  • Awesome! So glad to hear it!

  • Thank you SOOO much for taking the time to make the videos! You helped me so much!!!

    Cheers!

  • I like to by from Dick Blick

  • Where do you buy your canvas? I can only find 62 inch, I want a little larger...Thanks!

  • You're so cool!

  • Thanks!!! You're such a sweetheart for explaining this at lenght! Let's get crackin

  • Are there any other things to know if your using a canvas that already has a print on it?

  • @myaccountagain yes, if it is a finished canvas stretch it much tighter, because you won't be priming it later, the way you stretch it this first time is how it will be.

  • 3:15 thats what she said :D

  • hi jane! what brand of canvas do you use? and do you get it unprimed or primed?

  • Good video! I agree that having bigger space is a plus! I moved into a house and they forgot to show me the attic. When we finally moved in i saw the door to go up and i was shocked to see that it was perfect for an art studio! now i can build and paint like crazy! (lived in a small apartment before so building a frame like this one would have been a challenge.) Keep your videos coming.

  • omg and she likes 50's surf music ....... it is love now lol

  • On average, how long does it take you to make a canvas like this one?

  • @ricosuave66 about a day if you count prep.

  • beautiful corners

  • Your corners look great! I'm learning so much from this series :) Can't wait to get started making some canvases for myself!

  • Hi ! I want to make a canvas to paint on... oil painting. What would I look for when buying a roll of canvas online? Which is the right one to buy!? Which ones are suitable for painting on?

  • Super CUTE studio too!! :)

  • Thank you! This was very helpful! I'm making a 2'x3' today :)

  • @MissMerAngel that is great to know! :-)

  • gracia por compartir tus conocimientos.

  • Brava! well done querida

  • Hi, This is a great video. I liked this a lot. This is what you tube was made for. Question: Is double primed canvas something you buy or is it something you can make by just applying two coats of primer?

    Again...Great work and good luck!

  • linen or cotton?

  • @Ryboy1381

    :)

  • does the canvas need to be primed?

  • Hi Jane, I am happy that you show step by step how to assemble a frame, and you have all the right tools, my name is Mirko Huanuco-Peru I'm from and I congratulate you, I would like to learn how to make frames have an easel and if you give me linda chao a hand and thanks.

  • Great video. I'm trying to stretch my first canvas now. If the canvas is primed does it need to be stretched tighter?

  • @shaunryanart sure does! Good luck to ya!

  • You are AWESOME! :] Thank you.

  • @nemnemnemnemi holla! ;-)

  • i like how you put your wear your belt

  • you was great help thanks

  • thats a really nice way to fold the corners :D im so gonna try that next time i stretch^^

  • Hey Jane! I'm building and stretching a canvas for the first time and your videos have been a HUGE help for me! Thanks!

But I have a question about the canvas you use. I'm at the stage of this video where I need to stretch the canvas, but I'm unsure of what canvas to buy. What exact brand do you buy from Dick Blick usually? When you order a roll, I know they charge some items by the yard. If you buy multiple yards, do they put all the yards you purchased on the same roll or a bunch of rolls?

  • @Paperjace it is nice to get a double weave for good quality. I get unprimed. You would order a certain number of yards and it should come as one long solid piece of canvas.

  • where can i get the canvas rolls at? i have been looking for them for awhile. i always see them online but not at stores. and they have a lot of different canvases that i dont know what to get. lol i get confused. i have always bought canvases but never made them before

  • @maggie22marti I recommend Dick Blick online, you can select the hight (they have several options) and the length when you order from them. I buy unprimed and prime it myself with gesso. Hope that helps!

  • LOTS OF WORK! AND WELL DONE! now how much does the canvas cost?

  • This was verrry helpful Im actually on my way to go get the materials now

  • Comment removed

  • Gesso tightens ..thats easier than stretching THX!

  • its so funny how many power tools you've used in these videos

  • omg, i fancy the fuck out of

    you

  • Very nice production. Peaceful.

  • i love you! thank you very much!

  • very nice work

  • Awesome video series, Jane! I need to build some for my mom. I will use your videos. Thank you so much!!

By the way, awesome music and video editing too :-)

    -Ben-

  • always wear protective ear wear when vacuming also..

  • Where do you get the big rolls of canvas?

  • Thanks - exactly sessions - I've watched all and now ahve made my first canvas!

  • thank you, very informative

  • Thanks for the videos!

  • WOw fantastic! Thanks so much! Just a question.. How do you make a wall holder for your canvase....2x4's? What holdsit in place when you paint?

  • I just hang it on screws or nails, the 1x4 board is only to reenforce my thin wall. You could just hang your work on screws on the wall...

    :-)

  • You did a awesome job on making that. My daughter wants to make one too.

  • Thanks so much, I am glad that both generations can enjoy! Painting rules!

    :-)

    J

  • Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I am just coming off aq horrible little painting sessiom in my darkened Caravaggio like studio. I don't know what happened, I will have to cut and destroy this canvas. I'm not against what you are doing, however, I blame the failure on my time and paint. Theres not even any lead white anymore.

  • Hope things are going better for you these days, J

  • I'm a traditional painter. That looks good, however, when you apply Rabbit Skin Glue, those strecher supports will fail to hold glue. How are you going to frame, that looks like a 2 inch width around the edge?

  • I don't see many contemporary artist using frames these days. Hasn't this become the norm to use wider stretcher supports?

  • Jane,

an beautiful woman who knows power tools and fine art...be still my beating heart.

Thanks for the Vid, wery informative and not bad to look at either.

  • How many yards was that roll you had?

  • It was 30 yards when I bought it.

  • i want to start canvas painting. I don't do art, but, when i set my mind to it, i can draw really well. I want to move onto canvas paintings now =]

    looks like mad fun!

  • Your videos have been really helpful, but I can't seem to manage the corners. At what angle are you trying to make the first fold? I know the second fold (the one that you staple first)is at a 45, so it folds up vertically, but what is that first section doing?

  • Hey did you figure this out? I have been traveling for a couple of months, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

    Jane

  • quite informative video - thanks

  • where do you get the big roll??

  • Dick Blick Art Supply catalog, try to get free shipping on it if you can. They have a website too.

  • Thanks for this,

    Very informative.

  • I like the wider edge canvas too, and they don't really sell them pre-made.

  • Ya, I love custom sizes. Thanks so much for joining TheJane!

  • How come you don't use canvas stretcher pliers?

  • sometimes I do

  • I saw the pliers in one of your videos. And after watching the canvas stretching videos all the way through, I see that if you stretch the canvas too much at the beginning, then it will be way to tight after the gesso at the end

  • THanks very explanitory

  • You are doing an amazing job. And, damn you are hot!!!!!!!

  • Hi, you know when you have rounded the edges with the router, which side is that for the front or the back?

  • Young beautiful and talented - what else can you ask for?

  • why so many layers of gesso

  • Great question..

I like a smooth surface to paint on. It also saves paint if you fill the "tooth" of the canvas in with gesso instead of your $20 a tube paints. The more gesso the smoother the canvas surface is. The end result differs with how many coats of gesso you use. To many coats and the canvas can get to heavy and sag generally in the center. There are people who prepare their canvas with many coats and even sand in between coats.

  • I love ur songs u add 2 ur vids

  • Hi Jane

Excellent descriptions as you proceed through your video's,

Corners are still a bit daunting I find, perhaps a closer look at how you tuck in?

I'm nit picking, Im sure it will get better the more times I do it..............

    Willybizz....

  • Yes, will do next time!

  • please will you marry me ive fallen in looooooooooove.

  • So funny!

  • Hi Jane, Nice work.

  • Thanks!

  • Jane!!!! Thanks for all this vital information!!!!

This is a piece of gold for the beginners.

  • You got it!

  • you are such a sweet and pretty girl and the professional way you show us step by step is so awsome thank you i have done this my self i have a compound miter saw and a scroll saw and router but i only used the router for shaping edes of wood this makes me want to go to the shop again when its summer its too cold so i paint on mat board love gina

  • yay ... i just made my own canvas! ... my first ... thanks so much for the FABULOUS tutorials!

    lisa

  • Alright! That is so great to hear! Thanks for the feedback, so glad the tutorials were helpful.

    Congrads on your first canvas!

    TheJane

  • Thank you for your videos! I have been wanting to stretch my own canvas but did not know how to do it - Thx, Thx, Thx!

  • That is so great, glad to help. The next and last clip is on gessoing the canvas. Thanks!

    TheJane

  • thanks for teaching us, its really interesting to watch how its made. makes me appreciate something as simple as a canvas a lot more.

  • Just one more to go!

As a side note, I'm jealous of how much studio space you've got there.

  • Hey thanks, I just bought a new roll of canvas, I used that other roll up. This time I bought 30 yards! It should take a while to use that up!

    TheJane

  • Thats a great looking canvas! I'd love to try that sometime! So from start to finish how long would you say it took to do once you have all the materials and tools?

  • It is fun and rewarding to make them. I can make a large canvas for about $14-20. I think it takes me from start to the finished 3 coats of gesso... half a day. That is why I like to do more than one while I have the tools out. I don't like to be in a hurry around power tools.

    TheJane

  • Jane, thanks for a very comprehensive, helpful, "how to" video! You RULE! 100 Stars!

  • Thanks love your comments!

    TheJane

  • Excellent!!!

  • will you make me a tattoo?

  • Intriguing, like a commission project?

  • mayhaps...I want something really weird and original. I'll even video tape myself getting it.

  • coolness
