Man, hearing this song and pretty much every other song in his Songbook box set remind me of being 5 years old when my dad was stationed at Ford Dix, NJ being on a road trip riding in the back of the minivan up to NY to visit family. Nostalgia.
Thank you so very much for posting this. My "Endless Wire" album was sold accidentally some years ago and I've hated not having access to this version (in my opinion, his best). You've made this old blonde chic so happy!
Gordon amazed me. One man expressing himself with poetry and song in the most natural and healthy way kind of like John Dowland did five hundred years ago only better. Sorry John Dowland. Gord wrote his own poetry.
I have to agree with the other poster's this is the best version I have seen on YouTube! Bought the album when it came out back in the 70's and it still plays as if it were fresh out of the sleeve! Love it!!!!!!
Mid January.....1978. Went to Vegas from St. Paul, Minnesota to meet my Lovely lady, whom was a grade school teacher. Got there and bought this album of Gord's. Fell in love with it but for some reason, never got back together with my Lady from Vegas. But discovered tis album and still play the CD version when possible
He did many versions of this song. This one is NOT the best 1978 version which is VERY hard to find, but it is so close it is damn good. I don't think many folks recall the best version. Young people do not follow this kind of music anymore.
This is the version I recall hearing in 1978 and is superior to the original version. It's actually my favourite Lightfoot song. For me, it recalls a simpler period in my life, when I had far less money than I do now and relatively few material possessions.
I remember this song from college. The memories it brings back are priceless. Definitely the definitive version. Thank you so much for posting this video. It's a very emotional song to listen to.
It's difficult to pick a favorite Gordon Lightfoot song: they are all so good. But this one is, in my opinion, one of his very best. This version of the song from the "Endless Wire" album is my favorite too. I love the strings instrumentation and the bassoon playing the bass line sounds great. Unfortunately, though, as many times as I have gone to see GL in concert, I have never seen him perform this song.
I much prefer this version to the older one; it reflects how Gordon's musical talent evolved. Not only that, though, it also reminds me of a special someone... long, long ago.

I had nearly forgot this song...the memories came flooding back though, it's amazing for me to hear it again; he captures our feelings in his music...thank you!!!
Pure pop perfection

Absolutely love this song and this version of it. Takes me back to my college days and I found the so called love of my life was cheating on me.

Much better than earlier versions as he slowed it down a bit, painful for me but beautiful.
