These illusions were not created to be put on slow motion, stopped and scrutinized, and examined at 200 magnification.
Henning was a master of illusion. He never tried to make you believe it was "real". His tag line was "in the world of magic, everything is an illusion"
Unlike modern illusionists, he let you know it was all in fun.
The idea of her having a twin is idiotic. That safe had been hanging there THE ENTIRE SHOW. If anyone was in there, they would have suffocated long before then.
I was in the audience at this taping. It was at the Ed Sullivan Theater y in NYC. It took 13 takes because the mirror piece kept getting caught on a latch. A man ran out of the audience and screamed!! He was immediately arrested. Ricky Jay to saved the day and did a ard revelation. While they reset the million dollar trick..Two Masters In One Afternoon!!!!!!!
This is P.T. Selbit's Million Dollar Illusion. That's the only hint I'm giving. So, if don't know how Selbit did his illusion, then you won't know this one.
If memory serves, Ms. Morris was the original femme fatale of "The Magic Show." Unfortunately, I think she, too, has gone on to the Great Retirement Home-In-The-Sky, long since.
Seeing this as an adult shows me how gullible I was back then. I love how he says that you'll be able to see underneath the box the whole time, and then almost immediately after, he just happens to cover the legs with the cheque, while his assistant stays behind him. Classic...magicians almost always do, exactly what they say they won't. Misdirection! If they're good, you enjoy it anyway. For the nostalgia alone, Doug Henning is awesome. But if I had 1st seen him as an adult, not so much.
You're right. The lines between the wall and carpet don't line up correctly underneath the plexiglass box. It was most likely a set of painted walls made to look like the background. You'll notice the cameras never show the underside of the box except head on, even then you can see the faulty perspective.
Exactly! 1st rule of magic: Don't believe what the magician tells you. He will do exactly what he says he won't. 2: Look for any stage props that shouldn't be necessary to perform the trick. If DH was really burning money, he wouldn't need to hide it from view at any point. 3: If the magician tries to focus your attention to a particular area, that's not where the trick is performed - it's probably already happened. 4: Occam's Razor. The trick is probably done using the easiest possible method.
@belleamie What the hell is your point? It's not like you're a hero saving people from the dangers of magic illusions. Everybody in their right mind knows it's a trick. People that like to point out magic's secrets are really irritating.
Go debunk the real dangers, like superstitions (such as religion) and ghosts and psychics.
I agree. Using twins isn't a good idea if your assistant is famous. However, using twins is an easy way to perform a teleportation trick, if the participants are unknown. I know of a case in which another magician performed 2 teleportations on his TV show - one in a hallway & another in an elevator - using twins. It's a pet peeve of mine when people attribute illusions to supernatural powers. I'm glad people here are looking for a natural explanation for the illusion. And there is one.
Many famous people do have a twin that nobody really knows about. Three quick examples: Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor in the Terminator movies), Conrad Bain (Mr Drummond on Diff'rent Strokes), Jerry Hall (model once married to Mick Jagger).
A quick search on Wikipedia made it easy to verify that each of those people you mentioned have twins. In the days before wiki, celebrities could keep their lives private. But now, because of access to info through the internet, we'd be able to suss out a twin very easily. BTW, I already knew about Linda's twin, because she was featured in T2. In this case, using a twin isn't the best way to perform this trick. Especially, if you have a trap door handy. LOL!
Correct. She disappears under the money via a trap-door, and enters the safe from below once it's on the stage via another trap-door. You can even see the guy on the left adjust the safe into the correct position.
Oh wow. That's a pretty good double.

pause it at 2:18 and look under the table. that backround doesn't match up. it's a cardboard front, in front of the table.
