It's possible it wasn't going up but that it's a meteor travelling through the atmosphere at a fairly horizontal angle. The changes in direction can be from skipping on the atmosphere (like a stone skipping on water) and from pieces breaking off. Toward the end you see what looks like a mist as they final pieces of the meteor break up in the atmosphere like dust.
