@MichaelTranoid The DMR from Reach, as far as I know, was the prototype BR used before the Halo 2 and Halo 3 variants. The books go over that. When the Chief goes back to Reach after it gets glassed by the Covenant to save the remaining spartans, he discovers battle rifles. They are probably DMRs. The different factions of the UNSC often have different weapons, so maybe the battle rifles were originally introduced to the marines.

It also could just be a mistake.
