I was blown when I heard this cover, with all due respect to Mr. Johnny Cash, I think this version is better. Chris should've totally won, him being duped so early was a fatal mistake, I stopped watching American Idol after he was dropped.

Actually, those of you who dislike Chris' version of this song and claimed he 'murdered' it, you should be informed that Chris was NOT covering Johnny Cash. He was covering LIVE's version of the Johnny Cash song, which in itself is awesome, and both Live and Daughtry kicked ass on it. Chris was not trying to be JC. He was Daughtry covering Live covering Cash.

i also find it interesting that the haters are acting like chris chose to do a cover of a johnny cash song. the fact is-it was a johnny cash week. All contestants that year did covers of various johnny cash songs. chris went the extra mile and found the LIVE version of it to sing. since it was more in his chandra of music. johnny would have been flattered.

@skoockum one-this is LIVE's version with an upgrade. chris does this version a hella lot better than LIVE does it. Chris started on the low E and went UP THE SCALE. the whole song was NOT in the e minor key. You need to learn music man!!!! Two-LIVEs version was not a scale version. they stayed right at the b flat key . chris version makes the song alot more interesting and shows his talent by hitting the scaling. bravo daughtry!!

there is a tradition on american idol, usually the winner ( as you just noted) disappears under a welter of offers and contracts and obscurity. The one everyone thinks SHOULD have won, goes on his or her own way, without being bogged down by controlling managers. Daughtry is still doing his own thing. As is Susan Boyle, his UK counterpart. If she had won, by now she would be Susan Who?

Yes, people. It's the Live cover. News Flash: American Idol contestants do not arrange the music themselves. All they get to do is pick a song from a list they're given, and the show picks which arrangement they do. The show decided he was doing the Live version, just like the show decided that David Cook was doing the Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean. It's a show where people sing karaoke.
