if your hands go down....you will hit the top half of the ball 9 times out of 10. you need a more linear swing to have a longer period of time having a bigger zone to have your "point of contact". and i like mr8carters comment...hes exactly right

go look a some google images! The more you can stay short to the ball and get long through contact the better. Let the ball get deep/travel, the bat is traveling it's fastest point right off the belly button. The best hitters let the ball get deep!!!!!

I play youth, IT'S CALLED SWEETSPOT. You do not turn the foot. It's THE HIP AND ELBOW WHATS MORE IMPORTANT!!.... When you make contact, you follow through and pull back. That gives a 90% chance of hitting it. Now balls and strikes are a whole different story. If the ball goes low, you really want high more. but not really high. you want it on the opposite side of the plate your swinging from. but the best way to hit a ball is to get it right down the middle Teach it right. HOWCAST FTW!!!

let's see...swing down so that the timing must be perfect to meet the ball. A 90 mph fastball takes 4/10 of a second and you are going to impart backspin by hitting the bottom of the ball at just the right time? Look at professional hitters and realize that they are matching the plane of the ball with their swing. If you are a tad early or late you still have a chance to hit the ball. With a downward swing you must be perfect...

Amen, and to add to that, the reason you NEVER want to swing down is gravity is pulling any pitch down towards the ground. To make solid contact you really want a slightly upward swing, which is one of the things the great Ted Williams preached.

If your arms are already locked out and extended at the point of contact, you have no extension through the baseball to be able to sort of, push through the point of contact and get more potential distance on the ball you hit.

Also, while you don't want to hit the ball on that downward angle, you also don't want to drop your hands to get level to the ball as well because tendency is to start drop your back shoulder as well and getting a lot of pop ups. Just swing straight to the ball.

Check out any of them standing on deck how they are swinging. I taught my son this technique when he was younger and he is bombing the ball.

Also, how can you say somebody using a metal bat who has not even looked at the science of movement is a good coach? Do the major league hitters warm up with a metal bat? Do they swing with their arms in the game when they hit home runs?

Do you want to see my scientific journals concluding that if conscious thoughts are put into the arms moving it decreases bat speed and force production? The arms will subconsciously align themselves with the ball once a proper swing is developed if all factors are correct. Go to a high school game and find a good hitter, and ask him how much he thinks about aligning his bat with the ball when he gets his best hits after the game. How many amateur hitters has Sheffield developed?

Also, if you watch Gary Sheffield swing you will notice his arms are not extended at point of contact since it is unnatural to do so. Isn't it funny when kids get their best hits it's because they didn't actually think about each component of the swing and didn't swing hard? It's because they swung in one complete and fluid motion.

Bet you hit A LOT of ground balls...Swinging down on a pitch that comes in on a downward plane=Groundballs or weak pop-ups everytime. try looking at some hitting mechanics that work before you make a video to confuse kids, do not EVER be locked out at contact... and do not EVER swing Down on a ball...swing through it...staying on the same plane as the pitch.

The biggest problem with swinging down on the pitch is you can't possibly recruit the maximum power in your swing since you are incorporating more than one movement into your swing. Also, you will miss the ball often times.

this is for advanced batters, not learners. You want to take a direct path to the ball. swinging through a ball comes natural to good batters. too over emphasize take a direct path to the ball he went straight down.

Backspin is a popular response and that always makes me laugh. Dont u think a hitter would benefit more if he swang "Level to the Pitch"? Think about that. Thats not level to the ground. Level to the pitch suggests a slight upswing. And look at ur arms at contact point.
