Which imbecile thought it would be good to equip the body of your assault on the factory - humanities last chance as far as UNIT is concerned - with BERETS? In 'Doctor Who - UNIT Prepare for battle' they all have gas-masks on, in this they are wearing colourful targets on their head. You'd expect the Earth's elite anti-alien military force to be equipped with helmets, or even simple non-red headgear!
@alexander33345 Yeah, but if (hypothetically) there was smoke and stuff in a corridor and the lights were out, black helmets would have an advantage over bright red berets. Headgear such as that which is used by the British Army would also protect from shrapnel and protect the radios carried by the soldiers. It would also make them look ali, which is the most important pert...
@MrJKapowey British troops patrolled the streets of Basra with Berets on in order to reassure the locals despite the fact that Basra was still an extremely dangerous combat zone. Plus its pretty badass and telling the Sontarans that "we're so hard, we don't even need helmets!"
this should explain your Sontaran armor problem. thank wiki.
UNIT's personnel have a wide range of weaponry to call on, some custom-made to combat specific threats. Among these are armour-piercing munitions for use against robots and Daleks, explosive rounds for Yetis, silver-tipped rounds for werewolves and vampires, gold-tipped rounds for use against the Cybermen, and rad-steel coated bullets to neutralise Sontaran anti-bullet fields that target copper
That werewolves and vampires bit is actually just made up. Wikipedia quotes Battlefield on that, but in Battlefield, the Brigadier actually says "Armour piecring rounds, could go through a Dalek. Explosives for Yetis, and gold-tipped bullets for you-know-what" To which the Doctor replies "What, no silver?" So the Brig requests some. They never say what silver could be for, but they later prove handy against the Great Destroyer. Plus UNIT never encounter vampires or werewolves on-screen.
@tic07096903 Basically, the script demanded that UNIT get slaughtered so Martha has a reason to use Indigo. But if you'd like to try coming up with a sensible reason as to why they didn't use them, be my guest.
really it was pretty stupid of the doctor to try and give the sontarans a chance to go away because if luke hadn't done that thing he did then the doctor would be dead and then the dalek's plan would have been done right and they would control the universe.
Yeah. That was a stupid design flaw. I know that they used a cordalne signal to stop the bullets but the armour proves that they didn't have a backup plan to prevent possible DEATH!
But a modern soldier in body armor could still be killed by a pointed stick (if they were hit in the right place) presumably space warfare at the Sontaran level evolved past projectile weapons, hence their armor only protects them against lasers and such. That's the best explanation I can come up with.
Yeah UNIT do get their revenge, but that Sontaran without the helmet on... how did he not get hit at almost point blank range? Sheesh! Talk about unrealistic!
Sontarans are so confident that they make their body armor out of tissue paper.

Its a shame the Brigadier wasnt there. He would have finally got to see an alien menace that wasn't immune to bullets!

@SnakeOnAPlane What I don't understand is why they didn't think to use their armour piercing rounds in "The Stolen Earth"

@SnakeOnAPlane because UNIT were overwhelmed before, if they could use that tactic on the sontarans, it would crush them as it did in the video

@SnakeOnAPlane Silver was the only thing that destroyed the classic Cybermen.

@mgailp Wrong. Gold killed Cybermen. Silver was brought in as a suggestion by the Doctor.

Old school Sontarans were much tougher. These wussies were taken down by bullets, while the classic ones were able to overpower the TIMELORDS.

So much for the doctor telling the Colonel never to engage them in battle, the army kick their ass!

UNIT, not the army. There's a difference.
