For those who are complaining it's not showing up with new firmware....
1) Make sure you looking in the systemsettings/about menu and changed the version to be newer than your current version in the version file on your flash drive
2) Make sure you actually downloaded the correct firmware! For this box you need the files that do not have a 2 on the end, if your files have a 2 on the end you downloaded the wrong ones!
hi. I'm trying to flash the firmware into WDTV Live (updated to the last official firmware - 1.06.##) but when I do hte hard reboot, it doesnt do anything. I tried to modify the "ver" and I put several values *above* the original firmware, but nothing happens. Is the newest official firmware disabling something? Hi, I've had the same problems, changing the ver number and with no success, Until I saw an old post that suggested removing the underscore ( _ ) in the ver file and changing to a dot ( . )
Once I'd done this it suddenly worked. So, to be clear, I changed the ver number in the ver file first to one higher than was on my WDTV Live official firmware number, when that didn't work still I then changed the underscore to a dot. Hope this works for those that have problems.
SSSMARS could you please help i followed the instructions and the WD is now not working at all o_O when it goes to update it comes up with warning signs to insert usb with the files on it thought the files are already on there and its failing to update. and now its just a brick D:
@GabrielIsLive Did you install the correct firmware for the right device? Many, many people of done this with out a problem. Did you change the .ver file to show something higher then what was currently on the device? This is the first I have ever heard of anyone bricking this device. I would check the forums.wdlxtv.c o m
@utube12998 I'm not sure what type of custom firmware there is for Netgear so I would do a google search to see. If not, I would recommend getting a WDTV Live player.

Thank video is really good, i've been trying to do this for a bit now and could not until i found video. Only issue, when i remove flash, theme goes back to old. i am guessing i have to move files from flash drive to box, now?
@MrLucky78 when you download the 3 files and put them on the hard drive you need to go in the .ver file (open with notepad) and change the 1.02.21 to something higher then what you currently have on your WDTV otherwise it will consider it lower and will not even show there is an update (it thinks it is a downgrade) so change it to something like 1.04.18 and click save, plug flash drive in, and hard reboot. It then should recognize it then.
i dont really care about the customizations. i just wanna know if this can search for movies in the plugged in hard drive since its a hassle going through folders n folders. also can this broadcast tv channels? i have the wdtvliveplus but the fast forward function pisses me off. at 16x its still slow as hell. can the hack fix that?
@T1ger8oi On my remote there is a search feature and it works good but I'm assuming it would work without the custom firmware. I never have a problem searching (I actually never use the search feature and I have hundreds of movies on it). As for the 16x fast forward, yes it works great. If I want to get to the middle of a movie it may take a minute but I don't see that as a problem. You can always try it and if you don't like it just revert back to the original.
@sssmars u can change it back to original? i didnt know. thought it will stay that way. im still thinking about whether i should return my wd and get a roku. can u stream online tv from wd? or can the hack somehow lets you watch local channels?
@T1ger8oi Yes you can. You can and can not stream live tv. I know that is kinda broad but go to hxxp://forum.wdlxtv.com and you can get some more info from there about the live tv. Local channels I don't believe will stream from the wdtv. I use a slingbox to stream my cable box and my wdtv anywhere I go to my laptop.

Just updated to 1.04.22 and lost sound on all MP4 files, tried to change to B-rad 1.02.22 but even if I change the ver to 1.04.23 it just stays on 0% . Anyone know how I can get B-rad to work?
@SantaBarbaraJohnny I will have to do some looking on that as I don't own a mac. What format do Macs use for hard drives? Your mac should be able to do it or there should be a program out there for mac to make ntfs or fat formatted drives.
@SantaBarbaraJohnny Mine is shipping to me as we speak, but it should support HFS+ ("Mac OS Extended", if you look in Disk Utility). However, you will need to turn off Journaling on the drive you'd like to use by using Disk Utility.
To be able to install B-Rads firmware, you will need to edit the .ver file and change the version # to a higher one that what it showing in the WDTV settings under "About"

@labombaNL I really don't know to tell you the truth. I'm not sure there is any custom firmware out for it yet but I could be mistaken. Do a google search and see what you come up with.
@sssmars yeah this is an old post, I managed to make it work. However, I can't get the audio to work for some reason. Eventhough I have a 7.1 ch home theater that supports all audio. The main problem is playing mpeg audio and AAC. but even some AC3 doesen't work! most of the times DTS does work. Could you help?

Great Job with the Tutorial! Really informative. Your effort is appreciated. One question...How should the folder structure be set up? Some say you have to have an individual folder for each movie, others claim you can have multiple movies and sheets in the same folder.

i got this new player it had version 1.02.17 on it, so as soon as i connected to internet it asked me to upgrade to 1.02.21 and since after that i cannot install the B-RAD upgrade.... the WD player tries to update but is not successful.
@eujeeves Yes only if you already have that firmware on your wdtv live. So if you have 1.02.21 and you want to put 1.02.21 on your wdtv live because something went wrong then yes change it to 1.02.22. If you are putting the new firmware on your wdtv then you don't have to change anything just put it on your hard drive and it will recognize that there is new firmware. Hope that helps.
@roythomasbaker I already had 1.02.21 so I had to change the firmware# in order for my wdtv to recognize a firmware upgrade so you don't have to worry about that, sorry for the confusion. As for the screensaver, its only an image, so any image in .pgn format should work. Screensavers specifically for pc will not work.
Hi. Great tutorial! I noticed however after you plugged in the thumbdrive and performed the hard reboot...@3:21 it confirms the new firmware 1.02.22 was found, but @4:12 after another reboot is shows 1.02.21 firmware still installed. I'm a little confused on this point.
Also, will any screensaver work on the WDTV box? Even ones normally run on a typical windows pc? Thanks!

@garden4ever the firmware will work. Many people have uses it and are very pleased with it. Rolling back to factory is simple also. I haven't in a very long time but I was also skeptical before I did and also looked to see how easy it would be to go back and I know it was easy bit at this sec I don't remember as I'm not next to a PC.

@lafamiliaruiz I'm glad I could help. I had to much background noise when I was doing it so I just went with typing. It's a great unit especially when you have a lot of movies and tv shows. I also use it with my slingbox solo so I can watch the shows anywhere I go (mobile and computer).

Normally everything should work, but I don't see where I have to enable the sheet view;..
The WDLXTV LIVE firmware will not unless its a g2 I believe but not 100% Check out the sites that I showed and look at them there. I do know that they do have custom FW for the G1 and G2 just not sure what they are called or if they are created by the same guy, but they could be :)

I been at this for 3 days now and I just cannot seem to do it...
first of my wdtv live version is 1.04.17_V
My USB is MS-DOS (FAT32)
when I plug in my USB and do a power-Cycle with the 3 files in there it does not find the firmware on my usb stick....
does it need to be reformatted again?? does it matter that it's MS-DOS?
or is it because the version of my wdtv live is higher than the wdtvlive.ver file?
please if you can help that would be great...

All you have to do is change the S00 file, save it and put it back on your flash/jump drive. That's it. You do not need to reinstall the firmware. :)

@laterjongen its going to be in the S00 custom file. you must remove the # sign in the full view and change "std" to "sheet"

but a question to change settings in S00 custom... do I have to reinstall the firmware? or is there an easier/quicker way?

The WDLXTV LIVE firmware will not unless its a g2 I believe but not 100% Check out the sites that I showed and look at them there. I do know that they do have custom FW for the G1 and G2 just not sure what they are called or if they are created by the same guy, but they could be :)
