  • Anyone here read Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich? Anyone?...

  • I agree that all teachers/professors should podcast their lectures and provide notes online. Too much time is wasted in classes taking notes and listening to lectures and not enough time is spent interacting in class and actually applying knowledge.

  • Destruction is the simplest form of creation

  • @cassidyteufel

That is a horrifically nihilistic opinion.

  • Hi!

I am a public school teacher and I think your unsupportive attitude may cause more harm than good because kids need to feel secure and a guy like you bashing , using a 8 year old kind of voice will bring 'em to doubt and may destroy confidence they have toward school. Also, high school is there for learning but also for socializing, Real investment and a desire to go further will come when they reach 17-18 years old. So at college (cegep) in Quebec, students will get more deeply involved.

  • @sylbeaucerock I wonder if that confidence is rightly placed. I find myself three quarters of the time at work bored out of my mind. I'm sure most school children would also agree they spend about three quarters of their time in class bored out of their minds. I know I did. If you labor under the delusion that the primary objective of the educational system is to prepare students for working life, then I find it perfectly reasonable to assume that the schools are doing a fantastic job.

  • i'm baffled as to how someone so completely out of touch with society and education could think they know how to run an educational system. spend some time working in the schools and dealing with the culture and social problems the kids and teachers are dealing with for a few years then come and spout off. all objectivist morons think they can solve problems sitting by themselves in a room hypothesizing. quit your childish pontificating and go do something relevant in the world.

  • DUMB FUCK. THE REASON WHY TEACHERS DON'T USE THESE FORMS OF TECHNOLOGIES AS LEARNING TOOLS IS BECAUSE THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON STANDARDIZED TESTING.

  • I also have to add that I don't quite like the "teachers are idiots" angle. I understand that you're frustrated with the school system, and for good reasons, but your language is unnecessarily abusive. There are plenty of bad teachers, but even the good ones can be burdened by inadequate department funding, asinine state and federal standards and large classes filled with students beaten down by aimless busy work to care about class. Anger means you care, but change begins with compassion.

  • @warbread

The "teachers are idiots" angle is a theme associated with a series of video. That angle correlates with statistics that demonstrate that the worst students enter education school, graduate from them, and then persist as public employees.

I am not frustrated with the system; however, I do possess moral outrage against public school teachers.

  • cont....

Far from my language being abrasive, public school teachers merit worse including their identification as being corrupt and evil; however, I don't have statistical studies to support that generalization so my judgment remains a hypothesis.

Change begin with selfishness, when individual parents refuse to sacrifice their own children upon the altar of the public good.

  • @jwoodswce do you know why teachers become teachers?

teachers become teachers beacuse they hate to study. for them studying is boring.

thats why they want to be teachers. some years of teacher education.

then they go out to teach, but they do it because of the income and that they don´t have to teach away enything. when they ready for class they skim trough a few pages in 5 minutes beforce they begin an hour of boredom. some of them are so tired their job that they begin to tell personal stories

  • @socializard1

    1) Do you always start with an insult? How am I a troll on my own video?

    2) I did not say to give students hardware, but to give them assignments leveraging their own technology.

    3) Subsequent to my making this vid, I have found instances of some of these ideas being acted upon to improve instruction.

  • I would take this argument a step further - we don't actually need the player device at all. Podcasts of lectures and supplemental material could be hosted and streamed from the school's website, downloaded if desired, but also usable for people without a personal computer or portable device. Even better than recording just the classroom lectures, the school could provide a pre-recorded lecture by the teacher which is uninterrupted by classroom discussion and free of speech errors.

  • I bet he watches alot of porn

  • Do you really think all (or most) public school teachers are idiots? It seems you're assuming a lot. As a teacher, I am a very caring, understanding person, and I love teaching my students. I am not afraid of technology, in fact, in my school, we use a lot of technology (smart boards, class computers, etc.). We actually do podcast some lectures, and I have my own website that is updated daily with homework and classwork that may have been missed by absent kids. Please, visit a local school.

  • @rebelrathbone

First, you report that you are a school teacher; meanwhile, according to your profile, you are only 19. Can you explain that? As I work out the math, it appears that you might be an adult seeking teenaged hookups on-line.

Second, as for the substance of your comments, I intend a vid response, so that I can be expansive; however, I will delay pending your clarification about whether you are something other than a liar or statutory rapist.

  • @jwoodswce

I sent you a personal message. Thank you for your response, but I respectively disagree that all teachers are idiots. I actually agree that technology is a very important part of teaching and learning.

    Thanks.

  • This guy has too much time on his hands. He is making general statements about teachers as being bad or stupid. He must have gotten his feeling hurt by a bad teacher. Teachers are using technology better than his mp3 idea. If he was well informed and intelligent he would be better at his critical analysis of the problems of education than just his rabble rant.

  • @Mrpargmatic ...bullshit. In class we were told to calculate some huge sum using a calculator - I didn't have one so I used my phone - it got confiscated for being a phone - it did EXACTLY the same job as a calculator - So don't talk about teacher technology awareness.

  • you should have listened to a lecture on making a good youtube video.

  • College teachers are the real killers, they care too much about stupid sheets and " work to be done over the course " , if someone came in the lessons drawing and drawing, entertaining people and writing arcticles about everything the teacher would see it as " not doing their work " and shout at the student.

  • good for you you have the right perspective teachers are there with garbage fillers to fulfull an 8 hour shift to get paid real learning comes from self not a classroom full of twitchy and bored peers who all learn at completely different paces .

  • + 10.

I use my MP3 player as you do. Moreover: English is my second language, and I live in an Spanish speaking country. The MP3 player provides me with +5 priceless daily hours of English listening time.

In a rational society MP3 players would put mediocre teachers (most of them) out of business.

It will be a pleasure to listen to this video on my MP3 player.

  • Also, as just a little cheap-shot [since I can tell you love being the protagonist], perhaps they don't want their students playing with their phones and computers all day so they become obese and unhealthy like yourself.

  • You're making the naive assumption that kids would use their mp3 players strictly for learning.

Who draws the line between MP3 players and Smartphones, which are filled with apps to keep kids from concentrating.

On the ethics side, who is to say that every parent can afford to buy child an mp3 player. I can't see a school buying some and loaning them, and you can't do a project with mp3 players and exclude certain kids. You take 50$ for granted, but what about parents with 2 or more kids.

  • Comment removed

  • actually mp3s are good and bad my sister uses em for book recording reading but the thing i hate is kids obessesion with them like i rember one day at school. a kid was listening to his ipod under the table the teacher told him to put it away he put away then 5 minutes later he listening to a kanye west song he heard like 100 times then the teacher takes and he acts like nothings wrong. i am a kid and i think kids arent using them for full use i think they just want em for listening to music.

  • You know, this might be a very good idea.

If a parent buys their child an mp3 player and downloads these things on it before they give it to them, they might just listen to it.

  • my teachers simply gave up on many of us. many teachers worried more about their coffee cups than a class lesson. all i can say is that manure was slightly more useful than many of my high school teachers. it's quite sad.

  • My son is blind and attended a commutity college. He had to ask permission to tape the classes, he was granted permission to do so, however he had to agree not to let the tapes go anywhere. The schools don't want parents to know what they are really teaching in the classroom.

  • F,

"...you have effectively failed to convey a point..."

I explicitly state in the beginning that I am responding with a concrete example for public school teachers that are unable think conceptually. Ironically, you are to dumb to follow.

I very clearly state in the vid, "How is it that teachers do not love such a productivity tool? I submit that it is because the teachers are too stupid to know how to use them." Get the point!

    cont...

  • Newsflash idiot, its the parents. Why are kids bringing ipods to school? They could care less about learning, and WANT to listen to something else other than their teacher. Parents have become less involved in their kids lives, especially with the common trend today with dual income families, and children being left home alone. Core family values, and an ethical sense of being responsible for one's own actions have WAY more of an impact than attempting to get teachers to podcast lectures.

  • F,

Typical of teacher irresponsibility to blame the parents, students, and culture without any introspection about the educators flawed methodology and values.

As this vid explicitly states, this concretization was presented as an affirmative step toward improving education to counter criticism that I only criticize. I could have made a video about the proper leveraging of skill assessments as a teaching tool, or the individualization of assignments, but this example was much funnier.

  • I'm not a teacher. There is no attempt to improve education here. Only BS rhetoric that serves no other purpose but to grab attention to youself and your agenda.

While I wouldn't doubt you actually pay attention to your kids and ensure they get a good education, and instililng the ideas and values that foster a proper mindset, many parents today do not.

And it wasn't funny, only an eye roller as to the off the wall ponderings of a mildly educated man.

  • F,

    "I'm not a teacher."

As I suspected that you were a parrot, I was careful not to accuse you of being a teacher.

"There is no attempt to improve education here."

I suggested leveraging free third party source material at no incremental monetary cost to be directed toward individualization of instruction, such as providing remedial instruction or enrichment for advanced students. How can you not recognize that as an improvement?

    cont...

  • Further, checking iTunesU, I see that the School of Education and Human Development at my alma mater offers a two credit course to teach the integration of podcasts with instruction.

"...grab attention to youself and your agenda."

Trollie McTroll whines about those that do what you don't?

    "And it wasn't funny..."

Really? B7th said otherwise. Most importantly, I laughed at the impotence of evil.

    "...a mildly educated man."

Really Carnac, what facts can you report about my education?

  • "what facts can you report about my education? "

That it is clear you missed a few classes, and/or were sleeping through ethics.

"As I suspected that you were a parrot"

This has a lot of different meanings, stop attempting wit, at which you fail, and get to the point.

You are exactly like the hordes of high school kids that bitch and moan about getting things done, and use broad sweeping generalizations to make a point that has no merit.

Congratulations, you still look like a fool

  • And just as well, you call me a troll in a worldwide forum for people to judge your words.

And just to boot, it is insulting to me, because your words indicate you are including my father, mother, and my wife in your statements.

And who the hell are you to judge their contribution to the education of America.

While you may make a remotely valid point, you fail at communicating.

  • F,

"...you missed a few classes, and/or were sleeping through ethics."

Actually, I received an A in that class and attended regularly to demonstrate my big brain to a pretty lady. Currently, I read books and articles about ethics for fun. Further, I go out of my way to attend a good lecture on ethics; as recently as December, I attended a speech on ethics at the National Press Club.

Turn in your turban as you suck at your divinations.

    cont...

  • "This has a lot of different meanings"

You were repeating common bromides without references to concretes, so I anticipated that you were thoughtlessly repeating others. As this behavior is also typical with teachers, it is not necessarily definite.

"...bitch and moan...and use broad sweeping generalizations to make a point that has no merit."

Sounds like the pot calling the flamingo black. Meanwhile, you ignore my point that a university education program supports my solution.

    cont...

  • "...your words indicate you are including my father, mother, and my wife ...

As my vid included an exclusion related to exceptional teachers, it saddens me that you do not think that they qualify under that condition.

"...who the hell are you to judge their contribution to the education of America."

I am the customer who is sick and tired of overpaying for a defective and unreliable product.

    cont...

  • "...you fail at communicating."

Your response indicates that I communicated very effectively and hit a nerve.

  • I would bank my life savings on the fact that if I sat down with your professors and showed them this pile of garbage they would agree that you have effectively failed to convey a point, respectfully. You got a rise out of me, not because I disagree with your point, but moreso because the way in which you did it.

You have one tiny helper point to the massive problem of obsolete education. If you think something like this is contributing to the solution, you are sadly mistaken.

  • How convenient, you give yourself an out. Instead of standing behind your title to this piece of shit video, who would rather hit and run.

I can see why you might be upset at the education system. It has obviously failed you. Too bad.

Good day, and I hope your kids don't turn out like you. That would be a travesty to our society.

I submit that it is because the teachers are too stupid to know how to use them." Get the point!

    cont...

  • "...because the way in which you did it."

Do you prefer to be called PoMo or Postie? A Duke doctoral student told me a story recently about the postmodernist professors and their obsession with how things are communicated instead of the substance of the ideas. Why I am not surprised by you?

"You have one tiny helper point..."

PoMo, if you could think conceptually this concrete example is tied to the broader concept of using technology...

    cont...

  • ...to individualize instructions to match the gaps and strengths of the student. Isnt increasing individualization the whole idea behind smaller class sizes? I provided a no incremental cost alternative within a teachers scope of authority towards the same goal.

"How convenient, you give yourself an out."

What are you talking about PoMo?

    "It has obviously failed you."

Failed to condition me into a thoughtless drone? Guilty!

  • Before you run away, you might want to check out my more recent video in which I compare public school teachers to concentration camp guards. Please share these vids with all the stupid public school teachers who you know. I look forward to pillorying them in comments.

  • it's also the teachers. the parents are the ying to the parents yang. the kids always get stuck in the middle.

  • this is so true.

  • Haha, you are just too funny.

  • You are correct, the kids do be crazy bout them.

  • As a future teacher, I'm completely with you on this. We've got to integrate the amazing access that we have to information into our public education system. It is a tool that must be utilized not only to increase the effectiveness of the existing structure of public school education, but give students the ability to take part in educating themselves and engaging their minds on their own terms. Its a win win for everyone. Great video, hope to hear more.

  • Now, if I were to confiscate an MP3 player and the student can prove the he/she was using it for productive reasons, i would apologize and give it back. I doubt that any kid would have anything of academic value on their ipods.

Note: Eminem IS NOT of academic importance.

Great video Jim. I'm giving you five stars. You have a great attitude.

  • My mother was the dean of discipline at a school, and every confiscation had to be logged and stowed away. The girls would get their confiscated item at the end of the month or semester (depending on the item).

On my ipod I have Science podcasts and audiobooks. I can understand even college students using an audio player in such a way.

BUT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS? Hell, no. Maybe one in a million. Jim, were you ever a kid? You must remember!

  • Oh yes, and because high school kids are so OBVIOUSLY irresponsible and stupid, we should just not even try.

I wonder why they are like that? Perhaps it's because their teachers refuse to treat them like they aren't the mentally challenged?
