  • Tell me if this will fuck up my chances of taming my mouse...

I couldn't help, and try to pick up the little mouse. I didn't pick him up by his tail, but i grabbed the base of it, lifted her up, and put her on my hand, and she ran I let go because i thought you was gonna get her tail ripped off.

  • My 2 rats are quite social, i was surprised, they aren't scared if i come near the cage, and always lick my fingers and they let me play with them inside the cage, but if i try to take them out they freak out, i want them to walk around like my chinchillas do, what im doing now is, i let the door open and put my hands so they come, sometimes they do and climb on my shoulder or belly and lick my face then they run in the cage, not sure if what im doing is right. :S.

  • @sticky2208 the yoghurt trick worked really nicely. Managed to get both of my boys to eat yoghurt off the spoon.. But about 10 minutes ago I put my hand in with the spoon, and instead of going for the yoghurt, one of the rats jumped at my hand and bit me quite badly :( Been bleeding for around 10 minutes.. I'll keep trying this method though and i'll let you know how it goes.

  • @sticky2208 I adopted two 20 week old male rats today, they're very jumpy and I don't think the place I got them from really handled them because they run and hide whenever I so much as go near their cage. I managed to get one of them to sniff my hand earlier but when I touched him he squeaked really loudly and ran away. I was just wondering seeing as they're both fully grown now, whether this method would work on them? Thank you :)

  • @kaylasunnie Hey :) Sounds like these rats just need some patience and a gentle hand :) Try these steps with them! The sqeaking and running away sounds like he was scared, try step 1 for a while with them both :) Please let me know how it goes! I know of lots of people that have turned scared rats round so there is still hope for them!

  • I remember one of my first of my two rats, Noel. I got her and Sparky on December 26th 2010. Noel eventually passed on August 28, 2011, unfortunatly that was my birthday. Sparky is still with me and I have a new baby named Mally. Although she's not the same as Noel, calm and snuggly, I still love her. I will never forget my Noel, and neither will Sparky. She passed young. RIP Noel, I love you

  • @RatColonyCare aww :( always sad when they pass on! I lost 7 of mine all close to each other :( Hope Sparky is doing well with Mally! :)

  • they sell the yogart at my school

  • i wish rats lived as long as we do then we would never have a gut feelin in our stomach that it was all our fault for them dieing but its not our fault its not no ones fault well enless u know you feed it to stuff i wishi could say more but my rat shadow needs me more then i need her

  • @code6665 pick katniss and primrose!!

  • i just bought 2 rats today ( 2 girls) they are so fking cute:P i was wondering DOES ANYONE KNO X2 FEMALE RATS NAME ...i cant think of any :D

  • Whenever I have to get a new animal used to me, I always try to avoid using food. I don´t want to be associated with being just a food source, I want them to respect ME and not my food. My method takes longer but I believe it forms a better bond in the long term...

  • Love the music

  • The music is hypnotic. Thanks for uploading your cute rat!

  • one of my rats ( sushi ) she will come right up 2 u and i just got here last nigth at the pet shop but then my other rat ( cookie ) is very shy and she will run from every one and she comeing n takes dyed bananas from me only once a day???? and idk all about rats just yet cause i am 10 so yeah need help

  • i have a question for you. i have brought three new baby girl rats ruffly 10 weeks old (from a petshop) they are very timid, nervous and shy. im trying to tame them now but im struggling with the process. or though it is early days for them as ive only had them for under a wee and they have gone through a lot in a couple of days.

either way im struggling to get them to trust me. sometimes they will take food from my hands (this is rare) and sometimes they wont. not sure what to do any ideas?

  • I remember my first rat :) Her name was Gabbi Loved her soo much. Woke up one morning to her still 'sleeping' when normally awake before me ready for her food. R.I.P My baby :'(

  • @flyyergirl aww :( its awful when we lose them! really nice that she went in her sleep though! its the best way :) i lost the two boys in the video not so long ago and they both just went to sleep :) sorry for your loss x

  • I thought rats were lactose intolerant?? I don't think yogurt is a good idea =(

  • is that natural yoghurt or one with taste like from the grocery store?

  • hya i am trying to bond with my rat,i adopted himfrom a friend who didnt care about him and never tried to tame him.

the rat is around 7-8 months old now and does like to bite, my friend got nipped and always pulled away so now he bites if i put my hand in the cage.

whats the best type of yogart to use and do you have any suggestions on how i can bondwith him without getting bitten or do u think he is to old to try bind with him?

also do you have any tips on introducting him to a new friend?

  • @sazzal1990 Hello! Aww lovely that you adopted him :) There is still hope for him! will just require patience :) Try this step with him and see what happens, You can use baby food ( they love it! ) instead of yogurt. Please keep me updated! I will link a really good intro video to you in private message! but if you require any further help just PM me.

  • @sticky2208 I just got a girl rat today. I was wondering what kind of yogurt do i use? she is tame but a little skittish. (i know they need a friend, my brothers friend gave him a girl rat, my brother does not want her, so he just handed her to me.) She is small, and young. I dont know if that makes a diff. Thanks for any and all help!

  • @AnimalGirl328 you can use natural yogurt or baby food! :) I would say go with baby food more though as they love it and it contains lots of healthy ingreadients! Make sure you introduce the 2 rats properly too! you can find a wonderful video here on youtube on how to do it! :) Hope everything goes well, Message me if you need anything! :)

  • can i give my rats a yogurt that can i buy in the grocery stores?

  • hope i can do what you have done .. so that i can now work on the next level in that is to teach them tricks ..

  • Are Leo and Leeroy the rats in this video? Sorry to hear they are at the bridge.. T_T

  • @DefeatedDreamer Yes they are :( I found Leeroy at the bottom of the cage a couple of week ago, not a clue what happened to him as he was perfectly healthy! and Leo i also found at the bottom of the cage a couple of days ago, I knew he was ill but didnt expect him to be gone so soon! he had HLD ( his back end was going) :(

Thank you for your kind words! :)

  • this music is depressing

  • @reptofreak4 Youtube has a mute button - use it :)

  • my rat only eats cheese out of my hand, but i dont want to give him too much cuz then he will get fat. he also likes nuts and seeds, but too much of those will make him fat too!! my rat is a fatass lol

  • i did this step and my rat is a little baby and hes scared, i gave him chese and veggies...to try for him to get out of his house, i took him and i put him back and he runned in is cage!...What do i do..? Please someone help mee!!

  • @StyleShawn Try this step! just be patient and hold the spoon in his cage untill he comes to it ( rats are curious animals he will come out eventually to see what it is ) Also you may want to think of getting him a friend ( providing you introduce them properly) rats are very social animals and they do need company.

  • @sticky2208

    thx for the help.

    to everyone:SUBSCRIBE

  • so THATS the difference between a spoon and fork...

  • @Luffa9876 Lol! Glad I was able to teach you that :)

  • EL MUSICA! It kills my ears! (if thats possible?)

  • thanks for showing me what a spoon looks like :P

  • @74rocknnight47 hehehe see! you learn something new everyday :D

  • omg thanks for this its ratzrulesok from the fancy rat site will be using your advice and awesome video.

  • @Arachnaphillic Really happy that you will be trying these! :) i really love looking back on these vids! amazing to see how my boys was when i first got them and how they are now! ( alot smaller here too lol) Hope everything goes well for you and if you need anything just pm me on here or FR :)

  • @sticky2208 yeah they are doing well with it I found a old pink robe is their fave to climb on so they come out on that alot.

  • The problem with getting a rat (or rats) from a pet store is that they are not worked with on a daily basis, only to be removed (by their tail which can hurt them, mind you) for the cleaning of the cage. They are not held and cuddled like they should be (this is true of most pet stores, but some are different).

Because I own a rattery and work with my pups on a daily basis from birth, they are used to human contact and don't need this sort of training.

  • @littlesqueakersrats I agree with this :) If only others would! they support the pet shop industry without even thinking however they dont realise whats behind them! something which deeply disturbed me... rodent farms! the way the animals are treated is disgusting and buying from pet shops allows this to continue. however these video's are infact made to prevent things like picking rats up by tails, many new owners do it thinking that its ok. Nice that you own a rattery! where are you based?

  • @sticky2208 I am in Forest Lake, MN.

  • @sticky2208 Check out my channel, for some reason I can't post my website here, just Google Little Squeakers Rattery.

  • @littlesqueakersrats What a lovely site! You have some beautiful rats! I can see you put alot of effort in when it comes to breeding and caring for your rats, your rat room is amazing too!

Thank you very much for featuring my video's on your site.

  • @sticky2208 I have added a link to my profile too!

Hope you dont mind, may encorage others to stop buying from petsmart.

  • @sticky2208 No problem! And thank you for teaching new rat owners how to train their new rats (even if they are from pet stores).

  • @sticky2208 No problem! And thank you for teaching new rat owners how to train their new rats (even if they are from pet stores). The more people in MN that know about me, the better for the rats! STOP BUYING FROM PETSMART AND PETCO!

  • @littlesqueakersrats do you know how to train rats from pet stores? i rescued a pair of rats from someone who was gonna give them to a shelter because she culdnt bring them to college with her and they are from a pet store. my new babies are adorable and all but they are very nippy and dont come to me much... can you help me? :)

  • @likerofcheez This video (above) is the best I've seen about training pet shop rats. I don't have this problem as I raise all my own pups from birth.

  • @sticky2208 I''m in central Minnesota.

  • WELL CRAP i broke the first rule

  • please answer iv got a rat but hes almost a year old and i dont realy know how to tame him. got any ideas? hes very jumpy and hes got realy sharp teeth and escaped when hes been outside twice. i am scared when ever he comes near the door when its open. iv had him scince he was one month old. PLEASE HELP!

  • @spudnick160 Sorry ive taken so long to reply! ok i suggest the next time he comes near the door you leave your hand next to the door so he can smell you and interact with you, he should be fine aslong as you dont move suddenly, seems your going to have to take it slow with him :) Try this step too and see what happens! if your using a spoon he cant bite you! lol

  • @sticky2208 thank you i will definantly try it

  • I bought two albino dumbo rats two days ago, but I am a little concerned. They don't seem to be settling as well as I hoped am I doing something wrong to make them nervous, or is it still early days and will they settle in time? They are only babies at the moment.

  • @linda43able Hello :)

What do you mean by not settleing in? what are they doing to make you think that? :)

I think it varys for every rat, ive had some that a letting me hold them on the 2nd day and then others that take weeks to come round. However my Albino's seem to be a little more fragile in my personal experience, think thats down to thier eye sight more than anything but they should come round in time :) please let me know how you get on.

  • @sticky2208 Hi,

Thanks for your answer. It's like I explained in my last private message to you. When I try to handle them, they run into the tube that I bought them. It is like they are still scared of me. Am I right in saying that it is still early days yet and just be patient? They do sniff me alot and take food from my hand when it is offered to them.

  • @linda43able it is early days yes :) From what you have said in your private messages you are doing great! taking food from your hand is a sign they trust you even if only a little so keep at it! however from what your message said i think they have settled in fine now :) Cant wait to see pictures of Tom & Jerry they sound lovely!

  • what type of rats do you have? :D

  • is it 2 late 2 start over with the wait till 2 days. What happens if you hold your rat to early, can it screw it up

  • @Nintendogsfreak11 It depends on how your rat reacted when you held it :)

2 days is only there to let your rat settle in to the cage but i have held some of my rats on the same day they moved in! all depends on how the rats are i guess.

How was your rats after you had held them? did they freeze or squirm?

  • Rats are not dirty, don't judge they or try to make fights about them on the internet, you're wasting your time. No one is going to change their minds about how they think about them because of your nasty comments. They are really misjudged animals, and they are really great pets, lots of fun. If you have a pet rat, you won't get any illness and chances are they won't get sick either. It's just like having a small pet dog.

  • If you would now how to treat a rat then why did u gave such a small cage. Rats need to climb so a birdcage would be better then glas!

  • @MightyMadDuck Please Read the video description..... my boys was in this cage as they had just been neutered, a wired cage would of possibly hurt them. They was in this until they healed up and are now living in a cage large enough for 12 rats.

Thanks for your concerns however please read the descriptions before making comments!

  • @sticky2208 Ok sry for being so rude. And i will read description next time

  • @MightyMadDuck Not really. if the rats feet ever gets stuck in the bars it can hurt it badly, and if they climb on the bars it can also hurt after

  • @MightyMadDuck Not really. If the rats feet gets stuck in the bars it can hurt itself, and if it stays to long on it it can also hurt its feet. There are other things to get a rat to climb, than a wire cage

  • this is the best video from all rats videos !!! Every thing you say is right !!I love your vid!!!

  • this is exactly like training a fat kid :S x

  • nice video either thats a really small rat at 1:24 or is that just a really big ball?

  • @MsGymnast4life Lol Leo and Leeroy was very small when i got them but it is also a big ball lol Nowdays the boys and the ball are around the same size! hehe :)

  • @sticky2208 if you have a pet rat how can you put up mouse traps? or do you just not need any?

  • @ruzzzler I do not need mouse traps :)

If i did have mice i wouldnt use traps anyways though lol

  • @MsGymnast4life its both

  • First time I've ever had a pet rat, just got her this morning. She's absolutely terrified, and understandably so, having lived in Petco and now being watched by me. I'm trying to kind of leave her alone, but she doesn't seem to even bother drinking or eating. Is this a bad thing? Do rats not eat/drink particularly much? I'd appreciate advice.

  • @Dextear Hey :) Ok well the first day she may be scared to go near anything, you should monitor how much food your putting into her bowl and then you can see if she has eaten any, also do this with water if you can, Did you only get the 1 rat? :( You should really have atleast 2, rats are very social animals! they love to snuggle up and groom each other, play etc. i really hope she is eating/ drinking today please let me know, you may also want to consider getting her a friend!

  • @sticky2208 Thus far, only one. First rat I've ever had. Knew it was a bad idea in advance, but I didn't want to be responsible for killing two rats if I seriously fucked-up. Going to try a cagemate within the next few days, if you think introducing both around the same time would be a good idea. I've heard "established" or resident rats can get territorial, but what if they're both new? And Lily did eat and drink some last night; probably because the house is so loud.

  • @Dextear aww lily what a beautiful name for her :) its highly unlikely that you will kill them, aslong as intro's are done with patience and care they usually go fine, putting a new rat straight into lily's cage would be a bad idea but intro's are simple and are lovely to watch :) I can send you some detailed info on intro's if you like? I imagine lily will all ready be terriorial over her cage or atleat she will be by the time you get a new rat, so glad she has eaten!

  • I enjoyed your video. I am taking care of my sons 2 rats while he is away during the week working. They are 4 months old, I let them on my shoulder but am nervous to putting them on the ground or table in fear they will run away because they are fast. They are so adorable, never in my life would I have thought they would make such a great pet. They do come to me and know my voice, any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

  • @Brandy969 Aww lovely to hear your enjoying them so much :) You could put them onto your sofa or bed to run around? whilst watching them, if you shut doors in the room aswell then it shouldnt be hard to get them back if they do run off, just rattle a treat packet or call them :) The 2 rats will be careful when attempting to jump off things aswell :) You will most likely be able to tell if they are going to. Hope this helps! please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions

  • I tryed the yoghurt thing with my new rats last night. It's working with Nitro, but Thunder just can't understand why she can't grab it and run! LOL!!! Thanks for the tips!

  • Nice video! Would have been great if I had known this when I got my first rat. Now i'm just nervous about getting another little guy. Any advice for the intro? Btw loved the music whats it called?

  • @deprivedshadow The song is River Flows in You by Yiruma :)

I'll send you a private mail on intro's :) will be too long to fit in here :)

  • Hello!

I've got 2 pet rats there both almost a year old. but when i put my hand in the cage they lick it but when i try to pick them up gently they run away fast to a place where i can't reach them... do you know what i can do to stop that?

    thank you very much!

    xx

  • hey there, i just got a pet rat 2 days ago hes really friendly he nibbles on my fingers n licks my ears when hes on my sholder and nibbles on my chin sometimes too hes a cool little guy but once i set him on a table he explors and when i try to pick him up he trys to get away i dont know why but it seems like hes use to my voice when i call hm he comes to the cage door and doesnt mind resting in my arms but when hes away from me like i said on the table he seems skittish any advice?

  • @PinePicker87 Rats are Curious about everything :) Your best bet is to let him explore, just keep an eye on him whilst he is out. You can try and use treats to retrive him, mine respond to a rattleing packet, once he gets used to the enviroment his eagerness to explore will calm down a bit and he is acting skittish because its all new to him that will soon pass once he has settled more :)

  • I have 2 new female rats, I got them about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I've never had rats, only hamsters (since I was very young). I never realised how great these animals could be. They show so much love and affection, compared to hamsters. You are their guardian, they are children. The music was actually quite touching for me after thinking the short life span of rats, and their bad press. They are such beautiful, clean and obedient animals and I think many people know that. Thankyou, for the videos. :)

  • shamrock you go suck eggs

  • Hey xxangelictonesxx, Congrats on the new additions :) ill link you a video to your private inbox on how to go about introductions... if you have any further questions please feel free to contact me :)

  • Well if you opened your mind a little bit, instead of been judgemental about them then maybe you would see why, Plus it is my own right to keep rats in my own house, I sleep right next to my rats and i manage pretty fine... but thanks for your concerns... if you dont like rats then please do not look :)

  • dude shamrock why dont you be quiet idiot

  • @shamrock422 your a loser

  • I currently have a 1 year old large rat male and I just got a 3 month old male and a 3 month old female to go with my 6 month old female.. how should I introduce them?

  • Great tutorial! But as far as I've learned, rats, like mice, are lactose intolerant (or can get diarrhea). Did you use lactose free yoghurt or what exactly was it? Another 'recipe' for succes is oatmeal with catmilk (how ironic ;) ). Add a little sugar if you want. my mice and rats go completely nuts over this, one whif and they come flying!

  • Aww thats great! :) The taming process is really nice to watch, lovely to see how they progress throughout each step, really strange for me to watch this video back though lol hard to believe my boys where ever like this... hehe

  • Just got my 2 boy rats :D REally cute! but bit scared.. but it is only the second day :D I've done that spoon thing 2 with yoghurt and one of mine loves it :) Comes to the door when He smells it ^^

  • What do they do to make you think they are uncomfortable? and are they girls or boys?

  • I got 2 rats about 2-3 months ago. They are still really unconftable around us. Has anyone got any suggestions???

  • Aww Thank you :) seems only yesterday that i got these 2 boys... They grow up so fast,They are huge now lol but still really cute :) Romaine is a beautiful name by the way, Thanks for your comment :)

  • Just wanted to say how adorable your little rattie is and it's a really sweet video you've made, with all the best advice... your rat looks exactly like my rat Romaine did when he was a baby.. :o)

  • I got the message you left on my channel but no message into my direct inbox, sorry ive taken so long to reply it didnt email me to say you had posted lol

  • Did you manage to find my mail super? there is a mail box at the top of your screen next to your account name click on that and it should be in there, it told me it had sent so you should have it there :)

  • I found that part, but my computer is taking forever to load it. Just in case I should know if there is something wrong with my internet, did you get the message I sent you?

  • Replied to your inbox :) sorry didnt have enough room here

  • Comment removed

  • Could you do the comment in parts? my computer isn't picking up your message. Sorry!

  • Hey, Sticky2208.

I have an adorable fancy rat at my house, and I reeally want to teach him tricks, but he just won't do anything, even since I got him over a year ago. I try to give him treats, but he (I swear this is true) steals them every time I give them to him. I'm concerned about his weight and that he might not be getting the stimulation he needs, he's extraordinarily smart. Please respond ASAP. Thanks!

  • Hey perydwyn,Do they walk onto your Lap on there own? Albino's can sometimes be a little shyer due to there not so good eye sight, When you picked them up, did you grab them from above? or did you scoop them from underneath? Grabbing a rat from above is how a preditor would catch them, unless you have a 100% trusting rat it is best to scoop them, try showing them your hand first and then slowly slide your hand underneath them, let me know how it goes :)

  • I got as pair of adorable albino females 4 days ago and am trying your method...So far they will very briefly sit on my lap before running of in panic. I tried picking one of them up but she screamed and jumped about a foot in the air. Hopefully soon they will get more used to me.

  • Hey Cumgullet88 :) You could try using a whole Carrot and keep hold of it so your ratty just stays and nibbles, that maybe worth a try, instead of giving him little bits of food try a whole carrot and keep hold of one end :) hope this helps :)

  • Hiya my rat hates yogurt! Any suggestions on different options? He likes sprouts, broccoli and carrots! Can I use these the same way? He just snatches them though.

  • Oh and baby food is a no no too, he doesn't like the mushy stuff! Just solids, he struggles to eat the mushy stuff so I stopped after the first go.

  • Aww :) Well good Luck! Please let me know how you and your rats get on and if you need any help/advice please feel free to contact me :)

  • Thank you! I'm bringing two girls home today or tomorrow, so this will be helpful.

  • You can start this at any age, all though it is better to start when the rats are young as it will be easier, I did this with 2 rats from the same litter and just used one spoon but you could use two spoon's if you wanted, i prefer using just one though :)

  • also what if you get two new rats (from the same litter) do you just do the same thing with two spoons?

  • what age should you start this?

  • Aww thank you :) its amazing to see how shy they are on the video and how they are now hehe, the song is called River Flows in You and its by Yiruma

Thanks for your nice comment :)

  • adorable ratties, and the background music is beautiful, what is it??

  • Thanks for your input :) All though there wont be a next time lol Completely understand what your saying but my idea was to explain what to do and then show how it worked out for my rats.

  • Well for your first "How To" video you did alright. the only thing was that there was a lot of reading. maybe try subtitles under videos next time. other than that, this is one of my favorite songs to play on piano. It was also really relaxing to listen to.

Good job! some of the advice really worked!

  • River Flows in You - Yiruma, this is the song apparently, it is really pretty, my rats seem to love it too hehe

  • This song is beautiful...

    What is it?

  • Replied to you inbox Stokies :)

  • thanks. its woking but sum times smudge is sniffing my hand, and bites it

  • thanks i will try and say if it works or not thank you

  • I expect you start stroking them whilst there not looking at you, you most likely are making your rats jump which is why the turn round and jump, it is most likely because they are not expecting it, also make sure you show your hand to your rats before you stroke them and also give them a treat after you have stroked them so they associate your hand with nice things :) hope this helps

  • love da muic

  • hey i need your help my two new rats are ok but when i stroke dem they jump and turn around like dey will bitewat do i do

  • So Glad my video's have been helping you :) and ye just hold it into the cage, if you can fit your hand into it then maybe lower your hand in and hold it whilst in the cage? i would really need to see your cage to explain how is best to do it, but just do this how ever you can whilst ensuring both you and your rattie feel comfortable :) hope this helps a little

  • thank you these videos have been a great help . but the problem is that my rats cage opens from the top and has 2 levels (yeah i have a tank topper :) ) and she never goes up there when im around (the tank topper comes off) should i kind of hold it like a pencil from the end and let it hang??????

  • maybe if you can, put more yogurt( or any food you use) on the edge of the spoon and maybe try to put it thorugh the cage and let your rat know your there,i may not recommend it though because then they will think anything through the cage wwill be edible. so try to move herinto a smaller cage temporarily that opens from the side, and then simply feed her through there

  • can you do this with mice too?

  • hehe sorry i didnt get back to you sooner, but glad someone else knew the name of the song :) it is listed as piano song on my itunes :S so thanks hehe and thanks for your nice comment bellemcr :)

  • Dude! I love that song!

    <3 Yiruma

Great vids by the way :)

  • aww same with my rats, leo is great but leeroy is still a little scared, if you dont have any liquid foods try it with solids all though they may not take it straight away :) i will have to check my pc to see what the song is called, im on a different pc at the moment so i will get back to you on that :) thanks for your comment, and upload some vids of your new ratties :)

  • cool rats, i just got 2 of em today. they a bit older and i dont have liquid food though :( one is ok with me another is scared of everything.

whats the name of the song in this video too? they seem to like it they poked their heads out when they heard it playing.

  • River Flows in You - Yiruma

  • Good luck today Leo and Leeroy :). You're in my thoughts.

  • aww thank you ratsforever :) they are getting alot more confident now and they have names too now hehe leo and leeroy, thanks for you nice comment :)

  • Yes, great job on the video =) Love your rats

  • thanks alot guys :) so glad you like it, and i really hope it can help other people + Ratties :) thanks for your ongoing support, me and the rats send kisses xxx

  • You did so well with this hun. Very well explained i hope people learn alot from this :)

Looking forward to the next steps and seeing lots more of your gorgeous boys and girls :)

  • Really well explained, looking forward to the next steps and seeing more of the boys :). Takes time and patience to get any new rattie tamed to you and i really hope people take note of what you're saying here :). Kisses to the girls and boys :)
