If the Westboro Baptist Church has a right to spread their message, then so do you, provided it's not a specific threat or something like that. However, just because you have the right to basically say whatever you want doesn't mean that your speech will be free of consequences.

@assman255 I have a gay friend who is a paramedic. Apparently, there are several other gay guys working there as well. One day, a new person was hired, and he made several homophobic jokes or statements on the job, not realizing that he had several gay co-workers. My friend said the boss, who he describes as being quite conservative, threatened to fire that guy if he made any jokes or statements like that again. While not criminal, the new guy's speech carried consequences.

this is just total bullshit, i have a right to freedom of speech and all i'm hearing from this bill is that if i make someone "different" angry he will say i insulted him and then i will go to jail, this is just a huge assload of bullshit. i know they get picked on, but why doesn't this bill include whites or christains? i know the democrats are all hippies but this is just too much. i just hope once congress sees what they have done, they will get rid of it.

Have you actually READ the text of HR 256 and 262? If you did you'd know that nowhere in the text does it read that speech is criminalized. Rather, it is a penalty enhancement meaning there has to be a crime to begin with and only then can you charge someone with a hate crime if a bias motive is found.

I'm glad you brought that up - was my next point but ran out of room - see, the law wouldn't stop an attacker. The law, police, whatever never stop actual crime 99% of the time, they're just there to clean up the mess & investigate what happened. My only other point is that I don't think people who commit crimes actually even consider the consequences. If they're going to do it, they're going to do it anyways. It might not stop the attacker, but he might think twice about it, if this law was in place... Even if it doesn't prevent anything, it still would teach a lesson.... And you know they aware of their motives of commiting the crime....Take Matthew Shepards muder. He way ONLY killed because he was gay. If Shepard's murders had never been taught somewhere a long the line to think in such a way, they and Shepard might all still have their lives in tact. They never or at least never seriouly bring up the violence part it's trying to address. The bill states nothing about "Calling a jew a jew" will get you put in jail or whatever that redneck was ranted about. It makes more strict sentences for people who commit hate crimes, and on top of that, they need to prove in court the attack was racially motive (or gender or sexual preference).
