The Turks carried out a horrendous genocide against the Armenian and Assyrian peoples during WW1 and it's disgraceful that they still deny it. The desecration of the monument is disgusting but unfortunately it is typical of turkish behaviour over the years.
@Atouraya2165 I was born here, I don't harp on about race or blood. My statement from before has nothing to do with ancestry. You're the one talking about race not me. If anything you're the racist. I was again referring to "another" country's moment being erected here. If you migrate to another country you are suppose to integrate. The only moments that a nation should have are its OWN. People who migrate and retain their culture AND erect moments is COLONISATION!
@insanic1 forcibly building monuments is COLONISATION, not when the council says you can, theres dozen of monuments here from alot of different ethnicities, i disagree with your comment the only monument a nation should have is its own. If its for a good cause or to raise awareness it should be built, and the assyrian genocide and genocide in general is a good cause to raise awareness about,im all for equality your the racist that only wants ' Australian' monuments here.
@Atouraya2165 I guess then this is where we will disagree. I think this monument is best suited in an Assyrian nation separate from the surrounding nations that's solely Assyrian in culture and that Assyrians who leave they native land and move to another country shouldn't go around erecting monuments dedicated to their own history and should instead integrate into their new host nation. Along with every other ethnic group.
@insanic1 Problem is there is no Assyrian nation, we were promised land during WW1 and when we won the war England turned their backs on us and we then endured the genocide. If Australia is as multicultural as it claims then there should be no problem with having multicultural monuments in and around suburbs such as Fairfield which is a Assyrian stronghold. The Aboriginal elder of bonnyrigg permitted us to built the monument her also gave us a traditional welcoming song.
Foreign? I think that the department of immigration will disagree with your definition of "foreign". By your definition, first generation Australians are also foreigners, so the only true Australians that remain are the Aboriginals. For your information, the Aboriginals have performed their smoke ceremony on that land because the land originally belonged to them and the monument has their blessing.
Provocative is not the building of the monument, but it is the negligence and denial of the ignorant Turkish government who think that by denying the genocide, they can wipe off their dark history. As long as they deny the genocide, monuments will be built to remind them of their dark past. It's the price they have to pay for burrying their heads in the sand and pretending that nobody has noticed the actions of their forefathers.
Right the genocide didn't happen. just like the genocide against, Armenians, Assyrians, Lebanese, Kurds, Pontic Greeks, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Balkans, Greeks, Cypriot Greeks. Even Arab Moslems were not spared the sword of the Ottoman. No wonder Europe doesn't want Turkey.
The holocaust of 3 million Christians in Turkey is so well documented with video footage, eye witness accounts and even admissions by Kemal Ataturk himself, that it is bizarre that Modern Turkey still denies it
I don't see why its controversial. Assyrians build a momument which is a reminder of one of the largest massacres ever and is still to this day not recognised as a genocide. But whats highly ironic, damaging the momument only gives it more recognition. So assyrians have come out looking even better. So good job turks. lol
This was bound to happen. You can't put up something as controversial as this and not expect some reprisals. I wonder what would the reaction be if the turks put up a monument and the same happened?
Thank you all for your encouraging words. The good news is that the monument restoration began on the same day that it was vandalised. AUA representatives onsite, plus a young group of Assyrians who became concerned after hearing the news had gone to the monument and in a joint effort cleaned up the mess by the evening of the same day. Khayitoon. This is what Assyrianism is all about.
It's sad to see people acting like Punk's... Every nation has it's problems. Let's face them and act like humans. They must have something to Hide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KHAYA ATOUR!

Until the vandalists are caught, it can't be blamed on any person or group, and all possibilies should be considered.
