@myaccountagain yes, if it is a finished canvas stretch it much tighter, because you won't be priming it later, the way you stretch it this first time is how it will be.
Good video! I agree that having bigger space is a plus! I moved into a house and they forgot to show me the attic. When we finally moved in i saw the door to go up and i was shocked to see that it was perfect for an art studio! now i can build and paint like crazy! (lived in a small apartment before so building a frame like this one would have been a challenge.) Keep your videos coming.
Hi ! I want to make a canvas to paint on... oil painting. What would I look for when buying a roll of canvas online? Which is the right one to buy!? Which ones are suitable for painting on?
Wow. This is such a cool video. I really enjoyed watch it. Great job and hope to see more cool video work like this. Hey you should check out art4love.com i think you would really enjoy it and the canvas art and wall art.
Hi, This is a great video. I liked this a lot. This is what you tube was made for. Question: Is double primed canvas something you buy or is it something you can make by just applying two coats of primer?
Hi Jane, I am happy that you show step by step how to assemble a frame, and you have all the right tools, my name is Mirko Huanuco-Peru I'm from and I congratulate you, I would like to learn how to make frames have an easel and if you give me linda chao a hand and thanks.
Hey Jane! I'm building and stretching a canvas for the first time and your videos have been a HUGE help for me! Thanks!
But I have a question about the canvas you use. I'm at the stage of this video where I need to stretch the canvas, but I'm unsure of what canvas to buy. What exact brand do you buy from Dick Blick usually? When you order a roll, I know they charge some items by the yard. If you buy multiple yards, do they put all the yards you purchased on the same roll or a bunch of rolls?
@Paperjace it is nice to get a double weave for good quality. I get unprimed. You would order a certain number of yards and it should come as one long solid piece of canvas.
where can i get the canvas rolls at? i have been looking for them for awhile. i always see them online but not at stores. and they have a lot of different canvases that i dont know what to get. lol i get confused. i have always bought canvases but never made them before
@maggie22marti I recommend Dick Blick online, you can select the hight (they have several options) and the length when you order from them. I buy unprimed and prime it myself with gesso. Hope that helps!

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I am just coming off aq horrible little painting sessiom in my darkened Caravaggio like studio. I don't know what happened, I will have to cut and destroy this canvas. I'm not against what you are doing, however, I blame the failure on my time and paint. Theres not even any lead white anymore.
I'm a traditional painter. That looks good, however, when you apply Rabbit Skin Glue, those strecher supports will fail to hold glue. How are you going to frame, that looks like a 2 inch width around the edge?
Your videos have been really helpful, but I can't seem to manage the corners. At what angle are you trying to make the first fold? I know the second fold (the one that you staple first)is at a 45, so it folds up vertically, but what is that first section doing?
I saw the pliers in one of your videos. And after watching the canvas stretching videos all the way through, I see that if you stretch the canvas too much at the beginning, then it will be way to tight after the gesso at the end
I like a smooth surface to paint on. It also saves paint if you fill the "tooth" of the canvas in with gesso instead of your $20 a tube paints. The more gesso the smoother the canvas surface is. The end result differs with how many coats of gesso you use. To many coats and the canvas can get to heavy and sag generally in the center. There are people who prepare their canvas with many coats and even sand in between coats.
you are such a sweet and pretty girl and the professional way you show us step by step is so awsome thank you i have done this my self i have a compound miter saw and a scroll saw and router but i only used the router for shaping edes of wood this makes me want to go to the shop again when its summer its too cold so i paint on mat board love gina
Thats a great looking canvas! I'd love to try that sometime! So from start to finish how long would you say it took to do once you have all the materials and tools?
It is fun and rewarding to make them. I can make a large canvas for about $14-20. I think it takes me from start to the finished 3 coats of gesso... half a day. That is why I like to do more than one while I have the tools out. I don't like to be in a hurry around power tools.
Awesome! So glad to hear it!

I just hang it on screws or nails, the 1x4 board is only to reenforce my thin wall. You could just hang your work on screws on the wall...
