The French Open gets one of these matches every year and this was the one of this year. It's just one where you follow and cheer on the underdog in a great match and the lesser ranked player wins in the end! I remember the headlines and thinking 'go Kimiko, that's a good one to remember!' watching her play is so much fun!
Kimiko has beaten two formal No.1 players, Safina and Sharapova, since she came back from a long retirement, and almost dethroned Venus Williams in Wimbledom this year. Amazing!!!
i love Granny Krumm...I was laughing so hard when she beat girls young enough to be her child. It is hilarious. Granny has a very unique game and I don't where in the hell she gets her power from but she be getting it in.
Safina has a spine injury. Despite of that, I don't want to take away from Kimiko's win because she is an inspiration to people who think they're too old to achieve anything significant not just for tennis players.
Kimiko is an inspiration...at the her age she could still beat seeded players who are way younger and hit harder than her...i don't even remember narvatilova beating younger modern tennis players at 40 !
15.10.2010 - Kimiko made history, becoming the first 40-something in WTA Tour history to beat a Top 10 player, stunning world nr 8 Stosur in QF of Osaka 57 63 76(4).
16.10.2010 - Kimiko moves into the F after beating Peer 36 76 75, in the final Date Krumm will try to become the first 40-something ever to win a title. Go Kimiko!
@wanameetyou A commentator, at Coomonwealth Championships in Bali, just mentioned that Pat Rafter was forced to be right-handed as everybody was. Some people live with stereotypes as you do.
Dinara Safina....a greatest legendary stupid of all time...the 2nd one is a tie between dementieva and jelena jankovic...3rd spot goes to ana ivanovic...4th goes to angesia radwanska...5th victoria azarenka
i wonder how many return winner did date get???? DATE win win win!!!!!! more matches , more ranking points , higher the ranking luv to see her ranked in the top 40 or maybe top 30 okay im just pushing it

Safina what happened to her I think the media contsantly attacking her really has worn down her confidence I think she is going to go ANa on us but she didnt win the FRench OPen!
I'm torn between feeling sorry for Safina and being totally annoyed. If I was Date Krumm I would have walked across the court and whacked Safina with my racket after all of her whining and screaming.
apparently kimiko's a natural lefty, who has to play right-handed because of her japanese culture. shame, cuz she used to be world number 4, she could've been a legend at the sport, if she could play left handed.
Wow respect for Kimiko. I mean she's one of the oldest players out there and could still win a match against seeded players. Congrats. DInara needs a lot of mental coaching now
Kimiko Date-Krumm kept asking the questions in the match, she never went away, kept plugging in her own style, and sometimes that is enough to win matches. It was fun to watch for the drama and the scrap, I was glued to it at the time.

It's a joke these young girls can not beat a granny Date.
Who said women's tennis evolves and improves in these years?
Actually women's tennis deteriorates in these years.

If Dinara Safina is going to win a Grand Slam her 1st will be at the French Open.

Imagine if Kimiko could win a grand slam at her age. That would be amazing.

I personally think, it was the toughest Slam loss for Safina.

i really think Kimiko might have won a Grand Slam if they didn't force her to play right-handed. Sucks to belong to such a strict culture!

You know, at the time, this was a SHOCKING loss for Safina. Everyone was like, how can anyone ranked that high lose to someone that old?
But it isn't so shocking. Date was once #4 in the world and just beat Sharapova.
It wasn't a loss Safina can be ashamed of.

Kimiko is soooooo cute! And also she's a miracle! She's 40 and plays like this! That's like dream come true!

Kimiko is such a great player. At 39 she's still getting many good wins. She beat Sharapova today in Tokyo 7-5 3-6 6-3.
