  • I love this, her voice has so much pain inside it. It's always like a bunch of colours and the lyrics are like shapes. I always feel like seeing a wonderful painting when listening to her.

  • Although the original was religious (and the lyrics still reflect it) there's a huge element of love and loss in the song, notably in Buckley's. It's not just about faith and God, it's about pain and love too.

  • i hate the guy that coughed

  • She's an outspoken atheist - why is she is singing this song?

  • @gurucarcar I'm pretty sure she is Jewish...

  • She so pretty <3

  • Its okay, i have heard better versions :)

  • Haha what? Did someone forget what "strangled" means?

  • was regina spektor the originator of this song? if not who is?

  • @killingthemsoftly7 Leonard Cohen wrote it, but there have been many many covers of the song.

  • @killingthemsoftly7 I think he's Leonard Cohen ^^

  • thank you so much for posting the download link! Wonderful rendition!

  • Jeff Buckley made love to this song...and no one should be allowed to do it ever again...unless it's Regina Spektor...she always knows how to make a song a human experience

  • @tcdahn7 Rufus wainwright does the best at this song.

  • @EchoLimaIndiaAlphaS Rufus Wainwright needs to be convicted for the crimes against humanity he's commited with his covers.

  • ladna jestes glos tez wymiata

  • A lot of tingle and a little bit of eye water listening to that.

  • of all the versions (wainwright, voegle, lang, cale) i think spektor and buckley have performed the most heartwarming

  • i love her music and regina is so beautiful :O

  • @sxkit: you dumb fuck. the holy dove is the holy spirit. a.k.a. god.

  • if you like this check out imogen heap hallelujah also very good....jeff buckley and regina spektor do it goo thoo tooo...bon jovi is ehhh

  • i am in love x

  • Regina and Rufus ftw

  • I adore Regina too and my fav version of this song is by Damien Rice. He sang it with so much emotions that I just couldn't listen to it for too many times if not I would start feeling depressive too.

  • I didn't really like Kate Voegle's that much. But Jeff Buckley's and Regina's are by far my favorite.

  • Comment removed

  • This is absolutely beautiful. Tares me apart at 2:00

  • woooooah someone cannot spell.

  • @marindajane45 im pretty aware of that, thanks though.

  • A list of mentioned covers:

Kate Voegle: heavy on acoustic and vocals

Rufus Wainwright: rushes past (piano ends on an awesome rumbling bass note)

KD Lang: sways like a ghost

John Cale: elegant, orchestral band may distract

Regina Spektor: sparse accompaniment makes vocals lonelier

Leonard Cohen: original author, quite groovy

Jeff Buckley: infinitely gentle, except for an odd strangled outburst near the end

  • the best for me are Kate Voegle, Rufus Wainwright, Regina Spektor and Jeff Buckley

i have all four of them (:

  • Those are great ones :) My favorite, alongside Regina's, is Allison Crowe's version. It's very beautiful. Piano accompaniment, and very passionate. Similar to Regina's.

  • Brandi Carlile also did a cover. Its cut down and very simpified.

  • I'd also submit Tim Minchin's cover. He's a comedian, but still has an amazing voice, and in my opinion does the best cover of this song.

  • @Saltheigh Myles Kennedy does a great performance too! Check it...the group is Alter Bridge

  • @Saltheigh there was me thinking wainwright wrote it D:

  • @Saltheigh you forgot bon jovi

  • @Saltheigh You forgot imogen heap:(

  • she's so unique and refreshing! i adore her :]

  • What?! What a vile thing to say in the first place, but without justification - WHY is your opinion of this that it is terrible?

  • I like the way she sings some parts kind of staccato, I think it makes the song sound like she's talking to herself or arguing with herself... it's like when one is overwhelmed by emotions ^^

  • very pretty

  • she really captures the meaning behind the song which is very rare escpecially for a girl singing this song.

  • love her.

  • it was good except for the begging.

  • This is the best cover of this song period.

  • so beautiful

  • Kate Voegele version is definitely worth checking out

  • buckley, then regina.

  • Regina is an amazing writer and although the cover of this song may not be the best one out there, it certainly brings emotion and makes you feel the song. The picture at 2:01 is just absolutely stunning. Regina = <3

  • This is good but Jeff Buckley sings it best.

  • couldnt agree more

  • this is the only version i will listen to. <3 <3 <3 regina spektor

  • i still think rufus wainwright's version is the best

  • I do too.

  • Personally, I don't like this version.

It's not as good as others.

Her voice just doesn't seem right, to me, for this song.

  • i love her voice. it''s so delicate and powerful at the same time.

  • I know

  • I'm in love. She makes my heart ache at 2:00

  • I LOVE her version

    and diana Vickers

  • I saw her at Hyde Park London on Monday night, she was amazing!!

  • do you know how excited i am to see this beautiful woman at glastonbury in 5 days?

    kinda indescribable tbh

  • She's at Glastonbury? Drat, I so wish I'd got tickets now...

  • that picture at 3:38 of her is absolutely stunning!

  • this is beautiful...i didn't even like this song that much before i heard this version

  • thank you! this is quite incredible.

  • Agreed! I think the best version of this song I've ever heard was the one by Il Divo.. Of their Colliseum DVD.. It should be around here somewhere on Youtube...

  • WHY is everyone singing this song!

  • because it's awsome!

  • That's a pretty interesting question, actually. My theory would be something like this: Hallelujah is to singers what that famous monologue from Hamlet is to actors. It's the song everyone wants to try and cover, and most people fall short of living up to it, but some really bring it.

  • Someone with Regina's quality of voice is best suited for this song. Not all that insincere over-singing done by X-Factor winners (Diane Vickers exceptional version notwithstanding which I found on Youtube, having not cared for the TV show itself). It calls for an understated vocal. After all the song is portentous enough as it is without over-egged vocals to take away from its natural beauty and gravitas.

  • what is it whith hamlet?

  • I don't think I fully get the question, but I guess what makes Hamlet is a combination of the tragic story, the superb language, and the fact that it's a cloth on which the actor can apply almost any interpretation.

  • she is so amazing. i love her version, imogen heaps version and buckly's version. there are some amazing pictures in this video of dear regina

  • They're totally different styles. You can't compare Jeff Buckley and Regina Spektor. Ever. Even if they are covering the same song...

  • Isnt she singing Jeff's version?

And don't be a dick about it. Music isn't really about who has the better version. Just enjoy what you enjoy. For example I hate rap in pretty much every form, but i understand some people like it. So really, try not to be an ass about someone people like, particularly when you have no decent reason for doing it.

  • I used to hate rap, too, then I found out that it's not all about drugs, gangs, and smackin' a bitch.

  • yeah all the new stuff is about what size in inches your rims are and what color rhymes with the second word after it.... i used to like rap but i only like certain older stuff now before it became about generic "gangster" shit

  • i follow fifiwozere's advice and listen to kd lang's version...it's much better than this one and she truly has a beautiful voice...but i believe no one reaches to jeff buckley's version, it's my favourite so far.

  • this feels like regina's wasted and can't sing it in the right time =)

    can't compare with buckley!

  • this is just lovely. cant beat that vibratto.

  • I think that this is MUCH better than buckley's.

    MUCH

    MUCH.

I guess its all opinion though :)

just the heart in this, especially the end.

    its beautiful, really.

  • love love love regina, but im gonna have to go with buckley on this one

  • This has nothing on Buckley! Opinions are opinions, but who ever thinks that this is better than Wainwright let alone Buckley knows nothing (barasd). I like her voice but out of all Hallelujah covers I've heard its the worst. Buckley tops all. <3

  • you cant say its the worst i like this version better than john mayer thats for sure

  • I just listened to both. Please, Regina's is better hands down. Not even a contest.

  • Listen to KD Lang's version! I think she gets the emotion and meaning of the song best. :)

  • Where is this from? Is from a CD or does she just do it at live performances?

  • HAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHJAJAHAHH "it's called an erection"

  • so much better than buckley's

  • She is my fav artist and that is my fav song! Thanks for uploading!

  • She is great. She is just EPIC.

  • I just get this weird feeling listening to this. I can't bring myself to stop listening.

  • It's called an erection.

  • lmao! XD

  • Nice one.

  • this remark is full of win..

  • Oh haha you're so funny. I mean I think she sings very good.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

  • she did just on this cover

  • fantastic everythin she touches...love!

  • Love Regina.

    Don't love this cover.

  • One of my favourite versions of this song...so much feeling...sigh:)

  • so beautiful!! Id love to hear this live

  • Besides Buckley's version, this is by far the most original-sounding cover of a great song by Mr. Cohen. So many of the Hallelujah covers are rubbish. But definitely not this one. Great job Regina!

  • I completley agree! :D

This is a really nice cover, really natrual sounding and soulful!

But Buckley's version is still the best! :3

  • she's absolutely spectacular.

  • Beautiful song.

  • i luv her

    but this cover is mank

  • THANK YOU!

    i loveee her voice. <333

    =)

  • This is so much better than Rufud Wainwright, he doesn't know what he's singing about, but she does. Oh, she does. It's very soulful, but coming from her, what else would you expect?

  • I love Rufus Wainwright's version, actually. And Jeff Buckley's... I don't think I've heard a version yet that I don't like. But I think Rufus Wainwright's version is the most melodic, and I like that about it.

  • I like it too, but I think it's a bit directionless, if that makes sense.

  • he plays it well but i'm not a big fan of his singing on it i dunno it seems very flat =/ ( don't flame me lol ) but this version is amazing!

  • Listen to KD langs version beautiful :)

  • plllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease tell me this comment is a joke?????! :/

  • eh, the x factor winners song, not a version of it. get you're facts straight before getting all weird. :/

  • she uses the little vibratos that Jeff Buckley used... I love it, it works with her soprano voice

  • i've heard the original of this song and thought it was ok sorta... but when Regina sings it it sounds beautiful! i luv her!!

  • beautiful! but what else would we expect from regina? she can do no wrong =]

  • God, I swear her voice is heavenly. A cross maybe of Fionna, Jewel, and Bjork

  • i know what you mean.. i was a little disappointed i normally love her music. though i didnt like kates either lol im picky i quess. no one can really beat buckley thankfully :)

  • i prefer wainwright, and i love lind, holm, fuentes and nilsen.

  • You don't know what the hell youre talkin about ruband, you idiot. Her voice blows kate's out of the water. This is a live version obviously and not the best recording. Still, only second to Jeff Buckley.

  • the prettiest voice and the most beautiful song ever written.

    this makes me cry :)

  • Anyone who likes Regina will like this and i love it :] x

  • I love her.

    Awesome! Thanks.xxx

  • Hillary Duff is a terrible human being, if only because of the 'art' she has contributed to society. I am angry. Argg. Mad. Argghh!

  • At 2:04 she looks like hilariy duff...

  • Hillary Duff... you mean the pig in the lower left?

  • Nah....the pig's WAY more hot than Duff. = P

  • this is phenominal

  • My favorite female version of this song. It's hard to beat Jeff Buckley's version, but this comes pretty darn close. Thank you Cohen for this song!

  • I love you for posting this, lol.

I'm a fan of the original, Leonard Cohen, version, and not much else, but Reg does it amazingly. :D

  • oh my god. I love this song. I didn't know Regina did this song. It makes me cry every time and even more so when she sings it. She is the most amazing, genuine, and brilliantly gifted singer I know.

  • I think every great artist has to do their own cover of this song. It's like a rite of passage, hah.

  • And a lot of shitty artists jumped on the bandwagon, too, to co-opt this masterpiece in the name of 'American Idol' and sappy, studio pap. I heard Kate Voegele's cover and I was almost ashamed.

    /rant

Regina's version is priceless. Her voice and character are more than deserving of this song.

  • Haha, very true.

  • I agree. I was talking to some girl about the covers and she said Regina's was "okay". She then said that if she were to rank them, it'd go in this order:

    "1. Jeff's version

    2. Kate's version [WTF?]

    3. My mom's version

    5. That one guy I gave a quarter to when I was 9's version

    ~

    99.9 Regina's version"

I was livid. I wanted to smack her.

You do NOT disrespect Regina like that. >=[

  • yeah you should have smacked her right across her face.

    BACKHANDED!!!!

  • i'd put hers at number three, after karin bergquist (over the rhine) and buckley. leonard is waaay down the list.

  • Everyone has a right to their own opinion, even if they are not the same as yours.

  • It's not that she had a different opinion, it's the fact that she was being rude and sarcastic about it.

  • Thanks SO much for this. I saw her in concert a few months back. Definitely one of the top ten I've ever been to.

    The download is most awesome.

  • shes given her fans reasons, reasons and more passionate reasons to fall for her and her music over and over again! I know shes got me under her strange, quirky, and yet oh so achingly beautiful spell.

  • Whatcd does have this song? Thanks!

  • Can u send me this PLZ?!

  • love the song, love regina spektor...perfect

  • Where did you get this?

  • She does it perfectly. I don't know if I like any other cover better. Most, I think (well, Myles Kennedy does a pretty good job, if a little rough), totally butcher this song.

  • I think Jeff Buckley does this song beautifully

  • Yeah, he's good, too!

  • You do not refer to Jeff Buckley as simply "good".

  • Woops

  • I'm in love with this girl! :o)

  • I've got chills...listening to this song...

  • oh my god...wow i...just wow

  • i have this. it's fantastic, i cry when i hear it.

  • i'd also kill for a copy of this!

  • Dont kill. I dont think Regina would like that! :o)

  • Can someone please send me that song? :)

  • Amazing!

where'd you get the song from if you don't mind me asking?

  • This is the most amazing beautiful song ever, how did you get this recorded? I would love so very much to have a copy?

  • Oh my god, Regina Spektor and Leonard Cohen, the best song in the world and the best singer!
