Can someone please describe why the accents are bad? I am from USA- standard west coast accent, and I thought these accents were OK, but I heard that they are not good. And, how hard would it be for USA actors to learn a good Scottish accent?
@ThusSpakeDenise I have a few hundred Van Johnson clips on The Van Johnson Project and the link to signing a petition for a Van Johnson postage stamp. It is our hope for are recognition and a revival of his work...
QUESTION: You can get shoes that give a sort of a tap sound when you walk around in them.
what are these s hoes called? and where can one g et t hem? what should I ask for? Are these special shoes? can i not get an "ordinary" pair of them at a regular shop price? Obviously, you wouldn't wear tap-dance-shoes if you are out climbing mount everest. But do fill me in , please. THANKS VERY MUCH. DECEMBER-21-2011.
When I'm having a bad day I pull up this tune. Born the year Brigadoon was premiered on stage, my parents (Charlie and Jean), chose to name me Bonnie Jeanne. Growing up listening to very nerd bagpipes in the house I hated it.....Dad became a Celtic dancer, was buried in his kilt... I love this musical more than ever now. Aye laddies!
I hate when people pick apart a movie. Or in this case a musical. ha ha Just take it at face value and enjoy the singing and dancing. If you're going to pick apart a musical, 7 Brides for 7 Bros is really about a bunch of hillbilly male chauvinist pigs. LOL But that doesn't stop me from watching it and loving it! :)
@momcubed76 No. They were not!!! They were men who longed for a woman. They simply did not possess urban social skills to woo a Townie gal. If you recall - at the end of the movie - NONE of the women wanted to leave.
SPOILERS -- I love this musical, but it is a story where you have to ignore a massive fundamental problem -- the villagers don't appear to have been allowed to choose whether they wanted to be trapped forever in Brigadoon. And why should one person leaving destroy the miracle for everyone? Because that creates the threat at the end, I know, but it would have been more fair to just bar such a person from ever returning.
The one bright spot in an otherwise dismal movie. At its core this is a deeply pessimistic tale (Kelly's character commits a kind of suicide at the end), and I can understand why the more uplifting "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" trounced it as the most popular musical movie of the year.
Plus, I couldn't help but calculate that if the youngest resident (@ 7 years old) of that "charming" Scottish village lived a full life of 70 years, he'd be reappearing in roughly the year 2,299,552 AD.
Could someone answer a question for me? When filming a musical such as this, I know that they record the music in the studio and do a playback on set, but do they do just the music or the singing too, for the same reason?
A lovely, lovely, lovely tune, a bit of a Scottish Riverdance almost! But who was the main singer? Was he Scottish or American or What? A good voice but not as good as that of Kenneth McKellar.
@squirell1952 Jimmy Thompson, and he's American. He did a lovely version of 'Come to me, Bend to me,' the score's best song, which was mystifyingly cut from the film.
So This little village wakes up one day every 100 years Thy sleep like Sleeping Beauty They get one day to shit, shower and shave, eat, drink ,fuck, pay there bills Go home with Bonny Jean see you next century
@Rollman1 to the "brigadooners" its just like any other normal day, they dont feel its been 100 years just a normal day, but to the rest of the world its been a century
@dailyrandomdrama These people, makng these idiotic comments, aobut how awful ti would be - they're mental. And kind of sad. Look around the world, today. I know it's a musical, and a fable - but the villagers are happy, they obviously have a great time, and they live in a very tight-knit community. The Harry character didn't try to run cause he was bored - he loved the gal so much he could not bear to see her marry another. Brigadoon seems like Heaven.
Look how light Van Johnson moves! He keeps up with Kelly and looks like he's having fun doing it. Kay Kendall did that, too, in "Les Girls." Now, if only I could stomach the rest of this show.

A story Van told was that they shot the movie in Cinemascope, and also in the normal Square screen; they did each take twice (Many theaters had yet to install the new huge screens). He finally said "hey, I'm making TWO movies here" and walked, demanding more money, which he got - and returned to finish the movie.
back you sad marchers, now we and you know where you'll march into the mists of time. So, get on the next banana boat back to...BRIGADOON- AFTER ALL THIS MARCHING to no where. It was and is Brigadoon the place you were looking for for all this time.

So, get on the next banana boat back to...BRIGADOON- AFTER ALL THIS MARCHING to no where. It was and is Brigadoon the place you were looking for for all this time.
In the 50's when this movie was filmed the :"modern" dancing was added to showcase the style of dancing the two stars were known for. Sadly, some of the best songs in the score were removed. Unfortunately, by the time this was made musicals were going out of style and the budget was very low. That's why it was done on a soundstage instead of on location. Still a great show!
I actually prefer the slower tempo of this song, in the movie, than the fast one in the stage version. Charlie's dubbing is very well done. I guess the guy with the plastic keg is the "stooge" for comic effect; there's always a stooge somewhere...
Such a lot of criticism of one of my favorite movies. I love Gene Kelly and thought the dancing was excellent. Van could dance and Gene could sing! Loved the song and the cast in period costumes,
best line "we have witches in NY, we don't call them that".. Van shows he could dance, and Gene that he couldna' sing!! (by the way I think that most of the dancers from the London ballet?) like this music, for what it is, not how accurate..you know, like Braveheart!!! lol
Gene Kelly is my favorite! This is the first movie I saw with him. Always my favorite. Cyd Charrise is beautiful!!!! Thanks for posting. Proud Gene Kelly is from Pittsburgh!
The fake scottish accent rather sounds like some polish people speaking english, the non-stop lasse/laddie mentions are nauseaus and the outfits are absolutely AWFUL, but: It is a great movie. It makes you laugh, you can sing along after the first chorus and have a blast pulling some Brigadoon-dance moves during a walk through the heather (Aye aye, the heatherrr, laddie!).
If you have seen even a half way decent production on the stage (and I include Community Theater) then you should be disappointed by this movie. The singing, except for Charlie with "Go Home With Bonnie Jeanne", seemed dubbed. The dancing was only mediocre. The original Agnes de Mille choreography is FAR superior to Kelly's efforts. And how in the name of all that is holy to musical theater could they possibly have omitted "Come To Me. Bend To Me"?(To say nothing of several other key moments)?
@secretsam215 In this clip the singing, except for Charlie with "Go Home with Bonnie Jean," was NOT dubbed. Charlie's song was dubbed by my good friend and wonderful tenor John Gustafson.
Oh lighten up ... this is a charming song and the singer has a terrific voice. See the movie, it's a very fictional "long ago and faraway" scotland. Musicals aren't about realism.
I have seen the movie, had to sit through the flaming thing as my gran, bless her, wanted to see it. I am well aware that musicals don't reflect real life but still regard this one as a nauseating mix of cheese and syrup.
My favorites are: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,Gone with the wind,Brigadoon,Carousel,West Side Story,Hans Christian Anderson,Oliver Twist,David Copperfield, and all the many Fairy Tale movies wth real people in them...NOT cartoons, such as Peter Pan,Briar Rose(Sleeping Beauty),Cinderella(w/Lesley Ann Warren),Snow White,Alice and Wonderland,Jack and the Beanstock, A Christmas Carol.Movies of the 50's and 60's were the best!
My favorite part is after Van Johnson fudges the note and he goes for it again with Gene Kelly. They look at each other like "hey, I/You've got it!" and shake hands.
Second favorite part is when they stop tapping because everyone is staring at them, but everyone wants them to keep going.
beg pardon, but, i think you mean Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The King and I is fabulous, with Yul Brenner, Holiday Inn, a few others, most of the musicals from the 30's 40's were great.
Singin' in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, An American in Paris, The Sound of Music, The Producers (the old version), Annie Get Your Gun and Kiss Me Kate
I love this movie....I had a week off work when I first saw it...the next day I packed a bag jumped in the car and without a map
headed to Scotland arrived in Glasgow
and then saw signs for Loch Lomand
arriving there just kept driving and found GlenCoe......My dream had come true and I was living the film I visit Fort William at least once a year but alas still have not found My Brigadoon...Thank you for posting.
@2writewuvonherarms Yes, he did... but only because Kelly was dancing down... waaaaay down. I'd like to see Mr Johnson attempt the 'Be A Clown' number from 'The Pirate.'
@2writewuvonherarms You are so right here, I love this movie, take nothing away from Kelly, but VJ, is flawless, and as you say, step for step, nice comment
@prideofclouds Van Johnson was a very very popular "light" comedic leading man, for years and years. He was a big handsome fellow. He's a bit of an SOB in this movie. His castng was very interesting, because he's playng aganst his own "type". As far as this role - it was a nice, subtle transition. He very gradually manuevered into all sorts of different types of roles. His dancing - yup - he keeps right up with Kelly. This was not a strenuous number, though.
@prideofclouds Cont'd - I wish Van Johnson's films would undergo a revival. Alas - he's bene somewhat forgotten. He was a very good, and a very subtle actor. There's usuall;y al ot more to his performances, than just the surface elements.
Ever seen "Singin' in the Rain"? Donald O'Connor is as good a dancer as Kelly. He wasn't as handsome and overlty masculine. He ws always the comic relief. I realized that he was really HOT, when he was young. He'd have a very different career, today.
Gene Kelly is awesome! You just don't see this type of dancing nowadays. I've taken tap and it takes forever to get the right sounds. People don't have that kind of paitence anymore.
My Mom saw this movie when she was a teenager, and when she came out of the cinema she said she was going to marry a Scotsman one day. My Mom's name was Jean, and she married my Dad who came from Edinburgh. And I was born there. So a bit of a special movie for me !
OMFG our english teacher is having our class watch this and she SINGS IT EVERY TIME!!! the next class we came in we had just gotten past this part but she made us watch again! then the dvd player started skipping so we watched this part like 5 freaking times! for the rest of the day i had this song stuck in my head!!!!!
wow, your so lucky - I would have loved watching this in class, we were stuck with shakespeare and the cruciable. Maybe she made the dvd skip on purpose(tee hee) she sounds like a great teacher! rock on MGM
And thats a bad thing, why? lol it's Gene KElly, it's a great song, it's scottish..It's overall fantastic...Whats wrong with having it stuck in your head?
Van Johnson is the second co-star of Gene's to leave us this week (Nina Foch from An American In Paris is the other.) Sorry to hear of their passings.
My school's musical this year is Brigadoon and I just found out today that I was cast as Charlie Dalrymple! I GET TO SING THIS SONG!!!! I'm SOOO excited!!!
Believe it or not this is my favorite movie....saw it on AMC one day when I stayed home from school. Never forgot it...its' message stayed with me ever since. Bought the CD! This is a great scene out of many great scenes in the movie. Van Johnson cracks me up. The best scene though is the last one in the movie with Gene Kelly going back to the bridge and meeting the old dude..."Tommy, my boy, if you love someone...ANYTHING is possible...even miracles" What a classic!!!
oo i rememeber this!!!!i used 2 dance and laugh weneever i saw this part!!!!i tried dancing wat they were dancing ad fell down a lot laughin.....but this was one of my fave numbers!!!
The one in the center always seemed particularly aware of the viewing audience at the close here, and I always found that a bit peculiar considering that this was performed for a camera. Somehow it seems understandable to briefly acknowledge an actual human audience but not one you've merely been filmed for. It's as if he wants me to applaud his gang's performance, but I know perfectly well they'll never hear me.
That is the LONDON Ballet that Gene and Van are dancing with. My Mom loved Van in this movie, and I was able to play his role in Austalia in 1996 "Brigadoon at Bundanoon" (they needed a Yank) What they did NOT know was that I knew every line of the movie!!! and Even though I could not dance that well, I loved the part!!!
man! i saw this when i was a kid in school more than 11 years ago, but this magnificent tune still hung on in my head.. can't believe its on youtube. thanks for the memories, fiftyground..
One of my favorite numbers in 'Brigadoon.' Thumbing a nose to all the cynics who always complain about spontaneous song-and-dance in musicals, I LOVE the natural way the dancing begins with Gene and Van- egged on by the locals- at 3:13. It's also one of the few times the cynical Van Johnson is really happy to be there. Thanks for this.
why can't someone not upload the whole film ,,,PLEASE !!!

forget gene kelly..van johnson was so underated and he kept up step for step
2writewuvonherarms 2 years ago 24
@2writewuvonherarms Yes, he did... but only because Kelly was dancing down... waaaaay down. I'd like to see Mr Johnson attempt the 'Be A Clown' number from 'The Pirate.'
JohnnyContagious 1 year ago
@2writewuvonherarms You are so right here, I love this movie, take nothing away from Kelly, but VJ, is flawless, and as you say, step for step, nice comment
redredreds100 1 year ago

@MrDarcysBride Yeah Gene Kelly is a champ but I do agree that van Johnson was also fantastic
prideofclouds 4 months ago
@prideofclouds Van Johnson was a very very popular "light" comedic leading man, for years and years. He was a big handsome fellow. He's a bit of an SOB in this movie. His castng was very interesting, because he's playng aganst his own "type". As far as this role - it was a nice, subtle transition. He very gradually manuevered into all sorts of different types of roles. His dancing - yup - he keeps right up with Kelly. This was not a strenuous number, though.
ThusSpakeDenise 2 months ago
@prideofclouds Cont'd - I wish Van Johnson's films would undergo a revival. Alas - he's bene somewhat forgotten. He was a very good, and a very subtle actor. There's usuall;y al ot more to his performances, than just the surface elements.
Ever seen "Singin' in the Rain"? Donald O'Connor is as good a dancer as Kelly. He wasn't as handsome and overlty masculine. He ws always the comic relief. I realized that he was really HOT, when he was young. He'd have a very different career, today.

I love the tap dancing!
Obistalker1 2 years ago
Gene Kelly is awesome! You just don't see this type of dancing nowadays. I've taken tap and it takes forever to get the right sounds. People don't have that kind of paitence anymore.

My Mom saw this movie when she was a teenager, and when she came out of the cinema she said she was going to marry a Scotsman one day. My Mom's name was Jean, and she married my Dad who came from Edinburgh. And I was born there. So a bit of a special movie for me !

Van Johnson is the second co-star of Gene's to leave us this week (Nina Foch from An American In Paris is the other.) Sorry to hear of their passings.

Rest in peace, Van Johnson. Dead this week at 92. This number is a classic.

Believe it or not this is my favorite movie....saw it on AMC one day when I stayed home from school. Never forgot it...its' message stayed with me ever since. Bought the CD! This is a great scene out of many great scenes in the movie. Van Johnson cracks me up. The best scene though is the last one in the movie with Gene Kelly going back to the bridge and meeting the old dude..."Tommy, my boy, if you love someone...ANYTHING is possible...even miracles" What a classic!!!

haha look at jene - kellys red socks :P
love him x
JessicaD6661 3 years ago
Gene Kelly always wore bright socks to call attention to his feet while dancing. Guess who picked up on that tip ... Michael Jackson.
skwrrl70 2 years ago 10
The bright socks perfectly match the pants pulled up to the armpits.
MrsMacKinney 2 years ago
@skwrrl70 actually Van Johnson is the one who usually wore red socks

oo i rememeber this!!!!i used 2 dance and laugh weneever i saw this part!!!!i tried dancing wat they were dancing ad fell down a lot laughin.....but this was one of my fave numbers!!!
mangaluva16 3 years ago
The one in the center always seemed particularly aware of the viewing audience at the close here, and I always found that a bit peculiar considering that this was performed for a camera. Somehow it seems understandable to briefly acknowledge an actual human audience but not one you've merely been filmed for. It's as if he wants me to applaud his gang's performance, but I know perfectly well they'll never hear me.
snapdrag0n7 3 years ago
That is the LONDON Ballet that Gene and Van are dancing with. My Mom loved Van in this movie, and I was able to play his role in Austalia in 1996 "Brigadoon at Bundanoon" (they needed a Yank) What they did NOT know was that I knew every line of the movie!!! and Even though I could not dance that well, I loved the part!!!

Gene Kelly and Van johnson dancing with the Best, I believe the London Ballet?
usmctanks1 3 years ago 2
One of my favorite numbers in 'Brigadoon.' Thumbing a nose to all the cynics who always complain about spontaneous song-and-dance in musicals, I LOVE the natural way the dancing begins with Gene and Van- egged on by the locals- at 3:13. It's also one of the few times the cynical Van Johnson is really happy to be there. Thanks for this.
