutorial

  • wow, that guitar sounds amaizing!

  • Thank you so much for your superb teaching. I could never afford lessons.(even though I work in a guitar shop). I have three kids, two in college. I love playing this song. Thank you so much Justin. ( I tell everyone about you)

  • My pinky hates this song SO MUCH!!

  • holy hell, been working on the riff for a while.....trying to suss out the chords now & i think they're even tougher to nail.... frusciante is a mother to cop

    sometimes!

  • I know this song, and it is a major bitch to play it just right, Good-Job :)

  • i find it too difficult to hold the E string with my thumb...you need a guitar with thin neck to do this maybe..cool technique though

  • When I do those type of chords (3rd part), I can't do them, they are kinda weird from, especially bariring the first 3/4 strings alone + couple other strings with my other fingers. They are getting muted and sound is terrible. Any advice?

  • justin sander coe best guitar teacher ever!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • unlearnable :D

  • By the Way. The reason Frusciante holds the F# like that is because he slides into it a lot.

  • Please can you do Money for Nothing (dire Straits)?

  • You're one of the few teaching this song correctly. Thank you :)

  • Thanks, Justin! You are a great guitarist and a great teacher!

  • does he use alternate picking

  • @deathafi Did you actually watch the video? Maybe try to go to 6:43 in the video.

  • great playing and a great lesson too,may you post more RHCP tutorials ahead

  • thanks for the perfect guitar lesson. i got the riff it in like 20 min :D

  • I thought you were barring the first few strings with your index finger at the very beginning. So glad I was wrong... I suck with barring strings. xD That's why I could never learn to play the Stairway to Heaven intro properly...

  • @AvengedTony Just keep working on your string barring and you'll have it I promise it took me a month. I believe in you bro.

  • @TheALyon8 Hahah, thanks man!

  • @AvengedTony I've been playing three years and on this third year I just got into barring chords. It hurts but it's well worth it for alot of songs use them.

  • my favorite part 8:34

  • please upload dani california...please

  • way better than marty he doesnt teach everything about a song

  • I so want to learn that down up down up picking. Why is it that I can do it right even really fast with down down up down up down up but can't do it almost at all with this kind of pattern.

  • Genius Justin

  • hey i came here to hear the riff and possible download it do you have a link?

  • Thx a lot for this lesson! I really like that one can´t make a mistake because everything is described detailedly. best guitar lessons on youtube

  • thanks alot for this

  • on the 11th fret and 12th fret thing before it goes back down the neck, John plays 11 on the first string 14,12,11,12 on the second string. and the second time he plays 14 & 11 on the first string then 12,11,12 on the second string. While an overdriven plays 11 1st string 12 second string 13 third string, then 14 1st string 14 second string 15 3rd string then 16 for the first 3 strings then when at 16 play 4 x then do the stuff before

  • It's a slide from 7 to 9 on the 5th string, but other than that flawless!

  • fuck up your picking is impossible

  • thanks justin!

  • Thank you for this. I've wanted to learn this song ever since I first head it when it was released.

  • is that a mushroom on your arm justin?

  • @bugio22 i think it's an arrow! :o

  • the reason why he changes his finger position on the fourth position is because he slides

  • Very good

  • Awesome! will you add HERE WITHOUT YOU BY 3 Doors Down on your list of songs to teach.

  • @The350zman1 Why? Thats a fucking terrible song.

  • @MGOPantallica your stupid!!!

  • made my day! thx

  • may I request "anyone can play guitar" by radiohead :) thanks

  • I'm French and I love what you do!

  • you make this really good justin, dont get me wrong the song is amazing, you have a sense of helpfulness that marty or any other teacher lacks alot of. you're really good at this song and any other, is that a matching guitar and amp... :)

  • These are quite simply the best instructional videos on youtube. Thanks to you I'm playing songs that I never thought I'd be able to play. Little wing and now this one. Really motivated to continue practicing seriously now. Thanks!

  • @ivanljubicicac123 lol that is awesome. justin's the man for guitar lessons on youtube, no doubt

  • @ivanljubicicac123 dude marty is cool im subscribed to both justin and him

  • @metsjets315 Yeah but marty doesn't make solos for songs he only gives the intro or riff and sometimes the chorus, he never go further cause he wants us to pay him for the rest, but at justin's channel you always have full songs ( except Riff#1, Riff#2.......)

  • Like always, thanks ALOT for everything you've posted and taking your own time to help us guitar players haha. You've taught me alot, from changing strings to this. C: your videos, by far, take shits on all the other tutorials.

  • I wish you were my father...thank you for this great lesson!!!!!

  • Why the heck would ANYONE click the dislike button? Why? Even that (#1) bothers me!!! What could have been wrong with this lesson? It was awesome and Justin played it perfect!!! THANKS Justin!!!

  • wow..at first i thought..fuck its hard.. but after 10 minutes of playing its actually not that hard at all.

Its just hurtful for ure hand if you are not used to this hand position, but otherwise pretty easy riff once u got that down.

Thanks for the lesson justin (:

  • Great lesson... Learnt to play it at the right tempo coz u taught it the right way... \m/

  • AWESOME LESON..... CHIERS HELOO FROM SERBIA

  • @Hakan625 I wouldn't worry about what finger he uses; do whatever works best for you because as long as you hit the rigth note it doesn't matter what finger, toe, nose, dowel rod or frisbee you use. He even says make the shapes however works best for you.

  • Riff suggestion: Razorlight - America

I'd love it if you done one on that man, keep up the good work!

  • @Tmal10 I agree with that one man!

  • is that a pan cyan mushroom tattoo on your arm?

  • I have taken a few lessons in person but I have gotten more direction from you and your website than anywhere else. You are the best guitar teacher around and you provide your bank of knowledge for free. Thank you for teaching me how to play guitar and keep up the good work!

  • отлично! большое спасибо за урок, привет из России

  • Finally!!!! I have had this tune as a ringtone for years, then my phone broke, so now I have to learn this song so I can hear it all the time again! :)

  • I'm really liking the riff series! How about some Allman Brothers?

  • I've never seen a video with no dislikes.

  • Greetings from Upper Noe Valley, San Francisco, big yes to this one. another jewel for my music box from Justin. Thank you molto

  • I'm liking the ratio of likes to dislike...

  • hey-o ... its justin sandercoe-oe oe

  • Bah i'm done with picking! I find it very unnatural for some reason no matter how much i try i lose precision eventually hitting the strings, this has always been the case for me, fingerstyle for me! way forward.

  • I always wanted to learn this song and with this tutorial you've made me a big favor. Thank you so much! you rock!

  • I've found this riff is much easier to play tuned a half step down playing Am, Fmaj7, Cmaj, Gmaj (hendrix-style thumb over top)

  • thank you justin, for another awesome lesson ;)

  • Comment removed

  • I'm so jealous that I know for a fact that I will never be able to do that

  • @Izaak247 dude, it is ONLY PRACTICE. It really is - i fyou put time into it you will get rewards!!

  • Gaaaah! I love the Peppers! Thank you very much for this lesson.

  • Good lesson. Thank you for showing how the picking. Till now i couldn't do it properly.

  • You should check out Igor Presnyakov acoustic version of the song, it's awesome. Besides Justin, Igor is my idol!

  • That's one nice punchy sounding tele.

  • @fazialpalmierung I note with barely concealed amusement that, you have the word 'palm' in your username and a fixation with a repeated motion involving the hand and the p*n*s.... 8-)

  • Awesome-ness! And that Tele sounds and looks sweet! Thank you!!

  • ahhhhhhhh too fast. gotta keep practicing

  • two words... Thank you

  • I can play this at a moderate speed, but I find it is quite a challenge to get it up to full speed and maintain it, as when attempting to play with a bass player
