Huge U2 fan....still am.... This though is my favorite album.....something about it.... so transcendent..... so moody. I love moody U2. Hope they do another passengers album
Let us celebrate 4th of July on December 31st for once. This is baller 365 days a year as is New Year's Day but don't tell that to those posers who love U2 once a year, heh
I like this because Brian Eno and the Edge just whipped it up in the studio, just playing off each other.. the rest is history. Zooropa still way under appreciated. Edge was genius ,
I have listen to u2 for years now ( I am 40) my favorite band in high school. All the post that u2's new music is not as good ....No Line On The Horizon moment of surrender is one of the greatest songs that they have put out I still listen to them a lot how ever I do listen to Royal Wade Kimes too check out his music it is hard to find but great music
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the 4th of july to like VJ day to some Jap singer Bono is not American he hates us get in in your head ....most all his money comes from us .....but he hates us .......he is a communist in thought ....but a capitolist when it comes to making money off us stop buying U2 cds America!!
joshua tree and unforgettable fire are great albums as are achtung baby (their best imo) and zooropa (2nd best)... the mark of a great band is one that can evolve their sound..
...music for people who find solace in near-barren and cold places, like fields of blueish snow at night with speckles of astral light overhead..with no rhythm to speak of,no blues or jazz influence...music perfectly suited for sensitive fair skinned people.
@MARMARR1 Kind of. To me, zooropa seemed like a natural extension from Achtung Baby, as far as experimentation with different, more electronic sounds goes. After that, though, I agree that U2 has become a very different beast. But I still like them.
this album and joshua tree are great no doubt as are achtung baby (their best imo) and zooropa (2nd best and really was extension of achtung album)... great bands show their ability to evolve their sound..
This song has the genius of Brian Eno to thank...He was sitting at the desk 'twiddling knobs' while Edge and Adam where doing this during a 'break' from recording. It wasn't meant to go on the finished album, but when Bono heard it, he insisted it was included. Good Call!
@extreme67 I get that you really like this song, and its cool that you're passionate about it. But spamming it is just going to make people resent you.
@lundehund44 Heh I know what you mean. The main point though was that TUF tends to be a somewhat 'forgotten' album. Perhaps it was the timing (1984), an experimental album at a time when everybody was wearing flourescent colours and listening to well... crap... TUF, apart from 'Pride' and Michael Mann using 'Wire' in an episode of Miami Vice always seemed to fly under the radar a bit and so gets overlooked even though it's a sonic achievement that any band would be justifiably proud of.
Bono has made some stupid public moves over the years, but I've never heard an U2 album I didn't like. I enjoyed their experimental albums as much as the classic rock stuff.
I just didnt want to get attacked by die hard fans U2 fans.... I still like U2 too, but just thought that the genuine earnest nature of the band ended with Joshua Tree. Cheers
do you mean to say you're NOT the only one? Because a lot of people share your opinion. I personally don't think U2 is as good as they used to be, but i still like them.
@flippyflyer - I think I agree with you guys. There early work was just so passionate and frenetic. Unforgettable fire was the first departure as the band "matured," and lost their punk roots. But somehow, the music lost its edge. No pun intended.
You're not the only one, I adored them before The Joshua Tree, but I wasn't that fond of ''Tree' - and then thats it for me as well ... War and The Unforgettable Fire are totally marvellous though!
this is very beautiful, it is both beautiful but haunting and i love that, like navaho music with that bass. check out tel aviv and tiger tiger by duran duran and tell me what you think. could anyone include the edge solo at end of shadows and tall trees on the LP it is not included on the CD.
i listened to them, and i liked both of the songs. Thanks for the recommendation. I wasn't really familiar with Duran duran before I heard those songs.
I love this track, can just listen to it over and over - Never get bored - Apparantly it came about just by a bit of messing about in the studio with Edge, Adam and Eno. It wasn't meant to go on the album but Bono insisted it was included. Well Done Bono!

May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.

Rolling Stone thinks The Joshua Tree & Achtung Baby deserve their places in the top 100 greatest albums of all time.
But without the magnificent edifice of sound that is The Unforgettable Fire, there would be no Joshua Tree, no Achtung Baby...
