This was BRILLIANT and funny and clever. You guys sound wonderful together. Beautiful voices! I wish you would do this again with better sound quality, the lyrics where hard to catch. But so great.
I just put up a song andwondered if I could find anything like it. This is great, acctually made me happier by the end. I never realized until I searched for "agnostic song" just how messed up I must really be. My song is quite depressing comparatively.
@Century21digitalBoi Just wait till you wake up at 4 in the morning and find me at the foot of your bed staring at you...and counting your toes...THERE SEEM TO BE A FEW MISSING.... Muahahahahahahahahahaha
You should write a comedy album. Even if you weren't signed and just recorded a set of 14 songs on to a blank CD with sharpie labels, I would buy one. : )
Didn't know this conversation had been going on for two years --- just read it for the first time. I feel positively subversive!
Thanks to all of you for your compliments about the song...Also: Thanks to Ray Wiley Hubbard, from whom I stole the original premise (he used to do a comedy bit where he talked about "songs that are impossible to write"...an "agnostic gospel song" being one of the examples he cited). Thanks also to Henny Youngman from whom I stole the joke at the end of the song.
You're an agnostic atheist, not an agnostic. Eventually, the word "agnostic" becomes irrelevant, considering Gnostic Atheists claim "There cannot be a God," and that just isn't true.
Pure agnosticism is another word for apathy. It kind of doesn't exist.
Actually, we're two singers doing a cover version of somebody else's song, which you'd know if you read the "More Info" box. But even those who sing their own compositions do not always convey truth in their lyrics. It might surprise you to learn, for example, that Johnny Cash did not really kill a man in Reno just to watch him die. Using ignorance to enlighten is the ultimate path to irrelevancy.
Was the belittling tone necessary to convey that you don't personally believe in the song you covered, because I didn't think that's an ignorant assumption to make at all. If I uploaded myself singing an old gospel tune, I think quite a few people would make the assumption that I'm religious. How stupid would they be though, right?
I assumed you believe the lyrics to a song you covered and iterated a point about agnosticism that I feel passionately about. You assumed I didn't know it was a cover, so you proceeded to call me names.
(Sorry if you felt attacked or I offended you, not my intentions.)
Did I miss anything, or is your knee-jerk reaction to all online correspondence overbearing arrogance?
I was going to leave this, but you're an adult. "We don't identify as agnostics" would've been fine.
You can't possibly know that there isn't a god. There is no proof of such, and it's scientifically devoid to make that claim, similar to Christians. It's perfectly valid to claim that none of mankind's images of God are accurate, or that the hypothetical possibility of a God-like being is unlikely, but to completely rule out any such chance is patently arrogant. I consistently mention that the day we discover a god-like being, people will try to say atheists were wrong, instead of accurate.
The song was written by Andy Corwin and yes, it's a great song. Andy's version is up on YouTube now, too, so you can check it out. (And, btw, I've got nothing against Christians.) Thanks for your nice comment!
Either live or this one would work.If you would make an mp3 version i would be very greatful.I just think you work is amazing and would like to listen to it when i workout or go for a jog.
You can download an MP3 of Andy Corwin's version at Amazon. (Andy Corwin is the guy who wrote the song.) You can also find a YouTube video of Andy performing the song live with his partner Steve Goodie at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
I'm flattered that you like Brett's and my version! Thanks for the compliment! We had fun doing it.
Well is his version as good as yours and brett's?If so i will defeintley be downloading his song. Thanks for pointing me in the right driecition. You and Brett keep up the good work.
Well, if you're wondering if you'll like Andy's version, you can sample about 30 seconds of his version on Amazon before deciding whether to buy the MP3. (It's only 99 cents. And you'll be supporting the songwriter, which is always a good thing to do.)
Thanks for the encouragement. Brett and I should do more recording. (It's just a matter of finding the time.)
We could debate forever about "god" and still we not know for sure and we would have wasted our lives. So let us look at what we do know. Firstly we have life and life is precious. Secondly one day we will die. So I have a question for you. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE DAYS YOU HAVE LEFT? Send me a reply
I love this song! My church choir sang this today during a sermon titled "The Courage to say 'I Don't Know'." on Agnosticism. I googled it as soon as I got home. :)
Thanks for putting this song together. I am currently starting each morning with listening to it and then singing it throughout the day. Just makes my day go a little better. Not to mention after I showed it to my wife the other day I was actually able to get her into a discussion about Schrodinger's cat, a Schrodingers cat definite step forward. Thanks
Putting religion and debates about god to one side I have a question for you. Right now you have life. Life is precious. One day you will die. So the question is what are you going to do with the days you have left? Send me a reply?
The lyrics are on Steve Goodie's website. YouTube won't let me put the URL in a comment, but you can find it by Googling "steve goodie" "but you won't find me on board" -- and then scroll down to "An Agnostic Gospel Song." Hope that helps!
Agnostics aren't sure, which means they lack faith, which means they're atheists. "Agnostic" is simply a term that gives cover to those who aren't comfortable acknowledging their lack of faith. The proper term for such people is negative atheist. Claiming you "know" there isn't a god is just as silly as claiming you "know" there is one. Jesus is not religious nor is he a Christian. The only agenda of Satan is to keep you from reading The Bible under your own influence. Science and Religious dogma alike are used to keep you from searching for The Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Satan hides it well.
Whether you are an atheist agnostic or theist, I think that the ultimate wisdom is that nothing is really "ours", and that everything is subject to change, at any time.
For a sequel you could pander to us squishy folks who can't quite choose between atheism and theism and end up as deists. And if you could throw Spinoza in there somewhere that would be really cool. Write on, kids!
Ah that would explain why you guys did not eat a live baby then. :P btw I dont say there is defaintly no god either, just do to what I feel is a lack of evidence I lean so far to the no god side to say I am not an atheist feels like a lie. All it is, is a lack of belief. Is Brett your husband? I wish my gf and I would do stuff like that! So awesome that you play the guitar as well.
Brett and I are just good friends who met through a Randy Newman internet discussion group. That was fucking awesome, you two rule! Talented atheists who managed to not kill rape and or eat a baby during the taping, hopefully some Christians see this and realize that people like us do exist. And hey, we are not so bad. Who would have guessed?
Thanks for the nice compliments and the nice rating! Just to clarify, I don't consider myself an atheist, but an agnostic. (Far be it from me to say with certainty whether there's a God or not.) Brett and I just did the song for fun. Please note that the clever song was written by Andy Corwin, a very talented musician who is currently in the Limeliters. He recorded this song with his music/comedy duo called "actual size," and it's on their CD called "Measuring Up."
Actually, it isn't necessary to be "100%" certain, that's just one of the misconceptions about atheism. You need only to lack a belief in a god, whether it's 'cause you're waiting for evidence(implicit/agnostic atheism) or...
