  • Holy crap! If you want to hear the song exactly as it is on the CD, listen to the fucking CD. It's his song and he can play it any damn way he wants! In this case, it was a lovely, fun version.

  • Professeur Paul .... je t'aime!!!!

  • Im sure Paul gets fuckin tired of playin this song the same "normal" way. None of his live shows ever sound the same as Graceland. Change it up a bit

  • is there one young live version left he plays in the normal way? i mean as like as recorded on graceland? i dont understand why he destroys such a wunderful song in that horrible way!?!?

  • that gguy at the start has got to be gay

  • I don't know what you think is wrong with this, I like it.

It's just fooled around with, I also change it a lot whenever I whistle, hum it or sing it in the shower : p I've been listening to this wonderful song for a looooong time now.

  • This version is horrible

  • 6 people don't have diamonds on the soles of their shoes

  • i imagine after years and years they are sick of playing the same song, more power to them to keep it interesting for themselves, it's not bad it's just different from the oiginal

  • i imagine after years and years they are sick of playing the same song, more power to them to keep it interesting for themselves

  • 1.56 the bass player sneaks in a sexy little lick

  • shit version

  • @canvoodoo for want of a better word, I agree with you.

  • Maybe in comparison with other versions, this song sounds quite poor, but I'm not that familiar with the original, and it sounds really good to me.

Take it as a song on its own, and it's great.

  • @Mighty0range watch the version in Africa... destroys this. This feels forced. Graceland is my favorite album of all time and this does the song ZERO justice

  • what's up with this .... is he plastered ?

  • This is a great version of the song with a beautiful dialog between the instruments. Only the better songwriters are capable of changing a song and make it sound fresh and worthwhile to listen to. Also the band plays the song superb.

  • Well this pretty much sucks...how dissappointing.

  • i like some of paul simon's songs, this is my favourite but this is a dreadful performance unfortunately :o(

  • I saw Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Brisbane on Monday (30/6/09). They didn't do Diamonds. Is that a copyright thing?

  • This version is awful, Im currently doing a theoritical analysis of this song for my university and they've just simplified absolutely everything?! The only thing thats the same is the bass guitar response to the guitar riff but there's not guitar riff in the first place, they should've got the original line-up back or not bothered at all

  • Can i get back to sawwing off my leg please ? -)

  • by all means!

  • I'm a massive fan of the original, i grew up surrounded by it. This is just a different take on the instrumentation, the sentiment and meaning is still there. The overdriven strat replicates and strengthens one of the horn parts, the lead line is funked up to help the slightly more 'filled out groove', and they try and cover as many harmonies as they can. (I know they're no Ladysmith, but its a good effort) :)

  • @grebbington hopefully you know by now, if you have your have pursued your studies (which I doubt given your firdt reaction) that your comment was a bit dumb, to say the least. Brilliant performance! Simpler is not always less.

  • @1234pjotr one thing, firstly slightly weird that you felt the need to comment on a post which is two years old but fair play you had something to get off your chest, secondly not sure why my "reaction" would suggest any lack of education or commitment to education? either way got a first on the paper and a first overall so kind of makes it a moot point. Thirdly I didn't deny the performance was great, but the arrangement was where I took issue. Anyway, all in all, have a nice day

  • the one in africa is so much better with that chior behind him

  • I too saw the Bris show last night, wasn't it just something?

This song was off the hook.

  • Ive never heard the pair in better tune....

  • I saw S & G lastnight in Brisbane and Paul did the most awesome version of this song that will stay with me for life.....Thanks for a great night guys...

  • good god he's crucified the original awesome riff to a simplified version. Cry Travesty, and let slip the dogs of shit...

  • That's what happens when you get older.

  • This song defined my childhood. Best song of all time on a truly GREAT album.

  • the "ta na na na na na na na na na...." at 4:56 is GREAT!!!!!

    Paul Simon <3

  • i wish i have diamond on the soles of my shoes.

  • Wow...nice version! These "Old" musicians are "maestros of their art"!...they are the real teachers! Thanks Paul Simion for making the South Africa grooves known all over the world!

  • Did Paul sing 'You're The One' at this show?

  • why are you doing this?

  • I think this is a great version! I love his work with and without Art Garfuncle, I think he is getting a tad old now tho, he doesnt pack as much impact as he used to, But Hey its Paul Simon you cant realy critisise!! Thanks for posting this!

    =]

  • I don't know what you guys are talkin about I think this is a great performance

  • It is perfect. Almost crying here.

  • what an honor to play with gadd man, I would shit myself

  • bad performance.

  • it was this performace I caught by random one day on BBCi that reminded me of Graceland! Last time I had listened to it before this was when I was 10!

  • I like the other version with the great Ray Phiri better, but this is still owesome.

Thanks Paul, for helping to promote African culture, it is much appreciated, many families were fed because of you.

  • Dear NY-Zulu: Would u appreciate the fact in this rendition there's much more African Urbanness in it than in earlier takes, wouldn't u? Every take available has its own advantage I admit though...

  • This version is really awesome. Thanks for posting!

  • its gotta b one of my fav tracks on the "Graceland" album.

  • is that bakitha khumalo on Bass?

  • Yes, it is Bakithi Kumalo.

  • the legend that is :)

  • I really like this new wrinkle.Thanx for posting.Would probably've not seen this in America otherwise.
