@chittyshevy Usually you only do that if you are coming up. In this case we were trying to hold our breath for as long as possible because we had to get "hit" and then correct ourselves. We did have a safety diver there in case we needed it, as was the case for me at about 2:08 (which was 1) needed because I was hit on an inhale and inhaled some water and 2) this section was sped up for the vid).
You would need to exhale if you were coming up to keep your lungs from expanding too much.

@amoxaphobic I realize no job is perfect, but can you give me some examples of the fun and the crappy parts? I'm trying to decide between a Helicopter pilot for the Marines or a Navy Diver.
@jess1up The negatives are probably the same for both jobs with the exception of one. Mainly, the PMS, the qual cards, the constant maintenance... think of it as a roller coaster - you stand in line for hours for a 30 second ride. But the ride is exhilarating so you stand in line to do it all over again.
The exception is as a pilot, you are the officer in charge. If it were up to me, I would try to go pilot with a diver qualification. =)
@amoxaphobic Just two more questions. What's PMS stand for? Also, how often does a Navy Diver actually get to dive and work under water? If you know any Divers it would be cool if you asked them if all the work was worth it.
@jess1up PMS - Preventative Maintenance System - When someone says they are doing a PM, they are doing the maintenance on an item. A diver is in the water depending on station, duties and jobs that need to be done. I was in the water only 3 or 4 times in a year. Some are in the water every day. However, if I could do it all over again, I would... in a heartbeat. Being a diver (regardless of type) is belonging to a family. You have to do it to understand it. And nothing compares.
@jess1up I have no idea how often welders go under. And the ones that go under the most are the ones with the most work. It's really just the luck of the draw.
@Taz00ifyable I'm not quite sure I agree with this. But, whatever you decide to go for, you should give it your all. Dive school is all a mind game - if you think you can do it, you can. Never quit... never say you wanna quit... never even think quit.
@Rangerleadtheway44 I am sure some do. I think it depends on where you are stationed and what squad or group you're with. I didn't.
Also, the rate is for diver is now DV (they have their own rate). When I went through this school, it was only for SCUBA and it was a collateral duty.
@amoxaphobic What kind of missions would they do if they were to be called for combat? And were can I find more information about them but Navy.com doesn't give me much info
@Rangerleadtheway44 I'm really not sure. Most of the time, the divers were used for search and rescue, ship repair or other trivial issues. It's possible that they would be used for something that inadvertently saw combat, but I don't think they would be sent in strictly for combat. That's more of a seal thing.
The best way to find out information on that would be to talk to a diver trainer or go to a dive locker and ask them. The best people to ask would be those in charge. (NO RECRUITERS)
@KamiKazeBliss Mmm... Why? This is a Scuba Dive Class, not a SEAL class. And even if it were a SEAL class, there is no harm in showing your face. This video doesn't really say who passed or failed, as most videos don't. And even if you do pass doesn't mean you have any particular duty or ties to anyone else.
the training at 2:13 our diving instructor did this to each of us in our class when we got our basic scuba cert in high school. a lot of people got freaked out about having their masks ripped off and air turned off, but whatever.
The name of the game in US Navy dive school is, just don't quit. I had big guys in my class quit and little guys made it. It just takes a No Quit attitude.
@beatlesplayer97 Someone just asked a similar question yesterday. No, there were no certs needed. Everything was done in this school. @amoxaphobic Are you glad you chose to be a Navy Diver? Where are you at now in your career? How difficult was it?This really interests me, the Navy recruiter says after you retire from the Navy, you can easily get a job as a Marine Biologist or Underwater Photographer.
@CoalKeepsTheLighsOn I am glad that I chose to be a diver. I really enjoyed it. I am no longer in the Navy - I'm actually back in school for an engineering degree. However, if I could do it over again, I would in a heart beat. It was challenging, but a blast!
Don't believe everything the recruiter tells you. Photographer, sure... maybe even a welder (if you get that school in the Navy)... Marine biologist? I;m pretty sure you need more schooling that the Navy can give for that (Biology Degree).
@CoalKeepsTheLighsOn My primary duty wasn't a diver. When it was time to reenlist, I had a dickhead captain and wasn't about to tie myself to him for another 3 years. I asked to become strictly a diver and got rejected. So I got out.
Sometimes I wish I hadn't gotten out. But thinking back on it, I am not sure I would change one bit... before, during or after.
@amoxaphobic I'm actually in welding school right now so I think Navy Diver would be a good choice, but I want some more info from actual divers that know what it's like and what to expect out of it.
ok so here is my question i am a recent grad of college i now want to go to ocs and them become a ND. do I have a better chance being an officer into getting in the school than an enlisted?
@edsalt7 I'm not really sure, but I am going to go with no. Usually, enlisted are the divers. The enlisted do need a Diving Officer, but there aren't many officers in comparison to the enlisted divers.
I don't think it would hurt to try, but I don't think you have a better chance as an officer. IMO
What do you think the average PST scores is for those who get accepted? and when you go up to MEPS do you swear in as ND or a non-special warfare rate?
@BlackOpsStevo The rules have changed since I was in. I am not sure what the average is, but I think you have to pass the PST before they accept you... that or you have to get really close.
As far as the MEPs thing, I think you sign up as ND now whereas before it ND was a collateral duty and not it's own rate. I think you may have to sign something that says if you fail you'll go to another rate. You really need to ask the recruiters.
@blackbone330 - It's not in boot camp... Navy Diver is now it's own rate and you have to be approved to do that before you even go. I believe your contract will have you as a ND with a backup rate in case you fail out of the school. Don't believe your recruiter if he says you have to "try out" in boot camp.
If you are approved to be a diver, you'll go through boot camp and then go to ND school... so to answer your question, it's after boot camp.
@tjsilvestri - I agree, but it was the best one available (one that fit time and transitions). This was not the song that was originally on the video. Youtube took it off because they said it was copyrighted material.
@oblivionlova23 - Yes, ND (Navy Diver) has this for A school. In fact, I believe they go through more training. What is shown on the video is only the Scuba section.
@divepromichael1 - This was not the original soundtrack. But according to youtube, the original soundtrack violated some copyright laws. So I had to pick a song from the youtube archives that matched as closely as possible while being long enough to cover the video. This was the best I could do.
@23usmc23 - I am not really sure... I don't see why not, but you would really have to discuss that with a recruiter. Doing anything in the Navy is really based off the needs of the Navy, and they are better qualified to answer what positions are open.
It doesn't matter where you live, it matters where you are stationed. Of course, reservists are different. The only two schools I know of are in Pensacola and Pearl Harbor.
@amoxaphobic i was in the marines before, im not sure how the navy does business. i know i should go talk to a recruiter. i live in miami and certified in diving and do it all the time. i would love to be a usn diver. im just not hoping their reserve base is cali or virginia or somethin like that
@23usmc23 - As far as I know, active duty members changing over to reserves do not need to go to basic or to another school as long as you change into the same MOS. You would be stationed at home and do your drill wherever you sign up for.
If you were a diver, then you should be good to go and not have to go to school. Your post would most likely be close to home. If not, I am not sure they send reserves to dive school. The only schools are those I mentioned before.
First, focus on ensuring you know your stuff at RTC Great Lakes. Keep your PT scores high and your nose clean. As for Dive School... Ensure you are VERY comfortable i the water and that you can do plenty of Push-ups, Sit-ups, Flutter Kicks, and Pull-ups. Here's the no-kidding numbers... 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 15 pull-ups, sub-10 minute 500 yard swim, and sub-10 minute 1.5 mile run... You should be able to hit these numbers EVERY TIME. If you can, Dive School will be just fine.
whats up man im a depper too in the navy waiting for bootcamp. im trying to pass the pst though to get reclassed as a diver, but havent taken it yet. how was it?
@FutureNavyDiver Be ready to make swimming and water your life. Train hard they want the best of the best not some wimps. Also be careful on how you perform. You must not show any sign of weakness. AT ALL.
I'm in my last year at the Citadel and i just got accepted into Nuke Power School in Charleston--I have heard that I can apply to go to dive school before I start classes there and I was wondering exactly what school they would send me to in order to be a dive-qualified officer on a sub? Do you know where i can find the start and complete dates for this training? Thanks!
As far as I know, in order to be the dive officer on a submarine, you just need to go to SCUBA school, as that's all they do. All other divers will be an actual dive group at that base.
Not sure about the application process, or the dates. I don't see why you couldn't apply, but it may be hard to actually get accepted. It's all based on the needs of the Navy, as you know.
Check out the Naval Dive Salvage Training Center Website (just Google it). All class convening/graduation dates are listed there. Do it! It's just a nice way to get paid to P.T. while awaiting Nuke school.
I have looked up everywhere for more info in navy diving. I am considering joining but I want to know EXACTLY what Ill be doing... What are your main jobs as a navy diver. Do you live a normal day still, after you complete all the training. AND the most important one, Does all the training count on your "4" 8 years singup or does that start after your graduate everything. And how is pay, and what do you plan on doing after the navy. work wise.
Hey man the Navy Dave program is close to the Sepcial Warfare Program that the Seals and all those other Specail forced go threw. You can be part of a Seal Team an EOD team an board a Ship or repair and welding and all that types of duties. It all depends on the type of duty you get selected for after you graduate the school if you do. Make sure your ASVAB score is high enough. I am a rescue swimmer in the navy so i work with Divers pretty often when on deplyment.
whats the ASVAB score required to be a rescue swimmer? i got a 61 as overall grade on my asvab. do u think that's good enough for the rescue swimmer program?
I got out of active duty 6 months ago to go to college as an early out program but I have nothing but swim, and workout now I am getting my open water certification as a PE credit but I want to go back to active duty and reclassify as an ND instead of being an MA any suggestions
Same as all the rest really - practice negatives and run a lot. Will going back in be easy? I don't know how that works, but I thought taking an early out option made it harder to come back in.
Okay, so you passed the prerequisites to get into the school and were accepted. Congrats. But that's just the start.
Book camp is something like 9-13 weeks depending on when you start and how long your in process is. Dive school is 6-7 weeks. Negatives - blow out all your air and hold. Get 1+ min and you'll be good.
Oh yeah, and practice the laws of diving. You should be able to google them.
like i sigh with the navy havent left for bootcamp yet but i passed my swim and all that stuff so what are negatives but i run about 3 miles a day at a 630 pace so any more advice
Do you mean you were just accepted for the dive school? Because I am pretty sure they don't let you go into the school without going to boot camp, and you don't make diver without going to the school.
how well do you have to be able to swim coming into dive school? I saw the dive school physical requirements and the swim time seems a little difficult. I guess what im asking is do they train you to swim? would it be difficult to pass the course coming in with weak swimming skills?
You actually don't have to be an avid swimmer. Good swim techniques will help you, and practice will help that. They will not teach you how to swim, but they will make sure you get enough practice that by the final test, you should be prepared.
Of course, practice on your own doesn't hurt either.
You would have to take the tanks off and untangle the knots.
Breath holds increase with time. It's amazing how long you can hold your breath when you put your mind to it. Of course, exercise, not smoking and lots of practice doesn't hurt.
I've done both. (Both free through my instructors). It depends completely on your instructor. The NAUI isntructor I had was a peice of cake and the PADI one was bruital. Academics are one thing but the skill assessment is the test. Just saying.
this is a military diving school. i'm a rescue padi diver. i dont like at all how you teach to go underwater, cause it s dangerous make terrorism in a pool to a young diver. than i can see that in the see your class moves their arms a lot and they breath so quickly. so they are not so good divers. so i prefere make normal courses where a young diver can learn to dive with calm and he does the exercices softly and gradualty. so pay attention how your guys are under water. bye
There will be a test in which you must swim a pretty good distance in a certain time. They will do this test over and over again (about 3+ times a week) until the real test, to get you more prepared. I am not sure what you consider fast, but it's a pretty good pace.
Thanks for the Video shipmate. I went through the program in1991...I had fun believe it or not; even though I drowned once; not kidding. The instructor (sharks)gave me mouth-to-mouth and made me do it again; I was scared...but I made it. They used to beat us up pretty good back then, how about now??
It wasn't too bad. I'd like to think it's about the same, but with all the rules and regulations they have today, I have to say that it was prolly a bit more tough back then.
hey do you have to be certified in diving before you join because i took an APFT test and i scored a 300 plus but will that get me in diving school for the navy. i can pass all the physical requirements, i just need to know if it is a really hard school to get in. thanks!
No you do not have to be certified before hand. Getting to go to dive school is usually based on the needs of the Navy.
If you can pass the physical requirement and you have enough intelligence and common sense to not kill someone, then you should be able to pass. It's tough, but not impossible.
i was in greek diving navy school i saw the video and my mind weaked up bad and good memories i had in the school,at last i thing that it played important role in my life
Thanks for the video. I'll bet, although I could be wrong, that Navy Divers accepted into BUD/S do fairly well given the strong emphasis on swimming and pool work....especially during Phase II of BUD/S.
There was a guy that was in charge of the camera work. He was the same guy that was in charge of all the gear. Semi-Instructor, but I don't know his real position there.
Wow.. You are so strong and that takes dedication.. I admire your skills. I love the water my self, I think that I could really learn alot from the navy. Thanks for sharring your video scotty, you look great! Im so proud of you!
The purpose is to teach you not to panic. A lot of things can happen underwater. If you freak out when something like this happens, then you lose your air much faster and can create a dangerous situation for yourself. Remaining calm and being able to recover are key attributes to being a good diver.
The hits usually last anywhere from 20-45 seconds. Add the time that you have to recover and you might be looking at anything from 30 seconds to 2+ minutes. But the training prepares you for this.
right now im trying to get into the navy diving school begging my command. but apparently you guys rarely accept coasties. is this true? because ive been begging my command for 2 years
im signed up to be a diver and leave for bootcamp in the fall what would u recommend to get a jump start to help get ready for those first three weeks
I tell everyone this - make sure you are in shape... running helps with this. I also strongly suggest practicing negatives (blow all your air out, then hold it for as long as possible). This helps build your breath hold times... you will need to have a good breath hold time.
I was just wondering, are the first two weeks the hardest? cause that what my platoon sergeant told me, when I told him I wanted to go to dive school? also what are the pt requirements?
Yes, the first 2 weeks are the hardest. 3rd week is pool week and thats when you get to the underwater hits.
The drop rate in the first two weeks is very high, (prolly about 40-50%). Third week has a lower rate, but still drops. After that you're golden. A few still drop after the 3rd week but it's kind of rare.
21 started - 9 finished. That was actually above average.
If you want to do it, do it. Train before and get ready. Once you start, don't quit... give it your all and you'll be fine. It's tough, but they can't take away your birthday.
haha god damn... my friend was a diver in the Navy in the end of Vietnam.. he was also one of the last hard hat teams... but he also uses that phrase... "oh what can they do take away my birthday" hilarious.
No, I was actually a radioman.... but the opportunity presented itself so I took it. But I do think this probably one of the best experiences of the Navy for me and I would do it again in a heart beat.
First song? I think there is only one song... and it's not supposed to be that song. It was a compilation of a few songs, but youtube said that one song (papercut) was copyrighted so I couldn't use it.
So I changed the music to some random song... never heard it before now. LoL. And you're right... I need to change it.
I'll do that when I get more time. Thanks for the comment though. =)
Wow, That looks like it is a dificult class to take. Im proud of you for going through that. I remember you talking about doing it, but never knew you did until I watched that! Its prety cool to see!
Now, if I knew that you were a diver, I would have known about the class. I knew you talked about it when I was with you, but no, I never actually knew you did it.
full respect to our navy and to all our troops i just wanted to say thank you for doing this for our country.

What do you think the average PST scores is for those who get accepted? and when you go up to MEPS do you swear in as ND or a non-special warfare rate?
BlackOpsStevo 1 year ago
@BlackOpsStevo The rules have changed since I was in. I am not sure what the average is, but I think you have to pass the PST before they accept you... that or you have to get really close.
As far as the MEPs thing, I think you sign up as ND now whereas before it ND was a collateral duty and not it's own rate. I think you may have to sign something that says if you fail you'll go to another rate. You really need to ask the recruiters.

Hey my goal is to become a navy diver and i want to know how to achieve it, do i go to
scuba class while im at boot camp or is this all right after the boot camp
blackbone330 1 year ago
@blackbone330 - It's not in boot camp... Navy Diver is now it's own rate and you have to be approved to do that before you even go. I believe your contract will have you as a ND with a backup rate in case you fail out of the school. Don't believe your recruiter if he says you have to "try out" in boot camp.
If you are approved to be a diver, you'll go through boot camp and then go to ND school... so to answer your question, it's after boot camp.

@divepromichael1 - This was not the original soundtrack. But according to youtube, the original soundtrack violated some copyright laws. So I had to pick a song from the youtube archives that matched as closely as possible while being long enough to cover the video. This was the best I could do.

can you do this as a reserve? where would you have to go if u lived in miami?
23usmc23 1 year ago
@23usmc23 - I am not really sure... I don't see why not, but you would really have to discuss that with a recruiter. Doing anything in the Navy is really based off the needs of the Navy, and they are better qualified to answer what positions are open.
It doesn't matter where you live, it matters where you are stationed. Of course, reservists are different. The only two schools I know of are in Pensacola and Pearl Harbor.
amoxaphobic 1 year ago
@amoxaphobic i was in the marines before, im not sure how the navy does business. i know i should go talk to a recruiter. i live in miami and certified in diving and do it all the time. i would love to be a usn diver. im just not hoping their reserve base is cali or virginia or somethin like that
23usmc23 1 year ago
@23usmc23 - As far as I know, active duty members changing over to reserves do not need to go to basic or to another school as long as you change into the same MOS. You would be stationed at home and do your drill wherever you sign up for.
If you were a diver, then you should be good to go and not have to go to school. Your post would most likely be close to home. If not, I am not sure they send reserves to dive school. The only schools are those I mentioned before.

sergaiey 1 year ago
I just joined the Navy and I can't wait to go to bootcamp and then Dive school. I can't wait. Anyone know what I should expect at dive school?
FutureNavyDiver 2 years ago
First, focus on ensuring you know your stuff at RTC Great Lakes. Keep your PT scores high and your nose clean. As for Dive School... Ensure you are VERY comfortable i the water and that you can do plenty of Push-ups, Sit-ups, Flutter Kicks, and Pull-ups. Here's the no-kidding numbers... 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 15 pull-ups, sub-10 minute 500 yard swim, and sub-10 minute 1.5 mile run... You should be able to hit these numbers EVERY TIME. If you can, Dive School will be just fine.
tripuskas 2 years ago
@tripuskas
these are recommended numbers and not the needed right? I was told 40-50 push-ups/sit-ups, 6 pull ups, and a 1.5 mile in under 13 min.
I just wanna make it more clear, as I'm sure you want to exceed the minimum obviously.
mcgoo721 2 years ago
Yes, these are minimum numbers and yes you want to do your best. Don't go with just the minimum. There is also a swim that you have to do.
amoxaphobic 1 year ago
whats up man im a depper too in the navy waiting for bootcamp. im trying to pass the pst though to get reclassed as a diver, but havent taken it yet. how was it?
in4mant 2 years ago
@FutureNavyDiver Be ready to make swimming and water your life. Train hard they want the best of the best not some wimps. Also be careful on how you perform. You must not show any sign of weakness. AT ALL.

I'm in my last year at the Citadel and i just got accepted into Nuke Power School in Charleston--I have heard that I can apply to go to dive school before I start classes there and I was wondering exactly what school they would send me to in order to be a dive-qualified officer on a sub? Do you know where i can find the start and complete dates for this training? Thanks!
spaldings1 2 years ago
As far as I know, in order to be the dive officer on a submarine, you just need to go to SCUBA school, as that's all they do. All other divers will be an actual dive group at that base.
Not sure about the application process, or the dates. I don't see why you couldn't apply, but it may be hard to actually get accepted. It's all based on the needs of the Navy, as you know.
Sorry, wish I could help more.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
Check out the Naval Dive Salvage Training Center Website (just Google it). All class convening/graduation dates are listed there. Do it! It's just a nice way to get paid to P.T. while awaiting Nuke school.
tripuskas 2 years ago
I have looked up everywhere for more info in navy diving. I am considering joining but I want to know EXACTLY what Ill be doing... What are your main jobs as a navy diver. Do you live a normal day still, after you complete all the training. AND the most important one, Does all the training count on your "4" 8 years singup or does that start after your graduate everything. And how is pay, and what do you plan on doing after the navy. work wise.
NorthwestShredsesh 2 years ago
First, I was a submarine scuba diver, so I am not sure what the day to day activities and duties are.
I will email you the rest...
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
Hey man the Navy Dave program is close to the Sepcial Warfare Program that the Seals and all those other Specail forced go threw. You can be part of a Seal Team an EOD team an board a Ship or repair and welding and all that types of duties. It all depends on the type of duty you get selected for after you graduate the school if you do. Make sure your ASVAB score is high enough. I am a rescue swimmer in the navy so i work with Divers pretty often when on deplyment.

I got out of active duty 6 months ago to go to college as an early out program but I have nothing but swim, and workout now I am getting my open water certification as a PE credit but I want to go back to active duty and reclassify as an ND instead of being an MA any suggestions
otoole420 2 years ago
Same as all the rest really - practice negatives and run a lot. Will going back in be easy? I don't know how that works, but I thought taking an early out option made it harder to come back in.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
and how long is every thing all together not including reagular navy bootcamp
foldfest 2 years ago
Okay, so you passed the prerequisites to get into the school and were accepted. Congrats. But that's just the start.
Book camp is something like 9-13 weeks depending on when you start and how long your in process is. Dive school is 6-7 weeks. Negatives - blow out all your air and hold. Get 1+ min and you'll be good.
Oh yeah, and practice the laws of diving. You should be able to google them.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
sweet thanks man have u been threw it

Dive school is 4-5 months
Dive Prep is about 6-7 weeks

foldfest 2 years ago
Do you mean you were just accepted for the dive school? Because I am pretty sure they don't let you go into the school without going to boot camp, and you don't make diver without going to the school.
Advice? Practice negatives and run a lot.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
what are negatives? and how often should i run a week
Obamadose 2 years ago
Blow out all your air, then hold.
Run about 3-4 times a week.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
how well do you have to be able to swim coming into dive school? I saw the dive school physical requirements and the swim time seems a little difficult. I guess what im asking is do they train you to swim? would it be difficult to pass the course coming in with weak swimming skills?
sjsuPimp 2 years ago
You actually don't have to be an avid swimmer. Good swim techniques will help you, and practice will help that. They will not teach you how to swim, but they will make sure you get enough practice that by the final test, you should be prepared.
Of course, practice on your own doesn't hurt either.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
When your regulator gets wrapped around your tank how are you meant to recover from it? Also how do you hold your breath for so long?
TheBen2213 2 years ago
You would have to take the tanks off and untangle the knots.
Breath holds increase with time. It's amazing how long you can hold your breath when you put your mind to it. Of course, exercise, not smoking and lots of practice doesn't hurt.

Andrewswater, so you're a PADI rescue diver?
Try NAUI Rescue.
PADI == tourist diver.
acenspades 2 years ago
I've done both. (Both free through my instructors). It depends completely on your instructor. The NAUI isntructor I had was a peice of cake and the PADI one was bruital. Academics are one thing but the skill assessment is the test. Just saying.

I was on the SSN 762 as a ships diver. Cut my air, I will end you.
ABitwize 2 years ago
this is a military diving school. i'm a rescue padi diver. i dont like at all how you teach to go underwater, cause it s dangerous make terrorism in a pool to a young diver. than i can see that in the see your class moves their arms a lot and they breath so quickly. so they are not so good divers. so i prefere make normal courses where a young diver can learn to dive with calm and he does the exercices softly and gradualty. so pay attention how your guys are under water. bye
andrewswater 2 years ago
Well thank you for you input.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago

amoxaphobic 2 years ago

I'm a recreational diver but i'm not a fast swimmer (Without fins). Is it a must to be able to swim fast or am I going to be trained to swim faster?
Opt1on 2 years ago
There will be a test in which you must swim a pretty good distance in a certain time. They will do this test over and over again (about 3+ times a week) until the real test, to get you more prepared. I am not sure what you consider fast, but it's a pretty good pace.
However, you do have fins.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
With fast i mean sprinting
Opt1on 2 years ago
You should not be required to sprint for long distances. It's more about endurance.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
Oké thank you

Thanks for the Video shipmate. I went through the program in1991...I had fun believe it or not; even though I drowned once; not kidding. tonyinmiami99 2 years ago
Scary, but props to you for finishing!
It wasn't too bad. I'd like to think it's about the same, but with all the rules and regulations they have today, I have to say that it was prolly a bit more tough back then.

hey do you have to be certified in diving before you join because i took an APFT test and i scored a 300 plus but will that get me in diving school for the navy. i can pass all the physical requirements, i just need to know if it is a really hard school to get in. thanks!
ScubaSt3v31993 2 years ago
No you do not have to be certified before hand. Getting to go to dive school is usually based on the needs of the Navy.
If you can pass the physical requirement and you have enough intelligence and common sense to not kill someone, then you should be able to pass. It's tough, but not impossible.

I see that the instructors basically rip off the breathing app. and mask. What's the purpose of this? How long do they make you go without air?
Mikey78420247 2 years ago
The purpose is to teach you not to panic. A lot of things can happen underwater. If you freak out when something like this happens, then you lose your air much faster and can create a dangerous situation for yourself. Remaining calm and being able to recover are key attributes to being a good diver.
The hits usually last anywhere from 20-45 seconds. Add the time that you have to recover and you might be looking at anything from 30 seconds to 2+ minutes. But the training prepares you for this.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago
right now im trying to get into the navy diving school begging my command. but apparently you guys rarely accept coasties. is this true? because ive been begging my command for 2 years

im signed up to be a diver and leave for bootcamp in the fall what would u recommend to get a jump start to help get ready for those first three weeks
spedoman9090 2 years ago
I tell everyone this - make sure you are in shape... running helps with this. I also strongly suggest practicing negatives (blow all your air out, then hold it for as long as possible). This helps build your breath hold times... you will need to have a good breath hold time.
amoxaphobic 2 years ago

I was just wondering, are the first two weeks the hardest? cause that what my platoon sergeant told me, when I told him I wanted to go to dive school? also what are the pt requirements?
dylanepp 3 years ago
Yes, the first 2 weeks are the hardest. 3rd week is pool week and thats when you get to the underwater hits.
The drop rate in the first two weeks is very high, (prolly about 40-50%). Third week has a lower rate, but still drops. After that you're golden. A few still drop after the 3rd week but it's kind of rare.
amoxaphobic 3 years ago
how many people were in your class and how many made it through? i'm considering this myself.
mattcollins84 3 years ago
21 started - 9 finished. That was actually above average.
If you want to do it, do it. Train before and get ready. Once you start, don't quit... give it your all and you'll be fine. It's tough, but they can't take away your birthday.
