1958 Holland Concert "Kinda Dukish" is better and refined than here. This is much younger. No Drum solo though....but Woodyard does another one which rocks.
lol if you think john Bonham is better then him then obviously you've got JOKE/TOOL written on your forehead, so dont even bother commenting you'd do better to keep your ignorance to yourself.
Sam Woodyard was one of the very first drummers to use to bass drums. This clip clearly shows how great his mastery of his instrument he achieved. The musicality and motivic development in his playing seems to me to be on the highest level of his art.
Saw played with Duke for about 18 years. So knowing how demanding Duke was, I guess Sam was doing the job... I had the chance to see him 20 years ago. He was sick but he went for a drum battle with Michael Silva, and believe me, these two masters did an amazing show. No doubt Sam influenced a lot of modern drummers. But I think it's stupid to compare Woodyard with Bonham. Different time, different music, different drumset.
Yes and here we have a pre zep / Bonham guy playing so called Triplets that are so overused and easy to play but here we have a Master playing them even more melodic and pre moby stick...This iaearly to mid 60s Dont tell me Bonham invented anything...
Holy Cow! How hip was that! Two thumbs and 5 stars waaaaaayyyy up for Duke and this awsome band. Hot damn! Sam Woodyard has got drumming skills and then some. That man is hot on the drums! I also gotta give The Duke a great deal of credit for doing this jazz peice. Very cool. I'm a huge nut for great jazz music such as this. By the way, could somebody tell me please whom that man is on the bass? Thanks again for this great clip. :)
im goi t sample this and people will bug out when their hear it, i play drums, so i know how hard it is to hit a stick that fast, this guy is super RIDIC
Genial, que años mas maravillosos ! que regresen este tipo de bandas...jazz, blues...!

Matched Grip!!!!! And Reso Heads off the bottoms of the Toms! He's clearly ahead of his time. All on a pretty set of Premiers.

This is as great as any Buddy Rich solo.
Sam Woodyard was a true master.
Popular pop and rock drummers could learn so much
from guys like Buddy and Sam.
Love them.
