First saw Graham in 1976 in Cardiff S. Wales backing American all girl band the Runaways!!!!!! It should have been the other way around, he blew them off the stage and he had brass backing him as well. Still playing him today and turning people on to the man that was NUMBER1 on the juke box but nowhere in the charts.LOVE YOUR SONGS BETTER THAN TOM JONES!!!!!!!!!
When I first heard Elvis Costello on the radio, I thought there was a new Graham Parker album! I had discovered GP & the Rumor at a show with Thin Lizzy at a small show in San Diego (I had grown weary of the big arena shows) and as soon as they took the stage, I knew long-haired, bell-bottoms, guitar solo days had ended. I was blown away and remain changed forever. Changed my world. Thanks for everything, Mr. Parker!
"I tried to eat, but, I could not swallow. Mouth got dry and my tongue got hollow." ... lyrics that Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson WISHED they had written!
'Lady Doctor' was played right before this track , but was unreleased. I have this whole concert (incl. lady doctor)on audio and all the video that has been released too. A great show!! UW2
STICK TO ME is still one of my favorite albums.....and impossible to find, beg, steal, borrow, buy....it's easily as important an album as "This Year's Model" by Elvis or "Pure Pop For Now People" by Nick. I agree with you all, it makes no sense this music didn't catch on in the US - I mean, J. Geils was trying to do the same thing in the 70's and people bought it, why not buy it from someone 100 times better??
Love Lady Dr and "call me your doctor both great Turned up too Late - great song. You come to me with eyes all watery, do you believe I'm falling? Poor little thing so out of date Now I can say your love has turned up too late Hey baby I ain't ashamed of being turned down I hope you've got the same strength you're going to need it now Love takes a toll on everyone baby, you're going to find out some day It don't feel too good it don't feel too great To tell you it's turned up too late
great stuff! too bad he never got the US exposure he deserved. i love s.side johnny & all that, but parker & the rumour blow 'em ALL away (well, maybe w/the E street band as the only exception). further proof that skinny white brits can have plenty of soul, too. rock on graham!
Anyone wanting to read a right slagging off of the "Heat Treatment" album ("it's rubbish and apart from 2 or 3 songs, most are clunkers") should read the sleeve notes of the re-issue CD - written by Parker!
I still think it's a great album but it can sometimes be difficult being a Graham Parker fan!
It is a great CD .. sure with a few dubs but the best records POURING IT ALL OUT
THAT'S WHAT THEY ALL SAY
TURNED UP TO LATE AND HEAT TREATMENT are all great tunes and his first Mercury record was even not quit a good but had White Honey, Silly things, you've got to be kidding (so great a song) though I never liked - don't ask me questions, howlin' wind, not if it pleases me , gypsy blood .. that much. SIDE IS MASTERFUL.
(CONT) And Squeezin out Sparks is great. A big DISGRACE THAT THIS GUY WASN'T BIG IN US. AND EVER HEAR BEST OF 1989 - 92 .. SECOND SIDE IS MASTERFUL.
ALONG WITH ELVIS COSTELLO - THEY WERE NEW WAVE period. but it is difficult being a fan .. esp me. everyone l like is overlooked .. THE REPLACEMENTS, LOVE, THE MOVE, MARSHALL CRENSHAW .. THE list is endless so hang in there man.
It's a shame you never get to see "The Brass Monkeys" in close up. Ray - tenor, (The late) Irish - baritone, Chris - trombone and Dick - trumpet. The optional extras that came on and off the stage as and when required but never complained.
Just amazing. Always felt that GP & The Rumour were every bit as brilliant as Springsteen & E Street Band or Southside Johnny & Asbury Jukes. Parker is such a genius songwriter, fabulous singer, and that band was so damn rockin'!
First time i saw Graham Parker & The Rumour they were supporting Ace, saw then quite a few times after that (mainly 'cos i was sure GP was Bob Dylan "incognito"!! Lol!) - one of the best nights ever was seeing them at Oxford with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Dukes! What a night!!
I played Heat Treatment to death and was lucky to see GP and The Rumour live a couple of times back in the late 70s. He has been seriously underated and wrote some great tunes. My favourites though were the two cover versions...the Trammps Hold back the night and the Jackson 5s I want you back (alive!) GP's versions are more than equal to the originals and show what a great singer and musician he is - I am up and dancing and transported back to happier times whenever I hear them.
I bought Heat Treatment , The Album in 1977 and watching this has just persuaded me to by the cd of it. He was definately missed as a major act wasn't he?
Graham Parker kills me. I swear to god, I just want to grab my lap top and run out in the streets and force this down peoples' throats til people finally realize how great he was/is. This is white ass hot intense soul. Heat Treatment indeed.
I was at Blackbushe too - Genesis also on the bill I seem to recall. Best gig I ever saw was earlier that year seeing GP at the Roundhouse supported by Devo and Blondie) and another time at Hammersmith supported by Southside Johnnie.
Burn baby, burn. Was at this gig - front row of balcony. GP+Rumour never failed.

what kind of guitar is the lead guitarist playing? Must KNOW!
jonathanbobonathan 2 years ago
The guitar is a Fender Jaguar, you can tell the difference from a Jazzmaster by the thin single pole pickups,
dm3830 2 years ago
@dm3830 it must be at LEAST based on the jag. but the pick guard and electronics (etc) are more elaborate than even the jaguar. hm.
