I first heard this when I was about 4, my mum played it all the time, I am now 46 and I play it all the time and My kids love it. Its timeless. Has to be LOUD. One of the very few exceptionally talented singers left.
Hate to tell you tjohn555 but this (and all of the Hot August Night album) was recorded at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and my dad was there. 10 sold out shows at the Greek. Still to this day it's one of the greatest live albums ever.
Why oh why didn't Neil remain the blistering rocker he was & this picture portrays? Why did he become so bland. He's always been good but compared to this he did became bland. "Cherry Cherry" to all those middle of the road type songs? Occasionally,he'd remind me he had it: "Mama Don't Know" = excellent. ALL of "Beautiful Noise" = excellent. But..then, "Heartlight," & Streisand? Thank God he's back to recording great stuff again. How about another Robbie Robertson produced album Neil?
@lastrada52 yep I agree, his early stuff was second to none, not only were they popular, but they were rooted in rock n roll, he def went the wrong way from my POV. This is his album of record, for anyone doubting his rock cred. I think the streisand thing and his ablums in the mid 80s to 90s hurt his hall nominations etc.
@jabb69 - Yes, jabb69 -- this live album is Neil Diamonds testament to his rock credibility. Despite his 80's & 90's music possibly hurting his nomination & over-all mention in anyone's conversation about great rock singers, the only redeeming value is that I would rather listen to Neil than anything by Barry Manilow. Neil, at least, tried to keep his material of high quality. It just didn't resound in my ears -- I prefer to hear "Cherry Cherry" and that Neil Diamond rock voice.
@lastrada52 well on thing for certain, despite neil not continuing on the total rock path, I never ever put him in that shit class of soft music associated with manilow---uugh
I wish someone would upload 'Holly Holy' from HAN. It is the ONLY version of this song! All other versions, live and studio, don't come close to the intensity of that performance.
@clipboardcrotch Just curious, how do you know he hated immigrants? After all, he has that song called "America" about immigrants coming to America that sounds very positive about them. I'm just interested to know what you're basing your information on.
@babykinsism it was a take off from a SNL skit that willl farrell did of ND---it was funny as hell.....one spoof was him saying he was on the road and wrote a song after he killed a drifter to get a erection!! dont take offense, just funny humor by will farrell
@jabb69 Thank you for letting me know and explaining it for me. Sometimes people write something crazy, and I was like what the...I do appreciate SNL humor though, and I personally miss Belushi. More cowbell!
My mom had this album.it featured heavily on the playlist at family gatherings at the grandparents' place,in the days when everyone played nicely together and we got together on impulse,no reason but to have a barbecue or play cards...doesn't happen much these days.Sad,but the memories are good.
The vinyl kicks ass; the CD not so much. I prefer the nuances of vinyl over "sterilized" digital. Guess that's what happens when you're born in the fifties and grow up during in the sixties and seventies. lol
Lot of energy in this version that can't be captured in a studio version. Even though he's only working out on an acoustic guitar, you can feel the rockin! Hope the current generation gets into the groove of this great song! KickA_s Neil.... Thanks!
@milarchdoha To me, that's what makes ND concerts and Live Albums, especially the early years (mostly '70-90's) the best...he sings and performs every song like it will be the last time...so much energy and passion. He still puts everything he can into it, father time has just limited what he has...still the greatest!
I listen to the music but the gods arent meant for everyone just fcking murderous whre beasts, so glad I wasnt one. Always to have the children of the enemy, haha, I shouldve cloned myself had my own babies said to hell with fcking assholes. Brings back memories, Car stereo full blast! going at 11o km/hr on the freeway. in a fast Mazda capella with a hot chick having her hand on my lap...............
Mum n dad went to see him in the seventies and i saw hime in the nineties, just as good, he is a LEGEND!! No-one can sing like he does! One of the BEST SONGS
EVER I think! Brings back a lot of fond memories of happy family nights
My Dad used to wake us up on Sat mornings to this album hence my love of Neil Diamond today (46yrs) I agree its the best music and you can't help but like it. It puts a smile on my face every time and yes now my kids think I'm mad too!
Is that pic of Diamond on the cover? My dad used to play this album non stop when I was a kid and I could never figure out why the pic looked so different from how Neil looked by the early 80s. Looks nothing at all like him (if it is in fact him). Great album
15 at the time. This concert was just magic. He was great. I've seen more than a few, Heart and Neil Diamond are just the best live in their prime. Just special. And both aren't in the Hall of Shame(Fame):( Shame is the right word too.
@as435943 diamond went in man, in new york at a hall of fame gala- diamond is in the RR hall of fame as of late last yr and the even within the past 45 days.
I had the pleasuse of being at the Greatest eil Diamond Concert ever on a Hot August Night, 1972 in the 4500 seat Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with the one girl I loved then, bfore and now, tho we're married to others and for 40 od years each, but we reconnected and talk almost daily, see each other every now and then (60 miles apart) and if hers dies and mine does we WILL be as we were meant. I was a dumb ass for letting her go 3 times. She is my one and only confidant. We saw EVERY band, all
This is one of my favorite songs from when I was a kid, and my dad's favorite singer. Unfortunately, my father passed away from lung cancer February 3 this year, but I can feel close to my father by listening to Neil Diamond's songs.
@spahjrp Yes, I think you may have an idea about where I'm at. MP3 is okay but to REALLY get into a song, you need better "stuff". That's what I was talking about...a quiet room where nothing gets in the way of the music. And anyway, "technology" sometimes is nothing more than "dumbing down" things so the genetic throwbacks can hear what you are "talking" about? I just want to listen to the MUSIC!
I used to love playing this album when I was running full sprint across college campus to get to class on time. (At least a 10 minute run) The energy in the music was FANTASTIC! I could have kept running MUCH longer listening to it!
There was a girl in my freshman high school class named "Cherry"...she never knew I was alive...a drop dead BABE. However, this was about 13 or 14 years BEFORE this song was done! Damn, just shoot me!
@demonsbutterfly: Yeah....at first you don't even know if it's the right song. Keeps ya guessing.
Another song with a REALLY cool intro is "Ride My Seesaw" (1968) by The Moody Blues. It totally kicks ass. (Make sure you hear the full-length verison, though. The extended intro doesn't always make it onto radio play.)
well people it finally happened, Neil was called about two weeks ago and told he made it- the rock n roll hall of fame announced Neil, tom waitts, dr john ( also from the last waltz ) and alice cooper will be at the r and r ceremony in march and all performing as this yrs induction class. They finally got it right! Congrats Neil, if you are not part of rock then there isn't any rock.
I remember listening to this album 1997 with a nother mate when we were takening over a house/rent, they left funiture etc and one of the stuff was a stero/album which had a Neil Diamond August Night 1972 CD, (you have to understand we were both into hard core RAP etc) so when we were bored/drunk we decided to put the CD on.....well now to this day we both are Neil Diamond fans.....
Sometime in the mid-70s my entire family here in Ohio went to see Neil at Richfield Coliseum. It was my first show and it was GREAT! After that I graduated to Ozzy, Iron Maiden and other great music but I when I want to recall the best times of my life when my family was together and happy I play Neil and thoroughly enjoy it. It just never gets old. Thanks for decades of great music and entertainment, Neil. You are like a family member.
@greenpilgrim50 Damn...I am too old for this. I cain't keep all the pieces in play here. Who ARE YOU? Hot wife? I've had 2 of those...sorta like roman candles...lots of noise and one helluva splash, but not much left afterwards. I am digressing into something politically totally INCORRECT here...but, I'm still almost sober.
Never regretted the wives...but I sure as hell wish I had the Gremlin back...and it was "copper", not brown.
@spahjrp my gremlin was brown, LOL! It was a great car though. I abused it mercilessly & it just ran and ran. Looked like hell, but it ran! I was making a joke about being your ex. You don't know me. But I was all those things to another man, may he RIP.
@greenpilgrim50 Do you remember what you paid for it? Under 2k for me. Stick shit and the very FIRST car my wife had EVER DRIVEN. She didn't even have a driver's license when I first met her. A damned fine woman and I messed it up...and wrecked the damn Gremlin too. You can never go back.
I had the 8 track, the cassette, the vinyl (11 copies - yeah, I was 16 and in love!) - got to get the disk one of these days! This is the best live album ever.
Oh My God !! I just retired and moved back to Maine, but found out in CT from Stereo Surgeon that my KLH with beautiful speaker cldn't be repaired. I hardly used it, but have to get a new system for my LP collection. I have BOTH Hot August Night and Love At the Greek double albums ! CDs don't have same quality, you lose fullness and nuance.
22 seconds ago I'm 35 and I grew up in the house of Neil. This was the song that my Dad would play to wake up my Mom. To this day I get emotional when I hear any of his songs. Thank you FreneticKey.
As a general rule, I don't like live albums. The noise of the crowd drowns out the music, usually. However, this crowd here is so darn respectful. I feel a part of the audience every time I listen to this album. It never fails to give me goose bumps! Such emotion on each song! WOW! Thanks for sharing! xo
@pearlsgirl61 Actually the crowd noise was muted. Apparently they screamed and shouted the whole show. I like that they did that but I still don't think Diamond could keep up that energy with a stoic crowd. One of the greatest live albums of all time for sure!
I was at the greek the night this was recorded. It was the first concert I had ever been to. What an evening. I can remember during the prologue the fire doors to the stage were closed and you could hear the music. Then the doors start opening and they go into crunchy granola, then neil comes out. I still remember it as if it were just yesteday.
Thanks so much for sharing the Hot August Night songs....I saw the concert in Louisville back in 72, and WOW!!!!! Still one of my favorite albums of all time.
Loving this in Sydney Australia. I was 6 years old on Hot August Night. Thank you for sharing this. My older sister listened to Neil Diamond so I got to hear some at the time, but have discovered it for myself.
@HarrisonM17 Similar story - my 16yr old son recently installed a new stereo system in his car with a zillion watt amp, sub woofers and the works. He had his ipod plugged in and we were playing ND Hot August Night Pulled up to a traffic light next to some kid playing rap crap pretty loud. My son switched to Cherry, Cherry and slowly turned it up until he completely drowned out the rap crap. He slooowly drove through the intersection when the light turned green...it was a great.
@HarrisonM17 not to nit pick, but Diamonds band for this concert (and for most of his concerts) was MASSIVE; check this out; Neil Diamond - vocals and guitar
Richard Bennett - guitar
Danny Nicholson - guitar
Emory Gordy, Jr. - guitar and vibraphone
Alan Lindgren - keyboards
Reinie Press - bass
Dennis St. John - drums
Jefferson Kewley - percussion
String section - 40 Members
Regardless, you said it right; PURE rock and roll!
@HarrisonM17 lol some things never get old -my ol man is still rockin at like 90 or 100 or something I forget how old he is, still blasting hot august nights in the truck still gettin' high still digs going places, with the sterio cranked.. The only differance is now it's him getting dragged along instead of me.
It was the number one charting album in Australia for the 1970s, entering the Australian album charts in late 1972 and was still charting in the top 20 in 1976. It re-entered the Australian top 10 in 1982.
TThis live album remains one of the great classic live albums of all time.
I first heard this when I was about 4, my mum played it all the time, I am now 46 and I play it all the time and My kids love it. Its timeless. Has to be LOUD. One of the very few exceptionally talented singers left.

Let's see...3 year old son, hot wife, and a Gremlin...hey, 3 outta 3 ain't bad!
spahjrp 1 year ago
@spahjrp hey we had a brown gremlin! and i was somebodies hot wife! and we had a 3 yr old. are you my ex?
greenpilgrim50 5 months ago
@greenpilgrim50 Damn...I am too old for this. I cain't keep all the pieces in play here. Who ARE YOU? Hot wife? I've had 2 of those...sorta like roman candles...lots of noise and one helluva splash, but not much left afterwards. I am digressing into something politically totally INCORRECT here...but, I'm still almost sober.
Never regretted the wives...but I sure as hell wish I had the Gremlin back...and it was "copper", not brown.
spahjrp 5 months ago
@spahjrp my gremlin was brown, LOL! It was a great car though. I abused it mercilessly & it just ran and ran. Looked like hell, but it ran! I was making a joke about being your ex. You don't know me. But I was all those things to another man, may he RIP.
greenpilgrim50 5 months ago
@greenpilgrim50 Do you remember what you paid for it? Under 2k for me. Stick shit and the very FIRST car my wife had EVER DRIVEN. She didn't even have a driver's license when I first met her. A damned fine woman and I messed it up...and wrecked the damn Gremlin too. You can never go back.

LOCODSW
22 seconds ago I'm 35 and I grew up in the house of Neil. This was the song that my Dad would play to wake up my Mom. To this day I get emotional when I hear any of his songs. Thank you FreneticKey.

As a general rule, I don't like live albums. The noise of the crowd drowns out the music, usually. However, this crowd here is so darn respectful. I feel a part of the audience every time I listen to this album. It never fails to give me goose bumps! Such emotion on each song! WOW! Thanks for sharing! xo
pearlsgirl61 1 year ago
@pearlsgirl61 Actually the crowd noise was muted. Apparently they screamed and shouted the whole show. I like that they did that but I still don't think Diamond could keep up that energy with a stoic crowd. One of the greatest live albums of all time for sure!

I was at the greek the night this was recorded. It was the first concert I had ever been to. What an evening. I can remember during the prologue the fire doors to the stage were closed and you could hear the music. Then the doors start opening and they go into crunchy granola, then neil comes out. I still remember it as if it were just yesteday.

Hey FreneticKey,
Loving this in Sydney Australia. I was 6 years old on Hot August Night. Thank you for sharing this. My older sister listened to Neil Diamond so I got to hear some at the time, but have discovered it for myself.
Best wishes. Vicki

dad and i were listening to it the other day, full blast down the freeway, people were like looking at us and we just smiled =D
This is music, better than computer noises and people screaming there faces off.
Just pure voice, guitar, bass, drums, piano (I've probably missed something)
Great quality too man, thanks

@HarrisonM17 Similar story - my 16yr old son recently installed a new stereo system in his car with a zillion watt amp, sub woofers and the works. He had his ipod plugged in and we were playing ND Hot August Night Pulled up to a traffic light next to some kid playing rap crap pretty loud. My son switched to Cherry, Cherry and slowly turned it up until he completely drowned out the rap crap. He slooowly drove through the intersection when the light turned green...it was a great.

@shilo901 I love this story :) !!
bon1042 1 year ago
@HarrisonM17 not to nit pick, but Diamonds band for this concert (and for most of his concerts) was MASSIVE; check this out; Neil Diamond - vocals and guitar
Richard Bennett - guitar
Danny Nicholson - guitar
Emory Gordy, Jr. - guitar and vibraphone
Alan Lindgren - keyboards
Reinie Press - bass
Dennis St. John - drums
Jefferson Kewley - percussion
String section - 40 Members
Regardless, you said it right; PURE rock and roll!

It was the number one charting album in Australia for the 1970s, entering the Australian album charts in late 1972 and was still charting in the top 20 in 1976. It re-entered the Australian top 10 in 1982.
TThis live album remains one of the great classic live albums of all time.
