I was in this as an Alto II. I love to sing in choirs and I will be in the BYU Singers and I attend BYU-Idaho this year. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT CHOIRS IN THE WORLD. and they are all wonderful. The best part is having an open heart and an open mind. Close your eyes and just LISTEN! not only to the wonderful music but to what the Spirit tells you. And I know that there will be a lot of people bashing this comment. But you have to stand for what you believe. even if youre the only one standing.
I've listened to this about a zillion times now. My college choir is doing this song and we have octet checks on it today. You guys do really great on it!
im a conductor in ireland and i love to listen to the all state american choirs!!! they are all fantastic!! but then when i read the comments underneath, i cant believe it!! your all so bitchy, and critical to each other and so immature that i think none of you should be allowed on this site. your alll lowering the whole site by your stupid comments!! i would imagine that most of you wouldnt know a b minor chord from a good fart!!!!!
Doesn't it seem like this sort of contention shouldn't exist in the world of music? I think only shallow, insecure children who have an extreme lack in maturity would contend so heavily over the performance of a piece. I expect this in the world of sports, not in something as sacred and universally loved as music.
then my freshmen year in college 1 of 48 singers and 5 bass 2's to make the National ACDA Collegiate Honor Choir also out of those 48 singers 10 ppl from Texas!!! Texas is the best and will always reign in the all-state world of music!!!
wow those girls r so whinny and vowels r so spread..... The doo's were too legato and under-pitch ...hell the whole piece dragged along!!! IcyVein906 next time you insult the best all-state in the USA clean out ur ears and listen to the choir which ur saying is way better one more good hard listen bc wow u were wrong! like iluvmybeenie said that hall really helped yall out or else it would have been so much worse. BTW I was in the 2008 TEXAS Mixed choir recording 1st chair bass 2
@BstGuy18 DICKHEADS like you shouldnt b allowed to comment on a choir like this. unfortunately 90% of people in choirs think they know more than they actually do!!! A lot even think they know more than their Musical Directors. This is a global thing unfortunately, not just USA as its in Ireland too where I live. Its just a pity that DICKHEADS like you make such inappropriate comments. Im a female 52 year old Musical director from Ireland.
@BstGuy18 Texas the best all-state in the U.S., how arrogant. Every group is different from year to year...your last one left a lot to be desired I dare say. Also, you have to listen to the entire performance. TMEA did this in a completely classical style and didn't pay any heed to the subtleties Moses Hogan left behind. That said, altos in this needed more soul. Your sopranos, dear god, need to go see a black woman about how to sing a spiritual really... Other than that, rivals forever.
I would have to say that the New Jersey All-State Chorus is stronger, because the Basses are more powerful, have a full sound and balance out the chords in a truly harmonious manner. The voice of the Altos and Sopranos sound celestial, and the Tenors are able to help the compelling melodies stand out.
The stomping at 1:08 echoes throughout the Hall giving a thunder-like force to the dark, rich tone of the chords, and the voices dragging the song a little makes the song much stronger overall.
The women sound like girls. They have no power or conviction in their voice. It just doesn't fit for a black spiritual piece. That being said, this is the best version on Youtube.
at 49/50 seconds i just shut it off completely. Vowels are relaxed, sounds like you guys are trudging through mud to fight for energy. To the guy who said the TMEA version was bad. Seriously you need to get your ears checked. Our energy outdid yours by 100 fold.
I love the basses. I just wish they'd all been a year older to make the earth shake on those first few phrases. 10/5 performance. I can't wait for this year. I made it :)
@Icyveins906 I ordered my CD right after the concert, which was in November. So I'm not sure if they're still selling them... I guess you could just rip the mp3 from the video if you want. Google "youtube to mp3" and use the first site that comes up. Good luck with your video!
This song was the most locked out of all the songs this year. The women rang and sailed like true angels. There was 0 overbalance anywhere. I would have liked to hear more of the tenor II to make some of the chords "ring" Yes, it does not have to be barbershop to get an overtone. If you were in the concert hall for this 2 rows from the front, the sound bounced off every wall straight onto you it was amazing. Phenominal performance I envy you guys.
Yeah I definitely remember you... we had a convo about marching band. And haha the accompanist is from my school, she's one that you either love or hate.
@xXinsanity92Xx I do play piano. I was the one who played Don't Stop Believin' and the accompanist told me to get off the piano. I also played a bunch of Final Fantasy tunes on it.
I REMEMBER THIS, BEST MEMORIES, peep the tenors haha

@BstGuy18 Texas has a decent All-State program, but NJ will always be the best. So we'll just have to agree to disagree. =)

I think your hall that you sang in did you all alot of justice, would love to hear it in a hall without so much reverb. Covered alot of the problems.
