That's true of some of the speakers, however the winners have learned how to connect with the audience, spontaneously. To get a better idea of how the winners became winners, I recommend the "25 Years of 3-2-1" - the top 3 winners from 25 years of speech contests, available from Bill Stephens Productions at billspro.com.
Most people will disagree with me, but I thought most speeches, or performances to be more precise, to be too faked, too well rehearsed. They seemed more like actors, focusing on acting out their message, instead of focusing on their message and genuinely caring about what they have to say.
2:17- I don't understand how Robin Grieve managed to win the New Zealand competition. His mannerism, his voice and his speech is both boring and unenlightening. Where is his passion? His speech doesn't inspire nor does it bring out emotion within a person. A good orator is supposed to cause emotion, and make a person think about what they have said. Disappointing New Zealand, you have so much talent, lets see it please!!

feedback:
I think speeches are creative and inspiring.
In order to improve, I think speakers must use a pause between the first sentence, the greeting and the introduction.
It seems like a "I-must-say requirement" rather than a positive and powerful
transition. Pauses are necessary.
Sometimes we need the "Dory Speaking Whale" exercise to improve ;)
I've seen other speakers and pause they use are great!!!!!

Some things champion speakers have in common: energy, humor, inspiration. They all deserved to win!
