@FrisbeeJim, it is not a "sidearm". It is actually a "thumber" thrown vertically instead of horizontally. A "sidearm" is the original name applied to what Ultimate players now call a "flick". This throw has been called a "Helicopter" since the mid-seventies.

Helicopter? Haven't heard that name. It's just a sidearm throw with a push upward for freestyle if you use that spin. (If you use the other spin, then a reverse air bounce does the trick). As far as Ultimate, it's got three problems, unless no one is marking you when you huck: compared to a forehand "flick" grip, you lose half a foot of throwing reach, you can't low-release, and you can't switch rapidly to a backhand grip for a fake.

this is a sick throw. i thought it was called a thumb flick, but anyways, when i play ultimate and have to huck 40 yards+ this is my ideal throw

If I put my thumb up against the rim I can't keep it stable when I'm throwing it. If I move my thumb closer to the middle I can more closely replicate the flight pattern I think it should have, but I can't put enough spin on it. Any tips?

put more pressure on your thumb and dig it into the rim of it ... and snap your rist hard and you should have it

That's not a thumber. A thumber flys to a straight direction while this flies on a higher motion that's why it's called a helicopter.
