  • while the laugh may seem inapproproate i think it was obviously because of the absolute silence in the room, and then you hear the squeak of his chair. If this was a "normal rock" show you wouldnt have even heard it. That said, this is a stunning performance. I love the ending from about 3:05 until the end which is gorgeous the melody he sings

  • Was that a suppressed laugh at 3.05? If it was, fuck that person.

  • I wish this ending was on the original track

  • The breathing and whispering make this video feel rather voyeuristic.

    It's.... interesting

  • I would kill to have his voice.

  • I agree, but I think the "Oh god..." is cute, more than anything. I myself would feel the same way and start bawling my eyes out seeing Sufjan sing one of my favorite songs by him in person... he's almost like a God or something in some way.

  • @ShareYourUnderwear Exactly. Exactly.

  • I could do without the cameraman drooling :)

  • I can't listen to this song very often.

  • I totally had shivers from this.

  • 3:31 - oh.. my.. god......

  • "ohhhh mmmmyyy goddddd"

  • his voice is so eerie

  • whoever keeps saying "oh my god" needs to take a deep breath and calm down. he's good but really?

  • Instead of screaming i hear crying..wow this guy is something.

And this song always brings me tears

  • He's so beautiful. =D

  • This just brought tears to my eyes. It is not everyday that a song can reach you in such an unexpected way. This is true art.

  • It depresses me that our society accepts half ass talent with open arms and impeccable musicans like this man are looked over. He deserves to be bigger. Much bigger.

  • an angel : )

  • this is a reason why I love music.

  • Sufjan looiks so much like someone I might know. He doesn't look like a star or super artsy, just like someone I might know. Very Cool!

  • you know what I love about Sufjan?

    everything.

and I love the fact that he has a respectful audience, it's so hard to go anywhere without some jerk screaming and/or singing over a voice. fellow sufjan fans, I love you.

  • your voice is amazing

  • Nice

  • Ouaouh !! dark and touching beauty: amazing version !!!

  • This is an incredible live rendition! thank you for uploading this

  • He said he wanted to humanize a serial killer. The human race kind of shrugs away from people who commits crime and blames it on the fact that they aren't sane. But there is this notion Sufjan puts out there that anyone can turn and commit such a crime. It can happen to anyone.

  • This song is so amazing.

  • what's with the camerman breathing oh god into the mike? climax anyone ;)

  • "ohh godd" towards the end..haha

  • i love harmonizing to this song<3

    this is chilling

  • i love this guys talent and voice, but, the "oh god" comment at the end just made me laugh. i think its an amazing version dont get me wrong. i just felt that the commentary was a lil overdramatic

  • @torgitron82 haha yea i agree..

  • why the "oh god" at the end of the video?

  • Aaron Dessner! What are you doing in this video!?

  • @PulpAffliction it was a festival that the Dessners actually put together every year

  • @PulpAffliction The National feat. Sufjan.

  • sufjan stevens and thom yorke made me like music again.

  • @YacubH2961 Right there with you buddy.

  • @JohnTheFaun

    yep

    good thinkin bud

  • Stunning...

  • I almost think that this shouldn't have been recorded on video.

  • This song puts a lump in my throat every time, it's just so damn perfect.

  • just amazing.

  • he is just so very lovely. :)

  • I love the gasps at the beginning

  • Anyone knows Chris Garneau's 'Music For Tourists' ? Give it a try if you have time, it's definitely worth it.

  • yes chris garneau is pretty amazing too. it's funny because sufjan and chris look like they could be related lol

  • Yeah, Sufjan Stevens is one of the bestest singers around.

  • oh my god are you one of them <3

  • why the "oh god" at the end nixie?

  • Comment removed

  • And at the beginning and in the middle (just softer)

  • because its just that amazing

  • What would make this song a little more amazing for me would be a slightly heavier sort of Anthony Phillips texture in the guitar work. Wow.

  • the two people with the best voices on the planet. HANDS DOWN.

    1. Thom Yorke

    2. Sufjan Stevens

    Pure Talent, Pure Voice

In my opinion, the untouchables of music.

  • Spot on! Definitely in agreeance here.

  • I love this song so much and Sufjan Stevens is amazing. I can't ever get tired of his music.

  • 1:16 gave me a huge chill down my spine

  • me too. Actually they were going off life fireworks starting around 42 seconds in.

  • Agreed, Immensely.

  • somber

  • omg, when is on tour again??

  • Holy crap, I was at this show in Cincinnati, on Holy Saturday, the night before Easter. He performed this song on the foot-pump organ that you see in the video, noting that it was an instrument used by itinerant preachers. This was a fantastic show.

  • when i first heard this song, I was legitly terrified, but then I looked up John Wayne Gacy and was sooo relieved that Sufjan didn't just think up a killer clown haha

    I LOVE SUFJAN!!

  • i knew gacy's story before I heard this song. and when i did, i found it even more disturbing. in a beautifully bizarre way though...

  • ah amazing. love all of his music.

  • The guy filming at the end just straight up says, "Oh, God!" This is powerful stuff.

  • This is so gorgeous. The setting is perfect for the feeling of the song.

  • harmoniums are the best.

  • i love the "gasp" at the begining when whoever is filming realizes its this song.. great performance, though i prefer the acoustic guitar version...

  • too 50nine50 i think its because. he does have a really good voice. and he can play heaps of instruments. but i think that many people are attracted to the words of his songs. because when you listen to them they are really deep.like noone sings in the way and about what he does. and it captures people and makes them feel different to what other songs do.

    thats my opinion anyway.

  • Amazing performance, aside from the extremely creepy noises and "oh my god"s from the guy holding the camera

  • i love sufjans tone the soothing quality pure genious

  • can someone please message me and tell me why you think this guy is so great?

i'm not trying to offend anyone, i just don't think he's as amazing as people claim he is. sure, he's better than poppy crap that's out today, but still.

  • Sufjan is amazing because he plays about 50 instruments flawlessy, can compose like an epic composer and has some of the best lyrics in this generation of music. His voice is quite etheral and calming as well.

His music is a breath of fresh air to people, he has hype for a reason, and a good one at that. I prefer reviewers gushing over someone like Sufjan that HAS talent rather than say shit that's been done a 100 times before. I find him unique ;)

  • Sufjan's music brings me to this intensely personal place in which I am wholly myself.

  • This man is a genius.

Ah, I love him. Every single aspect about him.

  • this is hauntingly stunningly gorgeous. Sufjan oozes beauty from every pore.

  • true artistic of these days

  • the dude with the camcorder, is either really sad due to the song, or just really bored.

I mean the "oh god" part sounded kind of sarcastic, and like, "damn i hope this concert is over soon"

  • This is such a beautiful song...almost simon and garfunkel level....but would never be popular because pop music is garbage today

  • it woudn't be popular because its about child rape and murder

  • perhaps...but its too slow for modern radio anyway

  • but it really deserves recognition, people need to be more accepting of the meaning he's trying to convey

  • the first time i heard this song i got shivers

  • i still get shivers

  • A lot like anathallo...Keep it up!

  • that is pretty ridiculously amazing. lucky people.

  • i was at this :]

i love that little organ he had

    and his stories

  • oooh i love this video so much. sufjan sounds (& looks) positively ethereal

  • i love how he can play like all his songs on every instrument its pretty awsome

  • lmao.

  • damn, he is so beautiful!

  • one of the best video's of this song on youtube!!

  • whats with your ohhhhhh god comment toward the end? you all right?

  • that would be my male friend marveling at sufjan's beauty.

  • I think that's sweet....but also funny that it was captured on film! Thank God for the heart-throbbing moments in life!

  • @nixie570

    hahaha this is funny!!!!(sory)
