well that was just about the best tutorial vid on anything ive ever watched, thank you so much, I dont think i there was a single second of dud info and i also think i understood everything, thanks again !!!
at 3:50 and thereabouts, they tell you not to crush your umbrella shaft. you can help prevent doing this by taking your umbrella to the hardware store and buying a dowel that will fit the shaft. cut the dowel to the appropriate length and you won't crush the shaft. This idea is not new to me. I forget where I first read it so i regret I'm not giving credit where credit is due, but i am passing on some great information.
Thanks for the video. In less than 8 minutes I learned a lot about flash/strobes/speedlights. I definitely recommend this video to anyone who is interested in learning how to use their flash.
I like the bit about the DMV. Everyone in the country has to have there picture taken by them at some point, the least they can do is learn a little about lighting.
This was so helpful to me. And you weren't kidding about the umbrella adaptors being deviously packaged to lead you to use them incorrectly. Mine came with the hotshoe adaptor on the side of the swivel that goes on the stand. I never would have known to switch that had I not watched your video (probably 5 times) before starting! Anyway, THANK YOU!
Can anybody recommend me the CHEAPEST flash unit possible for off camera flash???
I plan to purchase an ebay "wireless flash trigger" from an HK manufacturer, and i just want a really cheap flash that is compatible with this unit.... ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!
ANY FLASH works fine, those triggers work with everything - they just shoot for themselves, sometimes, due to the fact that they have NO shield for interferences like cellular phones or radio antennas. I had a session near the harbour here in Barcelona and they fire constantly every 10 seconds due to boat radars.
Apart of this, they work fine. Suggestion: buy a couple, they may get broken fast or just come non-working.
Check out Vivtar 285's. Theyre cheap (REALLY CHEAP) built like a tank.. They take some getting used to and they're not as fancy as a sb900 or a 580ex2 but they are, most importantly, CHEAP.
Wow, that was shockingly helpful. I stumbled upon the strobist site today without any sense of why lighting might really matter, what you could do with it, or how you might do it. In 8 minutes, I got a much better sense than from the many webpages I'd read before finding this video. Thanks.
Great job! I´ve photographed for years and this has really helped me. I just bought a Canon 580ex and an umbrella, so I look forward to using this information!
My first YouTube comment to be posted! You broke my YouTube cherry!! What a great video. Im just now getting into this and this video has really allowed me to see the "light". Make another video about the use of wireless. Thanks!
I would rate this the best video here on youtube. You managed to tell people in less than 8 minutes, what some people would take hours on end. Awesome!!! This i a must watch video for everyone who go to the Strobist site. It would be so nice if you would take more videos. Thanks a tonne, that was really really cool.
This video has the perfect tempo and just the right amount of info. Damn near perfect. Next step would probably be just plugging into the matrix and downloading info into your brain
"perhaps the most spectacular way to screw things up" hahaha. well done. thanks for this though, i've put on my umbrella backwards more than once when i first had it.
This is one of the most educative and clear video on the tube, great way to explain basic strobbing, without wasting words and going straight to the point.
Listen, I want to thank you VERY much for taking the time to put this together. It is very informative and it has helped me tremendously. I can't thank you enough. As you mention in the video, many or all of these items come with no instructions. Diving into this form of lighting for the first time would have been next to impossible without this introduction. Cheers -
Good video linked to a good site. Provides ideas and techniques at a cost we can all afford. In many ways the amateur photographer is working in isolation, this video and site gives you people to bounce ideas of and an opportunity to learn. Many thanks

Excellent video, your demonstrations were awesome and consistent, something most lighting comparisons really seem to miss. I knew most of the language before from reading Strobist but now it all makes more sense!
You should make more lighting and photography videos, your production editing and wealth of information is really perfect for learning on the web!
Useful, clear, concise. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It really helps a lot. All I need to do now is get some equipment and go out to practice.
Please please be fair and tell the beginners learning about lighting and photography that "Strobist" is not the best way to light things and especially when trying to learn lighting and how light works. As it does not have modeling lights for them to see whats going on.. Also Strobist was a thing used for situations were you need to travel light and use hotshoe flashes instead of big studio lights. Nothing more nothing less.. Be clear in explaining this. Beginners try to understand this..
I've been reading Strobist for a while but I still found this very helpful. The jargon of Strobism can be a bit overwhelming at times and this is very clear and concise. I've just got my GI trigger, now I need a light stand and a few other odds and ends...

do you want ttl? or not?
if you do the canon nikon offer is the cheapest
otherwise theres some really cheap no ttl stuff around
lagook 2 years ago
hhmm so far i think ttl is not needed, i just want to get started basically, and upgrade as i go.
the wireless triggers i plan to buy are either the ebay RT-04 or those from gadget infinity. So any cheap flash would do? even lets say a canon 200e?
thanks again
