  • this so.... beautiful

  • What album release is this from?

  • What a wunderfull song!

  • @ all morons who think skinny lizzy or metallica wrote this song.... This is a traditional irish folk song that was created 200 years.

It was first recoded in the 1950's by various artists.

This song became famous when the Irish folk band "The Dubliners" recorded this song on three different albums and preformed it internationally as their signature song in the 1960's.

Thin Lizzy didn't make their horrible cover untill the late 1970's. Metallica made their version in 1998.

    Thanks

  • @MrSpudshooter

    the original is the best

but i like the metallica version though

  • @MustHearMetallica

original is an irish folk song fro 17th century

    god i hate stupid people

  • @MrSpudshooter why are people morons if they didn't know that? you're an idiot. I feel bad for you if you are always that negative for no reason. also, thin lizzy's version is much better.

  • @MrSpudshooter finally, someone else that knows the origin of this song. i love you. if guy (no gay, just bro) if girl. i love you!

  • Comment removed

  • There s only one nationality I would change for my Croatian heritage-the Irish!

  • Yep

  • It makes you whant to go to Ireland

  • Metallica rules and they made the best Version of Whiskey in the Jar

  • @Hernandez1Checker2 Right dude!

  • I love this song, whether he comes by metallica, or by the dubliners.

  • @DonJuan979 This is the smartest comment I saw here!

  • @flameriderful thx^^

  • Brill

  • normally i listen to metal but the original song is still the best ^^

  • @tolkerbass same to me :D

  • I am Turkish...and I love the Dubliners...

  • is this song just about women or about any special historical event or period?

  • up the I I IRA

  • I can play it on guitar xD but it´s only god if you sing and play by the fire ;) sorry for gramatic but I´m not god and come from germany ;)

  • I love this song, and i mean this version, the others don´t have the "ol pub song" charm

  • well its an irsh song - but can they play 'Dixie' ?

  • you know the funny thing is bluegrass is a version of irish folk music

  • you dont get great music like this coming out of america

  • Holy shit there is definetly such a difference to metallicas and dubliners

  • @a1180994 Yea, it's called talent...

  • music irish pub

  • Great Song. So Is Thin Lizzys Version

  • This is BY FAR my favorite version of this song. Metallica's version is good it just doesn't have the same fun feeling as this one.

Damn I love Irish folk music, great song :)

  • jennys a Dick

  • Jane was a bitch..

  • t'was jenny mate.

  • yeah you are right gent, thanks =)

  • no problem.

  • This sounds way better than that Metallica crap they call Wiskey in the jar

  • did anybody have the version of this song, when the dubliners sing together with the pogues? i search it so long time...

  • Indeed they did, casperld. As did Lizzy. And so for O'Connor on "Scorn Not His Simplicity".

Some songs just need to be left to the ones that did them best and the Dubliners and Luke Kelly did it the best.

And I do like much of Metallica's work but was never much of a fan of Lizzy.

But some things are better left untouched. Dubliners songs are one of them.

  • Nobody sings it better than Luke Kelly!

Please stop talking about Metallica. They butchered the damn song!

  • Always reminds me of my grandfather. He was a moonshiner in his younger days. Dunno what that has to do with this song/story but he is the best. Love ya Pop. Bless ya.

  • The Moon is our Sun ;-)

  • hehe! ;) Hmmm.... indeed. I like that. Tks

  • Loving that penny whistle.

  • This song is so old not even remembered when and by who it was first chanted. Probably by Ireland it self^^

  • Me and many of my mates, use to sing this in the pub, aswell as The Wild Rover. One of the few songs that after a thousand times hearing never gets boring!

'Stand and Deliver for you are a bold Deceiver'!

  • Great version, Metallica screwed it up.

  • Metallica made a cover after "whiskey in the jar", by Thin Lizzie.

  • and Thin Lizzy made a cover of this song.

  • Indeed...Metallica were huge fans of Lizzy!

  • in my opinion, nothing beats folk, particuarly the irish kind for passion and just generally kicking the ass of most modern music! Up the Dubs!!!! xx

  • I love this song.

I like the version from the dubliners better then from metallica.

  • I do too!

  • @Parabuthus1990 i dont :) But this one are pwnage too! :)

  • @Parabuthus1990 i do kinda i guess but im a metal head and also i m used this kinda music because i live in belfast

  • @Parabuthus1990 You can't compare the version of this band with the metallica's version... O.O

  • @ClaudeoRacing maybe because they are diffrent songs u dick!

  • R.I.P. RONNIE

  • Ciaran rocks!!

  • Beautiful! Thanks from Israel.

  • And some men like to hear,

To hear the DUBLIN ROAR a-roaring!

  • If ya have ever noticed, The Dubliners always had thegreatest singers with them, Luke Kelly by far the best and Ronnie Drew and Paddy Reilly, I found they were all great and as well as Ciaran, always loved the sound of his voice. Although I am only part irish and more scottish and english I can't help but breathe in all sort of folk music, whether it's english, irish or scottish. I am very happy to say that no other music is better then that of the music of our heritages. God Bless.

  • Hell Yell, jolly good tune mate

  • Where can I find this specific version? Luke Kelly and the Dubliners sang this song many times, but I want to find a digital copy of this specific performance. Can you help?

  • This is the one I got off iTunes. There's several Dubliners "whiskey in the jar" on iTunes but you will recognize this one because it has the loudest clapping.

They don't have the Luke intro, though, it just starts with the fiddle.

  • the dubliners 'r' the original!!!

    are the best!!!

that is the essence of Ireland!!!!

    green,gold and black beer!!!

  • @jennifertt69

    Amen me brother!

  • WHiskey in the Jar is an old song, waay older than something from the Sixties.

  • irish people are fun

  • The Dubliners have the lyrics correct but I've known this song as "Gilgary's Mountain". It was recorded by Peter Paul & Mary in the early sixties. I guess it may be known under both titles?

  • There are many different versions.

  • guon the dubs up da ra!!!!

  • is there a version of whisky in the jar by uriah heep too?

  • I like that whistle in the backgroud

  • its an Irish instrument called a tin whistle

  • The Dubliners' version is simply the best.

  • Another great song by the Dubliners. 5*****

  • Yes, that is The best version of this song i´ve ever heard

  • the Dubliners have my second fav version but i dont really like this one that much i think their live copy is better even if it does have a mistake in the start

  • This is by far the best version of Whiskey in a Jar.

(The Metallica version was fantastic, but this version really captures the essence of Celtic music)

  • the Immortal Luke kelly

  • Good Music! Bella canzone...bella mossa Ronnie Drew!

  • I like this Irish pronunciation! So natural!

  • well thank you kindly young sir, and if your a lass , even better...

  • wkd grup and tinkers any one no how u can get them on cd

  • Shiznit!

  • quella e una canzione molto particolare piena dentusiasmo!Sono felice daverla conosciuta.

  • diz song iz awzoommmmm!11one

  • this is the bizz.

  • j'aime aussi énormément cette chanson et tout comme Worydwen je déteste la version de métalica qui est absolument inutile dans le monde de la musique!

  • I'm told I sang this song for hours on end over New Year's. I don't remember it, because of all the whiskey that made its way from the jar into my glass, but what I do know is that Luke sang it a damn sight better than I did.

  • I was stone dead pissed together with 3 of these awesome daddyo's at the gents in De Vereeniging in Nijmegen, Holland...

Yes, and there was definitely whiskEy in the jar ...

  • J'aime énormément la version des Dubliners, autant que je déteste celle de Métallica qui est vraiment sans intérêt, trop lente, avec un accompagnement et des voix relativement déplacés par rapport au style du morceau .

  • I think there's no more proove that Metallica likes this style of music, like everyone knows they made a cover, although its diferent i don't think people should say its bad, my point is...if Metallica really likes kind of music, then you have something in common with them and you should not insult them because they converted this song to THEIR style of music...XD, if you dont like Metallica then dont listen to Metallica...lol

  • Let me remind you, that since Metallica took in their cover everything from Thin Lizzy (including lyrics, which are different from the one sung by folk singers) and just added more guitar effects, there is no use in saying about 'Metallica style'. Maybe they just like the song, there is nothing wrong with that, but giving them a credit for anything is wrong. And that's the reason that I hate them... They didn't even have balls to figure out their own riffs...

  • well you're right , but Metallica does have his style in this song, so as thin lizzy and the dubliners, and if Metallica change some riffs of this song of perhaps all of them, people would be like wtf! this is not whiskey in the jar!! ..that would piss me off too ...XD

  • Metallica did a cover of Thin Lizzys verition of the song.

  • This is why the Dublin council unanimously voted to have a statue of Luke Kelly on the Bank of the Liffey

  • I hate Metallica's version

  • Hehe, I hate when people say Metallica is better. Those hacks are almost as bad as the Dropkicks.

  • I have to give the Dropkick Murphys credit, they got me into the Clancys and the Dubliners. I heard their songs like Finnegan's Wake and The Auld Triangle and it made me get into the original stuff. I don't really like them anymore as an Irish band, but a punk band. I still have all of their albums. But Metallica sucks ass and Thin Lizzy's version is ok, not the best.

  • Hey I like the Dropkicks and the Dubliners the same way

  • @LordOfNumenor well, if you think metallica is bad than you really silly or just deaf

  • Luke's brilliant at it.

  • Ah yes, the best version I think. I don't have the intro though. I think kelly already put this up but I don't care it's a great redition (except it doesnt have the lst verse)

  • Ooh I didn't notice that kelly had already posted this one. Normally I check before I post to see if anyone has put it up. Must have slipped my mind.
