Ironic how Webber talks about the public wanting new musicals because they're fed up of the revivals and old musicals, yet Les Mis had been running for 4 years at the time and it's in its 25th year non-stop as we speak haha.
Alex is a border-line physcopath in aspects of love...I've never seen the show but I've heared enough from the OLC recording to know that....sadly it's Lloyd Webber's worst score (and he's brillaint, it's just he fell on that musical) and plot, the character's around alex aren't any better
well I've heared the entire soundtrack and read the 'complete' libretto (which is virtually the soundtrack plus a few lines of dialouge) and Alex does fall in love with his 15 year old cousin (Jenny)..(granted she seems to be more in love with him) but it's just strange...Also he try's to kill Rose (not that I like Rose either) it's just none of the character's are sympathetic...
Like you, I don't find any of the characters particularly sympathetic.
However, while Alex fell in love with his cousin, he resisted the urge to act on that love. And he pointed a gun at Rose under emotional circumstances, and the gun went off after she threw something at him. I'm not defending him, but I don't feel that he would have *intentionally* pulled the trigger.
I guess you and I just have different ideas about the play, and different ideas of what constitutes a psycopath. :)
well ok I admit I was overly strong when I used the word "physcopath" ...But he's FAR from likeable...I think to be honnest the most interesting character is George (and yet he's not even likeable) but the most 'likeable' character is Marcel who is so under-wrriten that he might as well not be in the plot...
Look I love most of Lloyd Webber's stuff just this musical was a let down (though some of the tunes are fantastic in it).
We definitely agree on that. I think that may be one reason why it wasn't as commercially successful as the others - there weren't really any likeable characters. But you're right, some of the tunes were fantastic. :)
"I hate it when an artist as talented as Michael lip sincs , hes much better than that, maybe he had to save his voice for perfomances though"
Don't forget this was one if not the first appearence Michael made he'd of done what he was told to do. Wogan was live I think and quite often back then (even now) live shows do this to cut the risks of technical hold ups causing the show to over run. Although anyone who saw Gene Pitney on 'This Morning'will know this doesn't always work :0)
I remember watching that in 1989 and it gave me goose bumps then. Now seeing it so many years later - same reaction! He has such a magnificent voice and he's such a genuine guy. Thanks for posting this
Love Michael, Love this song - he's the best! Thanks Mimi. There was a video of him singing this song for ALW's tribute at Royal Albert Hall. If anyone has it pls pls pls post again.
Goodness, he's so young here! That voice! He's a legend.

No offense but Alex a "border-line psycopath"? Perhaps you should hear the entire recording, and not just "enough". :)
You may not find the character particularly sympathetic, but psychopath is going a bit too far. :)

Why do they say he is lip-synching? Watch his throat vibrate. Would they have him lip-synch w/ a live orchestra? He is so so talented.

Ironic that Lloyd Webber says that we've had 'too many revivals.'

when was this and the martin guerre one when was this on televison
rainbowspotter 5 years ago
This was the beginning of 1989, the show opened in April of that year. Martin Guerre opened in 1996 and I think the clip is from 1996 too.

Picture is a bit distorted, look at Michael's wide shoulders! Still, at least it's in sync this time.
mimibarthez 5 years ago
LOL WIDE !!!shoulder pads were all the rage in the 80s, and it seems Michael was a victim of them in this case
