  • You're right. Then the other way around.

  • one of the best tracks of the 80s. love it

  • This song I can jam out to! =)

  • The inspiration song and video for Everybody Wants to Rule the World

  • @grovegreener but everybody came out first in 1985...how could this inspire it????

  • another great group that kitchenware records had faith in

  • Great song. Wish they were on itunes.

  • I am from the north east of england and proud of my sunderland cousins. Well made.

  • Fabulous tune! It's a pity that radios, when concerning the eighties music, only pass the rubbish and left songs like this out of their playing lists...

  • wow, forgot about this one, talk about a blast from the past. wonder why the "oldies" stations dont play stuff like this?

  • Great song from '87.

  • I wonder if that black guy can do those summer salts anymore?

  • One of my all time favorites - came out my Freshmen Year at WVU and I remember my friend Jeanette thought it was written just for "Morgantown" (where WVU is located). :-)

  • Reminds me of late 80s summers

  • Motortown is so great that they made the video in sunny California.

  • @endgammer It was written about the state of manufacturing in NE England , especially Nissan in Sunderland

  • @Duncan038 ahh..got it. Makes sense

  • a mi me fascina esta cancion, gracias desde Mexico

  • Who's that hot dude w/ the long hair in the car??? Loved seeing Cabazon again, lol!

  • The 80's bring us good memories and a kind of sound that will never repeat. This music is very beautiful. Today there are many good things but like 80's never more. Os anos 80 nos traz boas lembranças e um tipo de som que não se repetirá jamais. Essa música é muito bonita. Hoje existem coisas boas mas como o que foi feito nos 80, nunca mais.

  • This is a great song that should've been a much bigger hit, I wish this song was available on iTunes cause it's hard to find in stores and you never come across this song on the radio airwaves

  • @Doobie1975

You can download this song from this video to itunes, just as you can do with ANY Youtube video, including mine! Google "Video2mp3" for the conversion site.

  • A truely brilliant song from a brilliant album. It took me ages to get hold of this album again but so glad i found it.Great memories too

  • this should come to iTunes

  • @xh34dsh0tk1ngx

Download it to itunes from this video. Google "Video2mp3".

  • I always liked this song...reminds me a little of Donald Fagan now and then.

  • Things were so much simpler then.

  • I've been looking for this video for years!!!! Thanks for putting it up. This is one group whose career was cut short too soon.

  • This freakin song is incredible!!!

  • Feel good music , love the 80s me....

  • In the 80's we all were human.

    Now we're just virtual :(

  • There are some songs that make me feel...just wow. Songs by Hurrah, Johnny Hates Jazz, even Tears For Fears to an extent. Just so carefree good, ey?

  • It really sucks you can't download this song on ITunes and Zune.

  • this is about my dads home town washington thumbs up:D

  • @jakeo989 Nissan car factory

  • Hit #12 AC, #36 pop in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg According to Wikipedia it hit UK #45.

  • @DaveWollenberg The AC charts doesn't matter. They never have

  • @PopCulture20 you're more of a pop/rocker, right? God bless!

  • A great song indeed, fond memories of hearing this song for the first time in the best car I ever had, my 1984 Ford Tempo GLX, proof that an American car company CAN make an economical front wheel drive compact car that is actually fun and somewhat luxurious to drive.

  • I like the 12" cruising version of motor town (6`22)

  • sounds like steely dan

  • I like this. It's been since 1989-90 when I last heard this track. Thanx for posting this.

  • Aereo:

Gracias por questo video. I have been looking for this video and song for 23 YEARS! so glad you posted it. how can i get a copy???? Thanks for bringing back some great memories!!! Loved this song and video this band rocked!!

    Gracias!!!

  • Mikedtn, do some research before posting rubbish ! The kane Gang had numerous hits placing a lot higher than this song. one hit wonder, where did you get that from ? On the right hand side you can clearly see all their videos that you can choose from you retard !

  • Hit #36 in the US (Billboard).

  • One hit wonder ? Where did you get that from ? The Kane gang had a number of hits including respect yourself. Do your research before posting .

  • Was this before or after Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants To Rule The World?" Song and video have many similarities...

  • after, this was 1987 , and the TFF song was 85

  • Fantastic music, fantastic times!

  • Fantastic song about my home town.

  • cheerful song xxxxxxx

  • @GraemeBT good.great place dude..be proud

  • Comment removed

  • Where are you when we need you Kane Gang? sigh...

  • Wedge haircut

  • 80's were great..not one effing rap song in rotation. Had to go to urban station to listen to that crap. Can you imagine this being on the radio today.

  • I can also picture Boz Scaggs performing this song

  • magnifica cancion me recuerda mucho la epoca dorada de W FM buenos tiempos buena musica

  • A searing indictment of the delusion that the loss of manufacturing in the 1980's was acceptable. They 'work for pennies in Motortown', a deunionised low wage economy left people to the mercy of the unregulated market. From that you get inequality and social breakdown. The Kane Gang were ahead of their time in nailing the folly of laying to waste whole communities in the north east and elsewhere. A good pop tune with a lesson even more urgent in 2009.

  • Indeed...The cars roll by

    The old steelyard

As the weeds grow high.....everybodys glory bound, bowing down in motortown

  • lovely,,why cant we all be there and be happyxx

  • @eightiessongs You need to study micro economics -- before you pop off your mouth. You know not what you speak!

  • @eightiessongs or maybe its just meant to ummmmmmmm sound good

    lulz

btw it does sound good its my fav song!!!

  • I called a radio station to request this on Awesome 80s nite. The station didn't have it but the host complimented me on the awesomeness of the choice. And Nick Jonas has earned Coolness Points with me by expressing his admiration of this underappreciated classic. Isn't it a shame when songs like Lionel Ritchie's "Dancin' On The Ceiling" got more airplay than this did in the 80s?

  • i never understood how radio stations do 80's request nights (mostly on weekends) and not have a song u request.. this was a top 40 hit and they don't have some sort of copy?? i quit calling in to those long time ago...

  • One of the best songs to come out of the 80's!!

  • GREAT SONG GREAT TUNE SO RELAXING

  • Hell it DOES sound like something that Steely Dan would do,there Doobie---good call!!!!

  • The guys voice sounds like Pee Wee Herman

  • This song is actually about Washington in the UK and the Nissan car factory.

  • L.A. is the real motortown. There are more cars there by far than any other city in the U.S. Love this awesome song!!

  • Great tune, there's a couple versions out there but hard to find. This is the 1st time I've seen the video & it reminded me of Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World. Same scenes, & routines (See Dinosaur truck stop 1:45 into video, brothers dancin in suits in the desert ) Not sure why the song didn't get more air time & you never hear it on Satellite radio either? Maybe it was too similar to earlier Tears 4 Fears clip? Too bad. Glad somebody saved this for us, Cool Runnin Mon

  • Awesome video. Awesome song. Wish it would get on iTunes.

  • i agree,

    joe jonas

  • great song guys!!!!!!!!!!!

    ------- nick jonas

  • i don't remember this song from the 80's but I agree with the 12 year old What a great song! Its very "style council". Combine this with "respect yourself" and this is a great band. Why wasn't this a major hit? How good were they?

  • This song brings back so many great memories of the late 80's. Those were the best times.

  • i'm 12 even i think this is kewlest song ever, get chills tears joy

why isnt this a big hit, who r these guys wow real good. thought i was the only blond blue eye cracker who likes r&b,

my friends say so. kane dudes you stole this song from black

people but it still sounds great, the ojays couldnt have done it better, should get a grammy

  • ESPERO QUE SEA DE TU AGRADO

  • Takes me back to my days as a junior in high school. Love It!!

  • I remember seeing this video when I was four years old, back in '87

  • Finally! I have been looking for this song for years, hears it on Sirrius on a Rick Dees countdown show and bought a copy. Beautiful sound

  • LOL paul woods playing keyboard

  • Great song but this would be considered smooth jazz if it was released today

  • Cool video. It was nice being in it! 3 takes, the 1st one made it in. That,s me in the V.W. rabbit,(that wasn't my car. Part of the video props). That was the '80s for sure. Thanks guys 4 the MTV exposure. Tommy Lou......

  • Are you one of the guys in the car accident? That's wild! What have you been up to since then?

  • Hey! Thanks! Tommy Lou here! Yea I'm the guy in the wreck!! lol, In the white v.w. car, That's me! I was an extra, but you all knew that! Just living Life 1 day at a time. Check out myspace; Tommy Lou Peace and Love Late!!

  • hey i got sober to this song! still going strong 25 yrs later. i didn't know who sang it, then stumbled onto it. brings back good times, 3 meetings a day, and not a care in the world! thanks, Joe

  • Man this song bring me back to my high school days

  • Every time I heard a snippet of this song on the radio or on speakers in a store/restaurant, I always wondered who did it - I was thinking it was either The Doobie Bros. or Steely Dan . . .

Now that I know, it looks to me like this group had sort of a Joe Jackson/Breakfast Club vibe, especially after seeing the video . . .

    .

  • I used to think it was Steely Dan who did this song myself, great song

  • Cracked the Top 40 but certainly has more of a cult-following for most. Quality cruising track as said before.

  • I can relate to this! Looks like it was filmed on the way to Las Vegas!

  • Love the guitar work on this record takes me back this was from a great album still sounds like lush summer pop to me !!

  • One of my favourite tunes of al time! Brill!!!!

  • best vid on u tube!!!! easierly!!!

  • pure belter

  • thnk you for posting this song I always asked at the town radios and nobody could tell me how's its name, finally after almost 10 years searching i found one of the best songs i've ever heard in my entire hole life...thanks again

  • Always loved this tune. Another great slice of 1987.

  • The song was apparently about Japanese car makers Nissan setting up shop in Washington, Tyne & Wear in the late 80s.

I wish the North East was like where this video was filmed.

  • This video was filmed in the southwestern United States back in 1987...it seems to be uncommon for UK music acts to have their videos shot in America.

  • i´m from chile and one month ago (jun 2008) finally found this song after 13 years searching for it. it was the last of my 2876 favourit songs from 80s collection. i want to send my regarts to the composers of this magnificent peace of work that defines one of the most prolific and beatiful period on musical pop making. my best regards too for all the fans that enjoy the album and for those that want to lisen more souldfull song i recomend the other songs in the same album. really well done job.

  • Super cool soulful track...totally awesome

  • don't forget "don't disturb this groove" by the system as a great cruise tune

  • I've finally seen the video after 20+ years!

This song, along with "Everybody wants to rule the world" by Tears for Fears and "My Everchanging Moods" by the Style Council are the best cruising songs ever made! If you do any long-distance driving, they'll definately refresh your spirits better than anything put out today. "THANX!!!"

  • what a blast from the past! I was a production assistant on this video and the woman who was supposed to be in the video got sick, so they enlisted me... three times! Blue dress, highway driver, clapper - what a hoot! thanx YouTube for 'Clip Hit of the Month' memories...heehee

  • Are you the brown haired girl?

  • Yep. that's me.

  • Hi there, I am close friends with Paul Woods, the Keyboard player and backing vocals in the group. We have chatted about that video many times. Its a big blast from the past for me to. I will pass your comments to Paul...with regards

  • Please give my best regards to Mr. Woods, and, if possible, to the other gentlmen in the group. This is absolutely one of my favorite songs. Between the Singing, the Keyborad, and the Guitarist, the atmosphere created and listening pleasure is powerful, and extraordinary.

  • Hi, I actually know Dave Brewis very well (guitarist) and I'm actually a guitarist myself one video we talked a lot about was respect yourself which i think is also a good song if i see him soon i will give him your regards bigdan250!

  • We are as lucky as hell to have Kane Gang on here. What a treat. I think both of their albums have been remastered on to a single cd: "The Miracle of Kane Gang". Get it! :)

  • Thank god 4 Google & U-Tube, 'cuz without it would never prolly found this gem :D searched 'we work 4 pennies in motortown', & POOF! There I know what the band is, then Youtube has the vid!

The days of himeys @ MTV dictating what's available 2 watch R over - WHOOP!

  • brilliant to hear this again. One of the great driving songs from a much underrated band. Can anyone out there post the follow up to this ''What time is it''

  • Todo el sello de las buenas canciones de los 80´s. definitivamente te recuerda los buenos tiempos.

  • Great road music...

  • Great song bought the album in 1987 called The Miracle. Can anyone tell me what kind of hat Martin Brammer is wearing???

  • A fedora...

  • Thanks for this post :)

  • Great Song.

Reminds me of Tears for Fears/Chris Rea. I wouldn't be surprise if Steely Dan wrote the song?

  • I don"t think many people realise this song is about the Nissan car factory in Sunderland UK.Its nothing to do with America.

  • What a treat this is! This song has great optimistic energy to it. I thought so then and still do. Are they still making songs like this?

  • Optimistic songs these days? Good luck with that; the angst and anger has taken over and eaten the kids' souls with it. So sad but we'll always have our days...

  • has the same feeling as Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears....mmm...might hve had an influence perhaps?? Either way a great song!!!

  • Great song...reminds me of driving around the SoCal desert cities in the 70's

  • This is definitely an underrated and obscure classic, you sure don't come across this great classic very often, I remember hearing this song on the intercom at Shopko back in around 2000-01 and forgotten all about the song until when I've heard on SIRIUS 8 The Big 80's.

This song is deserving of a Top 10 position of the Billboard Charts.

  • This song has a definite Southern California beat!!! Love it! Gosh I miss Southern Cali! Thanks for posting!

  • en mexico esta canción sono un par de meses en stereo 100, seguro casi nadie la recuerda, la busque por años, gracias aereo, me trae buenos recuerdos de mi vida en la universidad, buenos tiempos los 80s, saludos desde acapulco mexico

  • Good song, i love it back then but i forgot the name of the band and i was very happy to find it here on youtube. The other hit that i disn't knew that was from then is the closest thing... Why they disapeared so fast?

  • Got to #36 back in '87. Cruising tune for sure.

  • i dont' understand why kane gang didn't have a million hits but wet wet wet do ?

  • this vid reminds me of the movie far from home, from the building their in in the dessert and also the guy working on his car

  • Anybody have "What time is it?"?

  • cailingaelach1970

Yes, I want to hear that one again too.

Off to Amazon for the 'Best Of', I think.

  • new best of double cd just released.

    check online retailers.

  • what a excellent song you can't find this on billboard charts or even Itunes tommorow im gonna see if I can find the cd/cassette.

  • One of my favorite tunes. Even though I discovered in 1994.

  • Love it

  • I still have the 12" extended mix of this song. Glad to see that I'm not the only one who remembers this song and band.

  • one of my fave 80's songs

  • one of the best CDs in my collection

  • My dad said - finally found this song i like, which i heard 20 years ago and i finally found the title!!!!!

  • thanks tims i ll have a look on amazon

  • You can find the CD on amazon, but it will cost you. If I'm not mistaken it costs around 35.00 give or take.

  • great song. Can t but this album anywhere been looking for years.

  • Almost tearful with nostalgia.

    Love It !

  • could somebody post the video for "Don't Look Any Further?" Believe it was the followup to "Motortown"......

  • I know it aired on Night Tracks on TBS.

  • No song takes me back to'87 like this one(maybe tell it to my heart, too) it melts me...........

  • Another great song they did was RESPECT YOURSELF I remember them on TOTPs in late 1984 with PP ARNOLD.Should have been a big hit.

  • I also think of 'What time is it'?, when I hear this...and the story of the woman who got away...

  • Did they sing the closest thing to heaven ? That was a great song. I can't find it on you tube thought.

  • Tragic, I cant find it either, and it was beautiful!

  • Vid mirrors "Everybody Wants To Rule" by TFF. Still one of my all-time favs.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you - the atmospherics of this song is one in a million!

  • From a great album,Miracle, shame more people don't get to hear it...good pop is timeless.

  • Nice tune! I treasure their cd´s. As good and fantastic as underrated.

  • Love this song. Kinda sad though when I first saw the video, because deep down I knew that it was a farewell song from them. Good info' about the Nissan factory. Cheers. God bless you all.

  • This song (and you'd never believe it from this video!) was actually about the opening of a Nissan Car factory in their town of Sunderland, and how people said it would save a dying community that had previously been based on ship-building and coal mining. The group's message was that it was more an exploitation of cheap labour in the region ('spread the word all around, they work for pennies in Motortown').

  • Thanks for sharing this one, I always wanted to see this video, very nice. Maybe somebody upload "Closest thing to heaven" someday huh, that'd be awesome!

  • Many of the songs fromt those days had a similar vibe or something...I don't know what exactly... But isn't that exactly what we love about them?

Gorgeous song!!! Thanks for posting the video!!! :D

  • Yes, it has the 'tears for fears' air, but..who cares?...great pop!

  • I have strange feelings when I listen to this song. I liked it a lot back in the 80's.

  • WONDERFUL! This is a real feel-good song. The world can never have enough.

  • Nice song, but it's dripping with "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" elements. The shuffle feel, the car in the desert. The chorus even begins with Everybody. Nevertheless, it's a great track.

  • VH1 hammered this vid...easy-goin' pop to put the top down to...

  • I just bet DISCO SQUIRRELS will love this ROFL LOL great song

  • I think of this song every time a Detroit team wins a championship, most notably the Pistons and Red Wings, and I think the Tigers are also going to prompt some airplay in a week or so...
