Dec. 2011 Update for all those who have questioned the appearance of the EGR valve:
I still own this car. It's now done 150,000 miles and recently the turbo seems to be playing up. I thought it was worth checking the EGR again (first visit since I made the video). I can categorically refute any suggestion that ANYTHING is broken. Everything is as it should be, although I made need a replacement turbo unit - if anyone has one they don't want?
the vid helped thanks .. just to add .. .the main dirt you'll find . .will be in the part ( springed) left in the pipe .. but just to re interate this vid helpd ..
Nice video, but you should disconnect it. You can juste disconnect the ERG on Clio 2.2 (2001/12/2003) on 2.3 (2004/2006) you must found a solution... Personnaly il made some steel stopper before the ERG. it works since 80 000kms, an my engine says thank you !
A large part of the EGR valve has been left in the pipe, it should look like the one in 'How to remove and clean a Renault Modus 1.5 dci EGR Valve' there was no need to hit mine with a mallet just do the wiggling.
@Zaniwhoop Thanks for that. I can now see why there are so many comments on here re the EGR valve being broken. However, there was no sign of anything being other than it should've been when I dismantled it. Of course, never having done the job before, and with no manual to refer to it's hard to tell. Thanks for the link - the music on mine is better though :)
@dumbell2312 Hi, I would take professional advice on that! (Not from me in other words) I guess if it looks the same and the nuts and bolts are in the same place, you should be ok, but, as I say...
Fantastic - I can now find the egr valve and try it. Local mechanic couldn't locate it at first glance but diagnostics suggested fault as egr valve. As toxic warning light went out I left it at that. Now it's back on I'll have a go myself !
@RAFC1990 Hey buddy, i had the same problem with mine loosing power until higher in the revs, mine also puffed out black smoke, i have literally just been outside with my dad cleaned out the egr valve as instructed on this video, and took it for a spin and it now pulls better than ever! So i think this may be your problem also. Just thought i'd try and help!!

Ok, I will have to clean mine, since I already failed the smoke test when I went to the periodic technical inspection. Failing that in my country means no circulation rights for the vehicle until the problem is solved. As soon as I clean the whole system, I'll write an essay.
I don't have the technical means to do that. All I can say is the operation is rather simple once you unscrew the metal support of the hose (the strange long screw thingy which is under the EGR, in the very back of the engine rooom). Just pay attention not to hit the plastic connectors of the sensors once you dislodge them. Use a flexible brush like those used for washing the bottles on the inside and use petrol, not gasoline, for cleaning the rubber hoses.
You just solved half of the problem. You need to clean the insides of the rubber hoses and of the metal pipe who are connected with the EGR. Without that operation, you cleaned the EGR valve for nothing.
sorry mate that did nothing that was only half the egr valve you left the important part in side the manifold that was the part which is in need of cleaning
That screeching can be heard around 4:20. I strongly recomend not to use mallets or other hitting object when removing the EGR valve. You may damage it's electrical parts or even break small bits of it, bits which may fall inside that hole where the valve fits and then you are screwed.
The wistling of the car indicates a problem at one of the drums that hold the belt. If the servodirection pump is hidraulic, it may have a bearing that is about to die. If it is electric, there is a metal support with a wheel on it (their only purpose is to keep the belt tight) whose bearing is about to die. Am I paranoid or there is no liquid in the cooling system? The jar is empty.
idiots... this is wrong.... that EGR valve on video is broken..... but who cares.... what about that silver pipe near EGR ? today everyone is mehanic....
The EGR redirects some of the exhaust gases back into the burning chamber in order to cool off the mixture. This means a little less engine power and much lesser pollution. Without the EGR, the car works just fine, but it makes a thick black smoke which can clog your ceramics in the exhaust drum.
Hmm, could account for the slightly lower mpg. D'you want to send me a step-by step guide on how to remove and clean the pipes and I'll do a video of that (assuming an amateur like me can do it)?
Did you change the gasket at all or wasn't it necessary? I cleaned my EGR thoroughly, tested it with 12v to ensure it operated and refitted, but still have problems with power and smoke. Have tried no less than three different turbos in the course of diagnosis and although garages don't seem to want anything to do with it, they all reckon the EGR valve is to blame.
Hi, no, I didn't replace the gasket. I just cleaned the valve again 2 days ago, 'cos I was getting the smoke and power lag symptoms again, and it seems to have worked ok.
Without actually going to the effort of removing the airbox and going through it all again, I can't recall how the connector is held on, but since I didn't specifically show it on the vid, my guess is it's held on with a wee clippy thing which should release with fingertip pressure? Rocking it up and down might help? Best of luck... J
I have a Dynamique, same year. Why does the engine bay look completely different?
I'm also getting that age old problem where the Electric Fault lights illuminates on the dashboard and the engine rev's drop like a sack of shit and it tries to cut out. Anyone else had this problem? And know a fix?
i have a renault kangoo 2005 with the 1.5 dci engine which had a randem power loss problem. I carried out the EGR valve clean and its sorted. nice 1 for the video guidence. My valve was hard to get out of the housing, needed a few good clouts with a rubber mallet, but it was filthy with carbon and looked like it was not seating propperly. i wedged it open with a plastic wall plug and cleaned in petrol using a tooth brush, paying attention to the seats. cheers again.
What are the symptoms of a broken / dirty egr? I have a 1.9 dci 130hp megane and I'm really concerned about the weak acceleration before the turbo starts working on normal parameters (1800-2000 rpm). It's a really big discrepancy in power between where the turbo kicks in and before. It practically kicks you in the sit. Shouldn't the transition be smoother?
This Clio is a 65hp 1.5 DCi. I was concerned about the amount of black smoke produced when accelerating - that and the turbo delay similar to what you're describing (I didn't note the RPM though) plus a noticeable increase in fuel consumption. I decided this was a cheap fix to try myself before calling in the professionals (which I am most certainly NOT) - it worked for me; I obviously can't. guarantee it'll work for you. No harm in trying it though...
Mine doesn't cough any black smoke, not that I've seen any. It's also equipped with a particulate filter, which is retaining most of the soot I guess. I've been in service a few days ago to clean it, and the car ran great for about 50 kilometers, when the acceleration faded again. I'm also scheduled for a general inspection next week, I hope the problem will solved by the changing of the filters (especially the fuel filter which hasn't been changed for 25000 kilometers or so).
thx for this tuto !

Slaat nergens op. Dit is alleen de motor van de EGR. De klep zelf zit nog in het huis. Zinloze actie dus.

When you remove the ERG on the video, you broke it ... the part to wash is on the EGR box.
What you've made on the video serve to nothing ..

quella valvola si è rotta... deve uscire il pezzo che entra dentro.
e la parte esterna della plastica non bisogna pulirla perchè se arriva del liquido è da buttare visto che è la parte elettronica.

Ha ha the egr is snapped in half thats why you dont knock it out with a drift!! Cant see that working very well!!

Nope its in half mate, the other half is still stuck in the inlet manifold.

Err you do realise that valve is broken? And 9 times out of 10 the aluminium pipe is the main problem anyway!

@shepperdspie Sorry, beg to differ; this video was made over a year ago, has since done 30k miles and been serviced twice.

Should this sort out my power fault? It seems to have a complete lack of power until around 3,000 revs then it comes back.

Good advice, thanks.
BTW Well spotted; the coolant tank WAS low; it was filled after I made the vid.
This car is still running (without black smoke) I still do 80+ miles per day in it (118,000 mls).
