I think the only reason why people think that Kirk and Spock are not in love with one another is because of homophobia. This is that "[Kirk or Spock] is too cool to be gay" mentality. At the time when the show aired, their relationship simply showed that they were really good friends, and that was simply because homosexual relationships weren't portrayed on TV back then.

Of course, in hindsight, the two of them totally have the hots for each other. It takes place in the future, not the 1960's.

As far as the "Gene just wanted to show them as being brothers" stuff goes, nah. This is Roddenberry we are talking about here and his goal was to push the envelope on social issues as far as the times would let him get away with.Nimoy, in particular, is such a great actor he was able to convey his deep but conflicted feelings for his captain in ways that were almost obvious and subtle at the same time. Spock being half-Vulcan and already ashamed of his emotions made it all the more complex.

I don't believe Gene wanted the relationship to be considered homosexual, it was supposed to show that they have a deep friendship, like brothers. This was actually stated in an episode. when Kirk states that Spock is like his brother and Spock agrees. It's a Bromance, not a Romance.

@thegalaxyexplorer -- They are close like brothers, no argument here, but they're also more than that, as Gene showed us by inventing the Vulcan word t'hy'la, which means friend/brother/lover, and Spock specifically refers to Kirk as his t'hy'la twice in the novelization of The Motion Picture (which was written by Gene himself). There's a ton of other evidence that I can't explain in one comment...which is why I started this show. =P

Actually, my mother was an original fan of the show. I was very little at the time and thought mum was a bit daft for watching a show with a guy with pointed ears. But she was just a regular 20 something housewife, no drugs, not a hippie. I'm not sure she didn't "notice anything" though, as she once said she thought Kirk and Spock "made a cute couple".

I wasn't really saying all of the people watching TOS were druggies and hippies because I know many different people who weren't. (I actually find the 60s to be an enlightening time in history considering it being a big period of "firsts" and that whole peace, rights, borderline anarchy, and uprising of leaders thing going on ...if only is was just those things...but simplicity in statements...)
