  • I later found out that that was Jeff King's studio. This must have been in 1985 or 86.

  • I met Arthur in a studio on Willoughby Street downtown Brooklyn. He was playing with Rafik Williamson and they were playing Giant Steps.Arthur had his shirt off and he was killin".I was scared to death ,to say the least. It shook me to the core.I had my guitar and was scared to take it out.I think I played I'll Remember April with Rafik.Incredible.I used to play with his drummer,Colin. Daryle Pooser

  • Fantastic. I met him once in Brooklyn at a friends jam session. What a great artist indeed.

  • Great observation, yes Arthur was heavily influenced by Hendrix, we, That is Arthur, Adrian Grannum and I played some Hendrix songs in the early days.

  • @Creativepeoplevideos

Any Vids of him playing Piano or Sax?

  • I actually hear quite a bit of Hendrix in this. Voodoo Child.

  • Arthur was an amazing tenor sax player and pianist. I'm a drummer who played w Arthur for two and a half years every day and Steve Coleman sat in with us as did Kenny Garrett. And yes, though Arthur never heard Shawn Lane, he was about the closest thing to Arthur Iv'e heard.

  • Now you know where Vernon Reid got it from! Great observation.

  • sounds like vernon reid...great

  • goodness gracious, I've never even heard of this guy, and the drummer and bass player,... I mean, they are just tearing this up and this is from 1978. I mean I'm embarrassed that this is the first time I've ever heard Arthur Rhames. very clean, technically detailed but as raging as possible. This is the way I've always hoped to hear from David Gilmore and Steve Coleman, but they were excelling ofcourse at their own mind bending stuff.

really glad I didn't accidentally go another decade!

  • i posted some audio from prospect park check it out

  • i thought I saw another video...maybe I was wrong(?)

    thanks

  • a while back there was video of arthur on guitar..what happened to it?

  • Is this video other than Part 1 & 2?

  • WHOA! Now THIS is what I'm talkin' about. Arthur was an amazing musician, the great lost guitar hero who slipped thru the cracks but rumors and whispers of his playing kept on getting mentioned by guys like Vernon Reid and others and then came the news that he had passed away. Some parallels with Shawn Lane: immense talent, unbelievable chops, passing away before really being allowed to make an impact. But the vitality here is just crazy - feel the energy!

  • whoa----thanks sooooooooo much for sharing these, Arthur is really a kind of missing link, especially considering these vids are 30 years old !

great stuff, i just hope there's more out there?

  • anyone have the "PBS Soundstage" footage taken at jazz forum? was front row for that one, baby!

  • Please repost the last comment...It was deleted by mistake...sorry about that.

    Cleve

  • videolover61 The deleted comment on Eternity, Featuring Arthur Rhames (Part.1) Reposted

I love it! Arthur was something else. The real deal. So why was he pushed to the side, and "shelved" by the musicians who "loved" him? Jealousy? Homophobia? For sure both. Since Arthur was a gay man, I think it had something to do with it. But he was such a powerful force, it makes you wish people were more "evolved." Well they aren't.

  • Peace Cleve, I didn't know U well , but I knew Art & Collin. I lived around the corner frm Collin. I believe U knew Mark Brathwait he played bass 2, I worked with him 4r a while b4 he left us. I had seen U guys play a few times & had recorded a concert@ parking lot of Bklyn Museum, remember that 1? I listen to that tape every so often and remember the raw soul U guys poured out. These clips U posted R nice, but do not even begin to express the abundace of energy & exploration the band produced

  • Finally! I played with Arthur for a week up in London, Ont. Canada- One of the greatest weeks of my life.

I was invited to do "Rene's Theme" with him on guitar (Larry Coryell, Spaces) We went nuts and tore the place down...hehe.

  • Gary McGill is one of the finest musicians and one of the coolest people I've ever met. Arthur, Collin and I met Gary while playing in Canada. We hung with Gary for the entire week we were there, he also sat in with us. We connected with Gary like we knew him for a long time. This was a result of the fact that Gary was just a very genuine person. For anyone having the opportunity to study with Gary, consider yourself blessed, Gary McGill truly has the gift, musicality and personality!

  • thank you sir! you humble me greatly! (there's a tear in my eye here.)

Did you know that I've been searching on the net for stuff on Arthur for years, and finally I've found something. This is so great!

  • Hey-The Tube tore my other account down-I just have a little humble instructional account now.

If you guys set up a "Fans of Arthur Rhames" deal on Facebook, I will join it!

I am not qualified to do such a thing.

  • uhmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

    ABSOLUTELY!!!!!

    saxmachine aka funkydonkey

  • The Divine Masters!!!! Nuff Said....!

  • you dont know the half of it.And if you listen to what Arthur is saying with his instruments you can hear that he did indeed have his own voice and made his own poignant musical statements.Arthur was an extention of what trane, mclaughlin and tyner did.Arthur was also a theoritician with many innovative concepts. We can only imagine where Arthur would have taken his art.

  • You're quite right, For those who just experienced Arthur casually they can't be expected to understand the magnitude of Arthur's ability. I lived through a major portion of Arthur's growth with Eternity and beyond. I'd say Arthur was one of the most brilliant musicians of our time! My question is, What does this say about the music industry? That Arthur lived and died without the attention of the industry at large? That's the real question.

  • Arthur complained of shoddy treatment as I recall, from something called "11th House Management"? He mumbled that they were more attentive to some other acts and that Arthur wasn't "ready yet", or some such. I shook my head at that one. When I see him again in the new system,(hopefully) we'll pick up where we left off...

  • Somers Junior High School, The East, Lincoln Terrace Park!! Those are also a part of my youth and places and spaces i've been Brother Cleve!!.... Great Arthur Rhames Site!! Great stories and history! MASTERS OF SOUND!, ETERNITY....

  • I remember seeing arthur a few times around new york back then.He was certaintly a great player.A triple threat on piano, tenor sax as well as guitar.I just wish he could have stuck around longer to find his own voice on each instrument. He was way in to the john mclaughlin thing on guitar,He then sounded just like mccoy tyner on piano and john coltrane on tenor sax.All of it killin' but he needed to find HIMSELF.

I heard he left music to become a corrections officer(?)

    Thanks for the post.

  • I had heard about Arthur from my friend, drummer Jeff "Siege" Siegel and hard listened to some old tapes. But seeing Arthur is an entirely different and profound experience. What a loss his tragic death was.

  • ETERNITY!...... ETERNITY..... The world will now see the TRUTH OF THE TRUE MASTERS OF SOUND AND TOTAL DIVINE INSPIRATION...! Peace and Blessings to a true Eternal SOUL BROTHER Arthur Rhames... A special THANK U to Cleve Allyne for posting this rare historical Footage of the Guitar, Piano, Saxaphone MASTER.......
