  • There is a section of the piece missing - see video edit at 2:03 - probably because of a youtube time limit for which I believe there is a workaround. I hope to see Ji Hye's complete (fantastic) performance here sometime soon. (Andy Harnsberger has uploaded his recent video of the complete work.)

  • this looks like it was sped up slightly...its still really good though

  • @kyotaiko It wasn't sped up, I was there ;) She is that fast.

@timetoslowdownisnow John Serry is a pianist, not a percussionist/marimbist... so even though I don't want to discredit him as a composer, I'm not sure he necessarily realized how hard his music is. There isn't a terrible amount of idiosyncratic material here, other than the octave stuff...

  • @DougDrumUltimAPerry Au Contraire! John Serry was actually a percussion MAJOR at Eastman. In fact, on his senior recital he performed the marimba in the Ingolf Dahl Duo Concertante (for which I played the flute part), and I can tell you that his performance was expert. So by being both a composer AND a marimba player himself, he wrote Night Rhapsody for his good friend Leigh Howard Stevens with full knowledge of the instrument's capabilities. BRAVO to Ms. Jung on a wonderful performance!

  • @Kujalamuse Ah, I stand corrected! Thanks for the info. Ji Hye is my teacher here in Kansas, and she had mentioned something to me about how he does a lot of jazz piano playing... do you know anything about that?

  • @DougDrumUltimAPerry Oh yes, John is an amazing jazz piano player and composer..... unfortunately he just wasn't that popular in the late 70's early 80's to sustain a career as a jazz combo leader. I had the pleasure of being a roadie for a short time. He lent me his scores for some of the pieces he wrote for the jazz combo and to this day nothing is quite like it.....

  • Sometimes pieces like this seem to be "difficult" for the sake of being so, and not necessarily for the sake of good music.

  • JI HYE IS A MARIMBA TIGER! She is beyond amazing!

  • This is insane! Atonal marimba piece!

  • @Remoxx I wouldn't call it atonal. More like chromatic instead of diatonic.

  • @DestroyedDimension Indeed, it's more like it.

  • Unreal.

  • Wonderful play and composition!!!

    Great John Serry!!!

    *****

  • That was really impressive... But where are measures 61-79?

  • wow, wonderfule performance of this piece. I love the piece and you sound great.

  • she's a machine! That is a beautiful marimba.Adams Artist classic.

  • I've never really cared for this piece and still don't, but nonetheless, Ji Hye really throws down here. This is an amazing performance.

  • @AoAPC i agree. it's really hard, but it's not my favorite piece to listen to. and yeah she killed it.
