My brother, and my friend koranfudge found this bug in a lawn. We kept him for awhile. Sadly, rick ross passed awayed December 2, 2007, we had it for 8 months.

Little late, but you forgot to mention some additional information... Rick Ross appears to have given birth to several more Toe Biters shortly before she (he?) passed away... None of the babies survived. Information on these water beetles is hard to come by, so I'm not exactly sure if they die shorty after giving birth or it was another factor that caused death... R.I.P. Rick Ross... you were the greatest pet Giant Water Beetle ever...

- I was one of her (his?) multiple caretakers.

Sorry to say, but they were "rescued" with this purpose in mind. Later, we began to feed Rick (the beetle) thawed (after being frozen) already dead fish from a local store. Fish ranged from goldfish to dragonfish to mollies to comets (large goldfish).

Why have you got a fish killing bug in a fish tank?

Information on these particular bugs is rare. We basically improvised his housing based on the fact that they are ambush hunters that seem to do best attacking fish that come by them rather than chasing them. So, a plastic plant and some food (the goldfish) were put in a 10 gallon fish tank for him to survive.

Yeah, it has a very, very, very painful bite. It injects venom to liquify its prey so it can drink them up. Due to its sheer size it injects a lot, so it's probably a lot more painful than a smaller wasp or bee sting.
