He has a wonderful facility, no doubt. But I am just not feeling his emotion. There is no sense of urgency here, and this aria is ALL about the underlying urgency.
Jonas Kaufmann : Perfect ! So much soul ! so much expression ! Awesome... I really love the way his lovely eyebrows move to express the emotion. And he has so many expressions on his beautiful face... Germany really has some very good and sensible singers... Bravo bravo bravo. Check out the WERTHER with him in the opera Bastille. Awesome too.

He is german: perfekt, but without soul nor expression. Have you noticed as he has the same face expression during everything he sings? His eyebrows never move. No expression nor mimic.

@anothertry75: The art is in having the emotions inside you and being so transparent for people to sense it, without having to make faces or waving arouns with your arms. Listen again at 1:38-2:14 for example and tell me it is cold and unmoved singing
Absolutely marvelous, I have tears in my eyes and listen again and have not enough. I saw Jonas in this role in Munich July 2nd ,unfortunately he sang this aria in piano up to 2:50. Was it experiment ?Or was it Fabio Luise's idea?It sounded that he was tired, but with Tosca he continued with enthusiasm, that we lacked in this beautiful aria. We were so confused with this interpretation, we even didn't start to applaud. There is no need to look for new ways,do it as it is here and it's celestial!
@mariastuarda51 He's singing in a television studio, so I think a 'reinterpretation' is justified... in much the same way an actor would 'scale' a performance depending on whether it was being delivered in a large theatre or being captured on film.
Una hermosa voz de tenor dramatico, con gran extension a lirico ligero, pero su centro esta en la tessitura para dramatico, de gran potencia, presencia hermosa,
@Corvastus He occasionally uses his wide dynamic range a bit like Corelli -- and I saw Corelli regularly from 1965 to '74. Others he sometimes reminds me of are John Alexander (check out "sogno" here on "sogno mio"), whom I also saw, and Ramon Vinay, who had already retired by the time I started attending. Of course, Vinay's voice is huge, and even without having ever seen Vinay, I can hear that Kaufmann's voice is hardly the same size. But his way with a phrase does sometimes recall Vinay.
@BernardProfitendieu: your clear ignorance of the English language does not qualify you to correct johneunsen: to be "au fait" with something is an absolutely normal expression in English and has little to do with French. Tu piges?
He is pretty good. Though how you can say his technique is flawless is beyond me, the top notes are constricted and don't have a "spin" or ring to them ala the greats. But this is what we deal with today.
In terms of musicianship, technique, and skill, Jonas Kauffman is a singer who is second to none. He is not a singer to love, though one can easily do that he has a beautiful voice, but a singer to respect. He is able, and does sing a great variety of music and roles with great success and to very good effect. That is really something that can not be said of most of the tenors working today(and of singers in other vocal ranges also).
Jonas Kauffman is one of my favorite tenors. I agree that the production values of this performance are negligible, however his singing is not underwhelming. His voice is beautiful but his style of singing is controlled and restrained. Most other singer appear overly dramatic and hysterical by comparison. He has a flawless technique and is a very capable singer.
thank you for this comment. i'm watching and listening again. do you know anything about alagna? some youtube people have written him off and say he is finished. i havn't heard himm lately. if you live in uk he is on desert island discs this sunday.
I don't think that Alagna is finished, at least I hope not. He has had difficulties in the past but I have heard that he is learning from past mistakes and is choosing carefully the music that suits him and which he can sing successfully.
I heard him at the Met in Cav/Pag this past spring and was very impressed with his dramatic sense as well as his voice. He has had ups and downs... but I too hold out hope for the future! GEMahler passes on encouraging news.

No...He has a magnificent voice but no connection to the emotion of the moment. To call him the best tenor of the world shows abysmal ignorance.
