Most of the U.S.-spec New Looks and Classics (see San Diego, Santa Monica, Denver, Grand Rapids and Salt Lake City) imported from Canada had used either the 8V-71N (until 1982) or the 6V-92TA (1981-86) Detroit Diesel engines.
Only in Boston and in GM's motherland, among other places, were there New Looks and/or Classics equipped with the 6V-71N.
This one of the few TTC D40s with the unique seating arrangement at the back as shown in the video. The seats between the rear doors to the rear row are always perimeter seats on TTC's units.
I know that these New Flyer D40-88 and D40-89s are still in service in the Greater Toronto Area, but the D40-87s and D40-90s are all retired. Did you get what I said?
When did those D40 89 buses retire?

Actually, this is in Canada.

yeah I kinda figured by the way the rear looked because in the U.S we have all buses usually setted up with REAR A/C

How many of these are left now?

On the new TTMG-org (replace the dash with a dot), there is a sound clip of Connecticut Transit #9312, a 1993 D40HF powered by the 6V-92TA and V-731.

6V92TA 4 years ago
Those were the all-retired D40-90 series. The D40-88s and 89s are powered by DDC 6V71N and Allison V731ATEC.

At least I got the paperbus of 2 D40-90s, plus 1 that I retraced to OC Transpo D40-90.

Yup, the 87s and 90s retired early to heavier frame corrosion.

... No wonder gthey were retired...

Do D40s uses the same powertrain combo (6v71 + V731) as the New Look? Because it sounds very similar! :)
nova9403 4 years ago
Yepper! This engine has more of a deeper sound. Just like the D901s.
ttcgeek 4 years ago
The powertrain is the same as the Classics, not as the New Looks. The D901s don't have the New Look powertrain either.
dyip90 4 years ago
Yeah... they (both the New Looks and the 1985 D901s) used the 6V-71N with the all-hydro V-730. The 1986 D901s were the first to use the 6V-71N/V-731.

LOL, more like a 1981-83 GMC RTS engine/transmission package...it still feels strange to ride a New Flyer/Flyer/Fishbowl with a RTS package!

i finally remember these engines on our D40HFs...
