@AndreasStefanOlsson - I not sure if you're saying that *I* said it wasn't well-tuned, when you say ....** if you say so...** It may be it wasn't tuned right before this "take" since - as I said in my comments - this was only a "rehearsal" to get comfortable playing in front of the web-cam & wasn't meant to be uploaded. But it turned out better than the well-tuned *real* takes after it, so it was used. *I* didn't say it wasn't well-tuned before, but now I'll say I'm sorry it's not well-tuned!
Thank you my friends! My love and heartfelt appreciation to you all!! Your comments make all the OTHER stuff that I have to go through to do this worth it. :) Music is so bittersweet - from pain comes beauty, and beauty can often lead to pain.. That is life! And thus I believe there truly are tears in heaven, for us who have not yet made that voyage to the place where the is no more tears or suffering.
So many thanks!!! I really really appreciate the time each of you has taken to write SO MUCH AND SO KINDLY - and will do my best to get to all your sites as well.
@BENIBANEZ Thank you very much!! And also thanks to the posters below (JaguarStupid, joyspinjodian, davidiiao623 - and any others I missed) for all your most kind comments too! I'm a behind online, so it's nothing personal, just me not keeping up with those things I should be keeping up with! And that goes for the private comments on my channel as well - I will get to them. I'm sorry!
@exhibitcraft Thanks!! I really don't know how I'd do that, as I didn't learn it, or play it, from any one particular set of tabs or music score. I looked and tried out a bunch of them and took the best of each, and added in my own ways of doing some parts that I couldn't find written down well. One hint - it's all in knowing the chords it's based on, go from that as step one and listen to EC over and over :) and you'll know you've got it when it feels RIGHT to YOU.Sorry I can't do more ...
@Reap0xide I wish I could... but there is no one set of tabs I used to learn this. I needed to learn it & on the web found LOTS of different people's tabbed interpretations of it, none of which I felt was IT. But after playing through it MANY ways, I started finding bits I did like & eventually I "got it". Once I was sure of the chords & inversions to use, the rest was based on those and listening to & watching Clapton, and filling in the spaces until it sounded right to me. I never tabbed it.
@JamesSig Wow, good job mate! But it's pretty hard because when i search tabs they're all for acoustic guitars, and i don't like how they play it there..
@Reap0xide Hey again my friend! Well, ALL the tabs for this song are "generic"- assuming you're using an acoustic instrument (and Clapton actually used nylon strings when he first played it - as on a classical guitar) so making the switch to using an electric doesn't as much mean different tabs or necessarily using different strings or frets for different chord inversions, etc - but getting the tone, and thus the FEELING right for how YOU want to interpret EC's song and get it aross to others!
Wow...you're an amazing guitar player. I play bass and drums I own a Fender Electric guitar but it's in pretty rough shape. I might fix it up one day. Great cover!
@Ogizzie Ogizzie - Thanks so much! But if you can play bass and drums, and own an electric guitar, then you're way ahead of most people and I'll bet you're not at all in as much rough shape as you think. You MUST fix it up - and ASAP and PLAY!!! You'll never be sorry! Thank you again!
@stringstruggle Thank you SO very very much!! I see Twitter is now integrated on my computer here at YouTube so this is going further than usual. 1st time this has happened.! Twitter is a powerful tool for communications But I can enter more characters in YouTube than in Twitter so I wonder how it will handle this post... we'll see I guess..
Again, my appreciations for your kind comments and I really do love it when I feel I've reached other people in a positive way through music. :)
I've been playing for 42 years. Which, to me, means I should be way better than I am, but I do the best I can and have fun! And that's the key -- HAVE FUN and mix fun with work when you're learning, and that way you'll stick with it and enjoy it all along! Yes, it does take a while to get to where you feel like you're comfortable with your playing. And when YOU get to 42 years - you'll be WAY better than I've been able to get. Just don't give up - and ENJOY!!!
can u tell me the tabs u did at 0.19-0.23 secs and also at 0.38-0.40 secs??? thanks alot..been trying to find out how to do that but i can't as im still a beginner..thanks
The first - play 2nd to 4th frets on the 3rd (G) string then play 2nd fret on 2nd (B) string, do a pull-off and hammer-on on same string to the 3rd fret and hammer-on back to 2nd fret (quickly for a trill), then play 4th to 2nd frets on 3rd (G) string. Next one is double stop on the 1st and 2nd (E/B) strings, on the 5th fret to 7th fret back to 5th fret and then do another double stop on E/B open to 2nd fret on same 2 strings then back to E/B open to just 2nd fret on the 2nd string to finish.
Just normal picking on the 2nd to 4th fret, and the same (normal picking) at the end of that first "lick" where you go in reverse from the 4th down to the 2nd fret. At least that's how I did it -- you could try sliding - or whatever you wanted to - and see how it sounds! A lot of the stuff in there I made up as I was going along - so experiment and see what sounds good to you!
Thanks! You can learn to play this - you just need determination and practice, and the information is out there ... if you look hard enough and use all the resources available, I'm sure you'll find what you need, and the rest is up to you (AKA determination and practice!)
Thanks and I plan to! I'm learning more of EC's works - both full songs like this one and also decent improvisational solos to some of the songs he soloed to that I like best - and also I have some audio-only recordings I've already made that I need to make some sort of visual movie to go with them so they can be videos that I can upload here.
Thanks so much! I hope you love playing this song - it's just a wonderful creation that is so fulfilling to attempt to recreate filled with your own personal emotions and style.
Thanks - I really appreciate the support! I hope I can post more of this type of music. I wish I could post more quickly but I can't take any song and try to force an electric guitar instrumental out of it, when it wasn't written that way, This version came about because of a real need to support the family, and that made a BIG difference, It's a really sensitive, emotional song and there is a feeling of airing your deepest private feelings in public, which can be a scary thing to do..
hey Jim i just want to let u know that this cover is really!!! great and its easy to learn for other guitar players cause your cam is in a great position:)
thank you so much for posting u r a great player !! go on like this
thanks toxicity!! I'm glad you were able to learn to play this beautiful song by Eric Clapton (but so sad too) by watching my video. I'm not trying to hide any secrets of how to play it - the more people that can play this great song well the better, IMHO!! I replaced the old PC webcam with a MacBook Pro with a built in video camera and also an IPhone 3GS that records great video and uploads straight to here, and I hope that will help me make even better - and more - videos for this page!
One BIG hint, is that if you think of it more according to what chord you're currently playing, you'll find that what looks like strange and difficult fingerings are really just slightly different voicings and often barre varieties of chords you're probably already familiar with! So, as long as you can remember the chord progression, the rest kind of falls into place - because until I looked at it harmonically- as chords, it did seem a daunting task to get right. Give that a try :)
Thank you! The neck Is thinner on an electric - but you get used to it over time and then it doesn't make a whole lot of difference, at least if your fingers are relatively thin (which mine are). But plenty of people with fingers that are not thin at all play fantastic stuff on electric, so it's more a matter of will and practice and eventually it doesn't make as much difference as it appears it might.
But - still thanks so much for the kind comments - I really appreciate them!
Pay some respect im sure this man has had some horrible losses for all you now the music is beautiful dude keep it up if i were to consider a guitarist if i had a band you'd be first 5 stars
fuck you old man. music isn't to get over people you've lost, but to gain relation and a passion for music is the most wonderful one can have. go fuck your guitar amp
Music is for whatever you want it to be for. To bad you can't understand that - it's your loss not to know that and I hope you can get over that some day.
you should put up a tutorial on how to play the song like that, it sounds awesome on an electric guitar, thats what i have and it dont soudn the same when i do it lol. well done !
Thanks again everyone!!! I can't tell you how much your wonderful comments have helped me to deal with the losses I've gone through in the last year and a half or so. You all rock!!!
Combination of listening and figuring the chords out (around which the rest is played) and some searches on the web, there IS tab out there that is pretty good. That's what I did, and the best I can suggest. I have no "official" tab I use for this song - I play it a bit differently each time.
Nice playing. Would you be able to tell me what kind of efectt you were using. That would be awesome. Ive tryed heapes and cant find the right sound. Thx. :)
Thanks! I think I used the Clapton Crossroads pedal for the acoustic modeler (to sound more like an acoustic guitar) and probably the Boss CS-3 Compression/Sustaniner pedal. MAYBE I had the Boss-Fender FDR-1 pedal on, but I don't remember). And it was recorded through a Tweed Blues Jr Amp (Jensen Speaker) into a Shure SM-57 mic. I don't think I used the Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble pedal, I really don't remember! Mainly - the acoustic modeler and Compression pedal.
You probably won't believe me, but you actually inspired me to start playing the Guitar with your version of this song. I've listened to it almost every day, and I just love it.
Thanks for getting me into this, even though, most likely, it wasn't your intention at all to get anyone started with this video.
Thank you So very much for such a wonderful comment! You really made my day - heck, my year! :) I feel like I changed a life (yours) and if that has made a positive difference in the world - then it was all worth it and that's really all I want from life.
I thank you sincerely for telling me this!
Jim
I have so many other old videos I just need to edit to put up here -- just a little time and they'll be up!! Thanks for the inspiration! :)
yeah hey sorry my friend actually wrote that last word when I wasn't looking, really sorry, I just wish there was a way to edit messages XD, sorry again.
No problem man! I figured it was either a typo or whatever - the 3 words before it said how you felt and I pretty much ignored the last word -- even could have been slang I wasn't aware of yet.. Again - NO problemo!
Thank you so, so much! I haven't posted it here yet, but my Dad (91) also died about a month ago, and so I have been playing this a lot lately. His passing was unexpected, so I didn't play it for him in this life, but I believe he can still feel it - and my everlasting love for him. I really appreciate your comment and your deeply caring response. Jim S
Thanks! No way could I see using distortion on this song. It was a bit of a stretch to play this piece on electric to start with - so I tried to keep it as acoustic sounding as I could and kept all effects off that would cause any distortion or overdrive. To each their own... maybe some players would find a way to use distortion that worked for them, but I didn't want to go that way on this song.
Thank you everyone who has listened - and especially those who have taken the time to post such supportive and kind comments. I am doing my best and your support helps me more than you know. I just posted an older video - the first one I recorded - of my solo over Stormy Monday. The sound quality is not great as I was just learning to use the webcam, but I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Absolutely beautiful, we played this at my sons funeral, your rendition is great thankyou for posting it. Marls33

It's harder to play this style on electric then on acoustic because there's less room for your fingers on the neck. Or that's what I think anyway...

Thanks so much!

Thank you So very much for such a wonderful comment! You really made my day - heck, my year! :) I feel like I changed a life (yours) and if that has made a positive difference in the world - then it was all worth it and that's really all I want from life.
I thank you sincerely for telling me this!

Jim S

that was really good. it's nice to see someone playing without distortion for a change ;)
kyuba 3 years ago

Thanks again! Jim
