I have only heard the Manson cover of this, and I think I like it more than this one. No disrespect to the original. I guess I'm just used to Manson's version more.
Mteevee had come with cameras to interview those of us at the front of the line (I had arrived 1st--about noon) to get inside a Patti Smith show at Irving Plaza in NY.
They asked me two questions. Had I seen her perform before? Yes. What was my favorite Patti Smith song? This one, which I named.
Never checked, but I seriously doubt I made it to mteevee.
Patti Smith was a great influence especially on text and lyrics of other great artists. It's not for nothing that Neil Young gave a song to Patti. She was more of a trasher and she was a big influence for the punk rock music in it's beginning.
Ok? So.....Why was this song released in 1978? hmm? can you explain that? and if you knew ANYTHING about this group/subject/person(Patti Smith) you would know that Patti Smith is a WOMAN! If you know Marilyn Manson is a man....I mean come on.
When Patti Smith was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame she performed this song right after Aretha Franklin sang "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" and I was sort of uncomfortable watching it. It's just such a virulent word (or we've been made to believe it is).

here's a shock for ya. she's a cracker who can't dance or sing. look at her prancing around on stage. what a joke. I'd like to see her sing this song in front of a black audience. she wouldn't last 2 seconds
John lennon sang woman is the nigger of the world! It has nothing to do race moron and call me a cracker again and I will hunt you down shave your eye brows off, and glue them under you nose, and what do you do that is so great that you can judge!
"If you define niggers as someone whose life style is defined by others, whose opportunities are defined by others, whose role in society is defined by others, then good news! -- You don't have to be black to be a nigger in this society. Most of the people in America are niggers."
One of the best, "piss off" rock songs of all. This song is what true rock and roll is about. Shocking, honest and impossible to ignore. The word nigger is probably shocking to Patti Smith which is why she used it to make her point. We are all in the same boat, despite the color of our skin. In her RnR HOF performance she said Jesus Christ and "Mommy too". Anyone who doesn't get this song needs to learn more about the art and the artist then shut the hell up.
Thanks for knowing what you are talking about. Everyone else needs to pay attention.
This song is about people who are outsiders from the norm. Jackson Pollik, Jesus, Jimi Hendrix,Mother Teresa. Nigger is a word used against black people to mark them as outsiders. She uses the word in the context of everyone who is different is considered a nigger or an outsider. Grow up everyone, turn on your brains and listen to the lyrics.

that was so supremely NOT authorized...I loved it....check out my hide her here or there..love her........in my vids about the tunnel found under my yard
all the years after she wrote this song people still don't get .. society as a whole cannot grasp a white woman trying make people see that this word is just that a word...she uses it in an empowering way...deal with it.
Patti Smith is a serious ARTIST, there has never been anyone else like her, nor will there ever be anyone like her in the ages to come. Female "artists" today are freaks and sideshows; just booty shaking no-talents with a good rack and youth.
Yes of course it's purely racist. Patti Smith is very well known of her racist comments....oops... OR it might be a supporting song for those who travel long term on the edges of rock without recocknition or a hit single
err no its not racist u retard. Patti smith was never known for her racist remarks. She only said it during shows. but is better known for preaching peace.
This song is about being treated like a "nigger"
It is a reference to the old days when black people was commonly called niggers and treated unfair.
R-N-R NIGGER. One of the best live songs to see them perform. It is also one of Beverely's favorite songs. She use to clean the house to it. I love when Patti dedicates the song to her at one of her shows. She rocks it out, just for mommy.
Rest in peace Mrs Smith. As Patti says: "Paths that cross. will cross again." We'll see you then.
In the mean time; Baby, Baby Bab...Was a Rock and roll Nigger! PSG LIVES!

I dont agree with you at all vpjarvi. I think Mariyln made the song more exciting and he made it so people who like his music would like it. And i take offence to the comments about the dull sounding rock band and the naive "FUCK YOU". Theres alot more to his music than just that (and his band is really good). Just because its too harsh for you, doesn't mean its bad.
makes you want to grab onto life? i dont really see that in her song. And Marilyn's version sure doesn't make me want to numb myself. Its just alot more fun, lol. And i like that he chose a song such as this to remake. If you ask me, Marilyn Mansons version has way more life. Good Job Marilyn!
hell yeah she's alive. she preforms music and poetry regularly. this fall shes doing something at the metropolitan museum of art and every year she does a series of concerts at the bowery ballroom (usually 3 days) on her birthday and new years eve. ita awesome.
Are you talking about Marilyn Manson? That's cool he's introducing his audience to to Patti's stuff. Unfortunately he's an unoriginal plagiarist like Madonna. NOT a visionary like Elvis, John, Dylan, Dusty, Joni or Patti. Or many contemporary (Devandra Banhart, Alison Goldfrapp, Patty Griffin, etc.)others who are visionaries.
o my god people! he writes his own fucking music too. He re-did this song too because he said, in a way, we're all niggers because we are all discriminated against in some way. And if you dont think hes a visionary, you should take a look at the effect hes had on the media, rock n' roll, and society.
Manson's cover turns this anthem of individualism into an anthem of arseholes, and the excess speed of the Manson interpretation makes it sound just boring. In my opinion, Manson's negative outburst isn't just suitable for this song.
You think that couple of childish and naive "FUCK YOU" -shouts and a dull sounding band are the main ingredients of a good rock and roll performance? Rather interesting.
i like manson too, but you should listen to the original studio version of this. you have to keep in mind that shes in her late 50's - 60's now and this is live. find an eary live one or the original studio recording before totally badmouthing it.
also, if MM heard you talking shit about patti smith, he'd be pissed and disapointed with you. she exactly the kind of person that I would expect him to like. and clearly he's a big fan, cause he covered he song. its one thing to be a fan of the music someone makes (you), but its a lot more to like the person behind the music and their beliefs (not you). If you were a true manson fan, you'd follow his lead and at least be curtious to Patti Smith, if not a full fledged fan.
thats fine if thats what you think. there are plenty of covers that i like better than the originals, but you should give some respect to patti for inspiring MM.
but i still think MM would be very sad to see that one of his fans is being so disrespectful to someone who is so monumentally important to rock music and who he is a fan of, the same way you are of him.
Marilyn manson fans such as soad here are the ones i think he would rather not have as fans. Marilyn says that the think he hates most is ignorance and stupidity. I personally like his version more just because it suits my style more. Plus, hes my icon.
and its totally fine to prefer his version. as you do, while also showing due respect to patti smith, who was MM's inspiration. unlike soad here, who seems to be extremely bitter and closed minded.
Aren't you a bit contradictory now? You accuse Patti Smith for writing a pro-discrimination song and after someone corrects your claim, you use the n-word yourself. Stand behind what you're saying, man.
Why is that person dumb for not knowing? You'd have to know the history of Patti Smith to know that, but dumb shits like you spookymax89 assume others are dumb for not knowing. The title does have nigger in it, so no wonder. Plus she's hard to understand anyway.
just saw her end the show in LA @ the Orpheum Theater with this...PATTI SMITH ~ "a ROCK GODDESS" This is what rock n roll is all about right here in this performance...

Skunk001010 4 years ago
This isn't even her most famous song, and if you could pay a little more attention to the lyrics, you'd see what it's all about.

Hessu855 4 years ago
err no its not racist u retard.

Which version has more life? Which one uplifts you more? Which one makes you grab onto life? Which one makes you want to numb yourself?
ozzyscruggs1 4 years ago
makes you want to grab onto life? i dont really see that in her song. And Marilyn's version sure doesn't make me want to numb myself. Its just alot more fun, lol. And i like that he chose a song such as this to remake. If you ask me, Marilyn Mansons version has way more life. Good Job Marilyn!
Torontoleafs14 4 years ago
I like both songs. *shrugs*
Smith and Manson both are provoking artists.
I don't see the cause of all this polarity..

hell yeah she's alive. she preforms music and poetry regularly. this fall shes doing something at the metropolitan museum of art and every year she does a series of concerts at the bowery ballroom (usually 3 days) on her birthday and new years eve. ita awesome.
RuleBritannia52 4 years ago
Are you talking about Marilyn Manson? That's cool he's introducing his audience to to Patti's stuff. Unfortunately he's an unoriginal plagiarist like Madonna. NOT a visionary like Elvis, John, Dylan, Dusty, Joni or Patti. Or many contemporary (Devandra Banhart, Alison Goldfrapp, Patty Griffin, etc.)others who are visionaries.
SkeeterNYC 4 years ago
That's what I was after!
vpjarvi 4 years ago
o my god people! he writes his own fucking music too. He re-did this song too because he said, in a way, we're all niggers because we are all discriminated against in some way. And if you dont think hes a visionary, you should take a look at the effect hes had on the media, rock n' roll, and society.
Torontoleafs14 4 years ago
Elvis didn't write any of his own music. He certainly wasn't a visionary. He borrowed a lot. I'd call him a far bigger plagiarist than Manson.
Manson was pretty unoriginal at times - His act was originally just a big cross between skinny puppy and alice cooper.
But yeah, at least he writes his own lyrics. The lyrics being imo the best aspect of the band (except maybe for Pogo, back when he still was in it).

mansons cover is way bttr this is to gay and slow
soad1327rocks 4 years ago
Manson's cover turns this anthem of individualism into an anthem of arseholes, and the excess speed of the Manson interpretation makes it sound just boring. In my opinion, Manson's negative outburst isn't just suitable for this song.
vpjarvi 4 years ago
actually its still better

You think that couple of childish and naive "FUCK YOU" -shouts and a dull sounding band are the main ingredients of a good rock and roll performance? Rather interesting.

i like manson too, but you should listen to the original studio version of this. you have to keep in mind that shes in her late 50's - 60's now and this is live. find an eary live one or the original studio recording before totally badmouthing it.
RuleBritannia52 4 years ago
idc manson's is better then the original
soad1327rocks 4 years ago
well now your just being a turd. i'm trying to support you as the only other person here who likes manson and you have to be a little shit about it.
RuleBritannia52 4 years ago
also, if MM heard you talking shit about patti smith, he'd be pissed and disapointed with you. she exactly the kind of person that I would expect him to like. and clearly he's a big fan, cause he covered he song. its one thing to be a fan of the music someone makes (you), but its a lot more to like the person behind the music and their beliefs (not you). If you were a true manson fan, you'd follow his lead and at least be curtious to Patti Smith, if not a full fledged fan.
RuleBritannia52 4 years ago
(Spammed by accident, was trying to reply)idc manson still has the best version
soad1327rocks 4 years ago
thats fine if thats what you think. there are plenty of covers that i like better than the originals, but you should give some respect to patti for inspiring MM.
RuleBritannia52 4 years ago
nty i like all the covers manson did from the originals like taimyed love, sweetdreams, this is halloween, this song. and more
he makes the covers way more intresting
soad1327rocks 4 years ago
i totally agree with tainted love.
RuleBritannia52 4 years ago
but i still think MM would be very sad to see that one of his fans is being so disrespectful to someone who is so monumentally important to rock music and who he is a fan of, the same way you are of him.
RuleBritannia52 4 years ago 2
idc manson is still the best on this cover
soad1327rocks 4 years ago
Marilyn manson fans such as soad here are the ones i think he would rather not have as fans. Marilyn says that the think he hates most is ignorance and stupidity. I personally like his version more just because it suits my style more. Plus, hes my icon.
Torontoleafs14 4 years ago
and its totally fine to prefer his version. as you do, while also showing due respect to patti smith, who was MM's inspiration. unlike soad here, who seems to be extremely bitter and closed minded.
