  • @MaladroitMony they built it up there it took them 9 years to build and get this someday did this On April 15, 2010 graffiti was sprayed on the statue's head and right arm. Mayor Eduardo Paes called the act "a crime against the nation" and vowed to jail the vandals, even offering a reward of R$ 10,000 on any information that may lead to an arrest.[13][14] The Military Police eventually identified house painter Paulo Souza dos Santos as the suspect of the act of vandalism

  • The Statue of Christ the Redeemer history starts in the XVIth Century when the Portuguese named the mountain Pináculo da Tentação (The Pinnacle [peak] of Temptation), alluding to the Biblical Mountain. A century passes and the mountain is re-baptized to Corcovado, a name derived from its form, which resembles a hump or hunchback. Then in 1924 when Dom Pedro personally led the first official expedition to Corcovado Mountain, resulting in the opening of an accessable way up.

  • Then in 1859 the Vincentian father Pedro Maria Boss arrived Rio de Janeiro and was struck by the mystorious beauty of the corcovado mountain and suggested the the construction of a religous monument in honour of Princess Isabel, which in 1921 gave way for the idea of a great statue of christ viewable by all in the marvelous city of Rio.

  • From 1859 to 1921, Dom Pedro gave his consent for the building of the Corcovado Railroad line between Cosme Velho and Paineiras, which would be an essential part of undertaking the RedentorIn 1922, on the markation of Brazilian independence and a milepeal in the Statue of Christ the Redeemer history, the work began for fullfilling the ambisious project with the fundamental stone beeing put inplace on the 22.april.

  • That sucks it isn't there anymore cause they destroyed it making that 2012 movie.

  • They didn't destroy it. o.o Those were computer effects... They wouldn't destroy something so important just for a movie.

  • You're an idiot I can't believe you took that seriously hahahaha. Thanks for the laugh.

  • dude you are a loser.

  • I'm not an idiot. I wouldn't know wether you were being sarcastic or not by reading text. Seriously... you're smart. >.>

  • WOW !!

I have to visit this monument before I die. Its so beautiful !!!

That mountain is insanely high and steep, thats what scares me...lol !!

Does anyone know how long it takes to get u there ??

  • shany9988, a drive from downtown to the christ probably takes 20 to 30 min depending on traffic conditions. and don't worry, even though its high and steep, it is actually kind of large so you dont really get to feel as scared as you think you might get

  • Oh cool thanks for the info. I was kinda shook for a minute looking at that mountain lol !!!

It was situated perfectly. A genius, whoever thought of the idea to put it way high up there, looking down at the city.

Beautiful statue. Theres a similar statue like this is Bolivia, I think.....

  • come to Rio and relax with the beaches to!!

  • @shany9988 20-30 minutes...

  • @shany9988 who is Cristo Redentor tell me his hostory

  • Respond to this video... nice

  • most people go by taxi, and is very expensive and is thru extremely dangerous neighborhood, so no way to walk.

  • there is a dangerous "hood" near it but they wont just like rob you.thats only in movies.they'll just get into fights with rival hoods but they wont just atack you for no reason thats just insane.

  • its not dangerous...relax with the beaches!

  • @gatorzil Rio is not so dangerous like Detroit...

  • I know where im going before i die

  • oh yeh.. and do you know where you're going after you die?

  • wow amazing how they built that... transfering the materials that high.

Anyways, how do u get up there? can u go using cars? or walk? or helicopter? hmmm... elevators underground? hehehe anybody know?

  • tks for the comments

most people go in cars (there is a good road).

some adventurers can go up walking, but its steep and sometimes very hot.

i dont think there are elevators.

there is a helipad nearby but you still need to take the car or walk a good distance

  • @valerieshane92

if I am not mistaken, there are trams that go all the way up, as also buses. The final sections you have to climb those stairs you see in the video, but if I am not mistaken, escalators have been installed too.

  • @valerieshane92 there's also a train that today is used for tourists to get up there but the train was initially used to transfer all the work material. It is all beautiful, nice and safe, I've been there like 10 times already, I'll email you a link about Christ the redeemer to your inbox :P
