When doing an engineering project with my friends, I suddenly remembered this video. We totally took advantage of the idea that if you have so many turns with a rope, you could use the frictional torque to your advantage. I love this guy! Walter Lewin deserves a nobel prize in physics!
His drawings are so good. Reminds me of my high school physics teacher. "So we will have a helicopter rising at 10m/s....ill just draw it here....its a blackhawk....some missiles..." real good drawer.
wait, why is there not friction at point P? I mean, its probably negligible but if there was not friction, there is now way the ladder can stand, ie. it is in unstable equilibrium. Right? I just think about the rubber on both the bottom and top of the ladder (stabilize the ladder)
i'm not intrested in this at all infact I sometimes have this guy talking in the background, as someone else said it is stimulating, and poeple please stop saying why are'nt others watching these things much more, half of the world already has enough of going school and learning, I guess they just want a break lol for real though stop saying daft things, you lot look like real geeks. lol anyhow I like this guy he does make things clear.
i have been watching his videos... i have no words to explain my appreciation for his lecture style, knowledge...and of course my appreciation of the subject itself has changed dramatically...Marvellous...you are awesome Professor!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the most awesome Physics professor when I was in college. His name was Jean Lecuyer who received his doctorate from the University of Chicago. He gave a better lecture than this guy and taught me how to study as well as the ability to understand the subject of physics. Physics is not an easy subject to teach.
I think its just American culture. We put more value into stupidity and vanity than we do into learning. For example, how does it make sense that a super model makes millions while a teacher educating the next generation of thinkers can't pay her own bills? I agree with you that it is ridiculous, but it is not likely to change soon without some fantastic change in events that impacts the way we see the world.
@itchy8me Yes, and don't forget about the 79,000,000+ views for some stupid kid after the dentist. I wonder what the average IQ is of YouTube viewers.
@itchy8me It's not such a sad thing that this video gets less views. Pleasure from science is no more virtuous than pleasure from entertainment. People need to be happy, and they will achieve it legitimately by means other than science.
i am so thankful for these videos. im currently receiving my education in National Junior College of Singapore, and i can say that the quality of lectures is far below par as compared to that of those in MIT. I daresay that ill benefit more from youtubing Walter Lewin lectures than attending those of my school physically
This is just amazing. I'm not doing this in school because I am too young, but just listening to these lectures is stimulating. It makes me feel like I attend MIT. This is fascinating. I am forever grateful to everyone that had a hand in making these videos happen.

Guys if anyone could refer me (tell me where i can find) to the integration that Lewin says at 24:40 it would be really appreciated.

Reminds me of my freshman college years doing engineering statics. So many things you can do with just a couple basic concepts!

Am I the only person that REALLY wanted to see the derivation of the slipping rope equation?
I tracked it down fairly quickly on Google. Search "Capstan Equation" and view the wiki article. It's awesome.
