Now take that thing out to smokey hill and try to pan again with a new BLACK or BLUE gold pan with RIFFLES!!! They work 100 times better then the old metal pie pans. And you can get one on Ebay for about 5-15 dollars. There are tons of videos here on you tube teaching how to use them properly. Good luck and keep posting what you find. Im considering making the 4 hour drive myself and giving it a shot!

@Nick2kMan This was my amateur work 3 years ago, even i im a bit imprested by it. I had no formal training in electronics befor that, it was not professional work i was a amateur. Did it help me become a professional yes it did, It made me ask how did this thing work.
Hey, I have a metal detector but it only detects metal about 4 inches down max. It's only a cheap detector. I've thought about making a new coil for it to give it deeper detection and plugging it into the original module. I might try to just make the new coil and put it in the original coil housing. How could I do it and do you think it would be a good idea?
Lot's of hard work there, and you saw the project through to completion. Good job. The nay sayers don't understand the effort that goes into a project like this. Sure the housing is not refined, but that can be improved upon later as need be. Thanks for the video of your project. Now you need to show us you using it to find coins in the yard!
@mikefkingstrutter OMG you think that is shop bought. you obviously know nothing of metal detectors. s t f u boy and learn something before you post your ignorance. lol, noob
@dotdot24 do you want me to send you the plans for a simple cheap metal detector?cuase i know a website that shows you a schematic for the circuit and parts in details, do u want a simple one or a complicated one(not hard just 2x-3x more parts )
Not very good results. Did you equlibrate the coils? The adjustment is very critical, less than 1 mm movement from optimal position can render the coil useless. At this stage, your detector seems to detect the absence of metal better than its presence :) And don't forget, for a matchless circuit, you need CMOS timers!
Also, did you shield your coils? Did you leave the space at the end of the shield?
@Nick2kMan Well this circuit works on RLC and time constants of the 556 timer, and induction of metals. When a metal gets close enough, the metals conductive properly to allow magnetic current to flow the other coil detects this. Using the the pick up coil serries with a capasitor it is just calibrated to the resistance/conductance of gold. It is basicly a transformer and when the permiblity is right the capasitor on the Output gives little resistance makeing noise via the crystal pezo.
@Nick2kMan the wave from the transmiter coil is a sqaure wave, makeing the pick up coil only pick up a small amount of the transmiter coils eddy currents. If you want to research more research Photons/Electromagnetism/Energy/Particle physics/Digital circuits/Electrical resistance/Maxwell/Faraday/Albert Einstein/Chemistry/Mathmatics i dont know every thing, i never will but this helps to know a lot of what we do know it take's work and understanding. This is the stuff we take for granted everday.
@Nick2kMan And a lot more AC/DC, oscillator, transistors, fets, scematics, Lots of Math algebra, trigonomitry. Hats off to Thomas Scarborough for designing this circuit its simple yet easy to build and it works.

hi im michael from philippines
can you show how to make this step by step?
how far down can it detect?
can it detect gold?
im start working in a goldmine area here in mindanao,
this thing could become handy.
makes it easy for us to find gold
thanx for posting

Must say it first didn't work. Untill I took my shoes off like you. I've just found a rusty nail and now I'm off to the doctor.

pretty cool how long did it take you to make it

Wow i sound bad at the start, but i get better sounding in a bit any way i put this thing togather, it uses a 30wind coil and is a matchless cirut.
