@17primemover yea I definitely agree, the song Flood by Tool at about 4:30 in, almost the exact same riff. but I also agree with @MusicIzTheAnswer that Steven Wilson is far too creative to rip someone off
Honestly, seeing bands pay homage to Tool in a way like this just assures Tool's influence to me. Its a great honor, showing that they have definitely left a very large mark on music. Look at all the bands that pay tribute to Led Zeplin or Pink Floyd by doing what Porcupine Tree has done.
depends on their intentions if they are trying to be original and it sounds similar than Tool than big deal. i am sick of lawsuits and accusations making artists afraid to be creative. there are only so many chords and notes to play
@MrsChadam Care because it's a ripoff. I'd be more inclined to have respect for this group if they came up with their own, not 'borrowed' almost note for note from someone else.
Monster Drummer, great Job Gavin. We both had mothers that would let us play all day, loud and just say "sounded good" parent's children great thing can happen.
man i agree the riff is a lot similar to tool's song but dont forget it isnt the main riff that makes the whole song..what about the drums the vocals the lyrics?..
A recording does exist, and also appears on their Arriving Somewhere... DVD/CD, but I don't know if there's a studio recording of the song (maybe that's the version in the Deadwing LP, I don't know).
wait, no recording of this song exists? lol I know I have a live recording from arriving somewhere... I'm just now really dissecting Porcupine Tree. First song I heard was Radioactive Toy, then Start of Something Beautiful... and it just progressed from there, I've been an addict ever since. In Absentia is my fav but I like ANYTHING Steven Wilson has even been a part of. Everything he touches is gold. I'm seriously in love.
2:04 , gavin has bed head... love this song.

Steven is usually the one making me melt, but Gavin is so damn amazing and a hell of a MAN!

porcupine tree have been going on longer than tool anyway, i also doubt someone as talented as steven wilson would purposefully rip another band off
MusicIzTheAnswer 1 month ago
Some parts of this song sound like Tool...but with about 20 times more talent.

@Kezia04 I agree with the "Flood"-like riff. Although Flood is in 13/8, and I believe this is 7/8. Either way, both excellent songs.

Yes, the riff is very similar, but Porcupine tree are about as far from rip off artists as it gets!

Fucking hell - intro to this song is a Tool ripoff. 'Flood' by Tool, at 4 minutes in, is the original to this riff.

I would've guessed the riff was a rip off of Tool's "Part of Me," but that works too...
