I usually have a larger glass, and I pour the water slowly and in small drips over the sugarcube until it is dissolved by the water. Takes a little longer, but it´s worth the wait :-), but "to each his own" as they say
..also sugar cubes were invented in the Czech Republic, which was at that time a part of the Austro Hungarian Empire..its through this block of compacted sugar that absinth became far more pleasurable to drink, and by far more elegant than the alternative of having to dump a teaspoon of sugar straight into the glass. The sugar cube became very popular and was exported throughout Europe, though not only for absinth reasons people found it to be practical and less messy.
I only want to mention this for tourist reasons, for those travelling to Europe, you dont need to go only to Spain or France to purchase absinth. Im Czech so i know, besides being a beer nation we drink absinth when we visit friends or as a digestive after dinner, there is no better digestive trust me :) Anyway really enjoyed your video keep it up. From one Goth to another.
Absinth originated in Switzerland, that is where it was invented. Today it is legal in only a few European countries where it is manufactured , but one important country you forgot to mention is the Czech Republic where you will find orginal absinth everywhere, absinth liquor stores, absinth glass stores the city has absinth on every corner. You must understand that it came to the height of its fame during the Art Nouveau era, and many Czech artists were drinking it e.g Alfons Mucha.
I live in the UK and I'm 19 but I'm going to be 20 next month, so fortunately I'm legally allowed to drink alcohol because the minimum drinking age here is 18. I really like your talk on the history of absinthe and I'm curious to try it at some point, I would love to try Mansinthe if I can find it in the future.
responding to one of the comments, thujone is IN wormwood its not added seperatly. As to you cupcake as a fellow goth and a big fan of absinthe i did enjoy this video and so did my wife.Very glad you like to moulin rouge :) i live in england so it is alot easier to get hold of fine absinthes made to the oringinal reciepes. One thing i will say to you is take more time when pouring your water to ensure that the suger melts before you stir.Other than that enjoy your absinthe.
at first i sort of made the mistake of thinking you were a poseur, then i thought "well, she's having fun and she's being herself, she knows her stuff, and even if some of the things she does i don't consider them 'true' it doesn't matter, she's herself and that's what matters"
absinthe is interesting. thujon, the chemical in absinthe, mixed with the herb wormwood is a natural aphrodisiac to some women. Edgar Allan Poe was a huge fan. i love the lucid brand because it is very good quality and distilled properly. depending on which state/country you live in, it is sold in most wine stores, and such.
First of all, I'm an exotic dancer, and my dancer name is Absynthe. ;D Seriously, it's my favorite. <333 ANYWAY, I wanted to make the point that it wasn't actually the wormwood in it that made you hallucinate way back in the day even. They dabbed some laudenum over the sugar cube before they dripped the water.
@StaleCrayons Ooooooh yeaah did the use laudenum!! That stuff was seriously insane, and rather dangerous if in the wrong hands. Only doctors and addicts could recognize its odor. It would be interesting to try it though
First of all, love your hat. Second, I absolutely love absinthe, but the kinds being made in the United States currently just don't do the magnificent spirit justice.
If you ever get a chance, you should really try "Century Absinth" It's the best I've ever had and has a very floral and balanced flavor (one of the higher Thujone contents counters well the typically overwhelming flavor of anise). A little pricy but WELL worth it. I also recommend Maktub Absinthe.
@geezaweebrek I would say you might like it...but that is a big might. There is something called Pernot which is like Absinthe, but it is yellow. It has a lighter anise taste and will be less gross for anyone who doesn't like it as much :) Try that maybe
@JobeDavies The one I am talking about with the eye on the label is sooo good, it doesn't even have to be cut with water really. dwennifer has that one and she loves it!! :) The one I have in the video is okay, but a little thick.
@dwennifer Absinthe is generally sweet and sometimes a little on the thicker side. You don't have to use sugar...I have tried different Absinthe and drank it strait. However, the sugar and water are used to both cut and also sweeten it. Certain Absinthes can be harsh for some people, including me.
@dwennifer There are expensive Absinthes out there that should not be expensive....and, there are good Absinthes out there that are worth what you pay. MAKE SURE it is French, Swiss, or the American one I showed in the video. DO NOT buy it from Mexico because that is not real nor safe Absinthe. Bottles usually run from $45 and up. :)

I've been somewhat curious about absinthe but haven't delved very deeply nor looked into it's historical roots. That was very informative. ^_^

@CupcakeVamp I'm not very fond of the taste of anise, in fact, I hate it!
But do you think I could still like this drink? I mean, does it have a strong anise flavour? And btw, I've seen the drink in Dracula!
