my friend has it for 3 years now and i got to see him go into hypo last night :S it was really scary, i didnt know what to do but to give him sugar.... it never worked cause he took TOO MUCH insulin... it is not a good sight to see.
This is a useless way of treating hypoglycemia. They normally say it is via high insulin reacting to glucose. High protein, low carb diet, medium fat balanced blood sugars, and there is no come down. The other interesting thing is gluten/wheat/milk allergies have shown to damage the pancreas. Dr. Richard Bernstein seems to have done an excellent job and teaching the seriousness of diabetic control, blood sugar control. Doctors treat symptoms and the cause remains and gets worse, it is crazy!
all system is against me. How to live on vegys if food is so expensive? You have to be rich to be ill! Everything is full of white sugar and brown sugar is expensive.
bread is white and black bread is expensive? all system is against ill people...
@Malachai2012 what symptoms do you get with hypoglycemia? How low does your blood sugar become? Is lack of co-ordination, feeling like can't walk right and feeling confused, unable to think?
Everyone has some good posts but this video is from TCOYD "Taking Control of Your Diabetes". Hypoglycemia in a Type 1 diabetic can be deadly. The BS needs to be raised rapidly especially if it is falling rapidly. Dextrose would be the 1st choice because it is so fast acting but the most accessible sugar is what you're going to use. A non-diabetic with hypoglycemia is not going to die from low blood sugar. Your body would get glycogen from your liver to compensate. No so with a Type 1 Diabetic.
I had reactive hypoglycemia, but mine was the result of binge eating disorder and not from pre-diabetes, so I was able to cure mine with seltzer, l-glutamine and branch chain amino acids.
I have reactive hypoglycemia too (weird we are all watching a video about diates) Diabetic hypoglycemia needs sugar to be treated quickly enough, reactice hypoglycemia need proteins. I think hypoglycemics could tolerate some sugar if they eat it after a meal containing enough protein and fat. The problem is eating sugar on a empty stomach. The Insulin Resistacen Siet and Carbohydrate's Addict diet suggests a similar approach: combine protein veggies and carbs in same ratios.
I realize coke or Ike and mike might be a quick fix for low blood sugar, but why not eat something healthy like an apple which doesn't give such a spike in blood sugar?
because you need a big spike when your blood sugar is low, the sooner it raises the better. An apple has fibers and fructose that would prevent a spike
but in this istance I wouldn't be afraid of "white sugar". There's only a reason why "white sugar" is unhealthy, because it floods the blood with excessive sugar, spiking glycemia and causing a lot of problems. But if the spike just bring your blood sugar where it was supposed to be, rather than spiking from a normal level to an extremely high level, then in that instance even "white sugar" has no unhealthy effects and can't be considered unhealthy in a way.
I understand what you saying. I often eat raisins and dates when my blood sugar gets low. I also found carrot celery apple and ginger juice combined can really give me a boost. I was told white sugar lowers ones immune system so I generally try to avoid it. Thanks for the info.
it's that white sugar lowers your immune system, but because it floods your body with excessive glucose and insulin and high glycemic is immuno suppressive, but if your blood sugar is at one moment very low even white sugar can't flood it with glucose just recover your normal blood sugar levels, it's the only time when eating sugar is not that bad... unless you have reactive hypoglycemia then it would cause a rebound effect
I have reactive hypoglycemia. Yesterday, I made a rice pudding with raisins, sugar, ginger, cloves, coconut milk. I tried a portion, and on the next day I felt dizzy, depressed, feeling of crying, and kind of out of it. That is a hypoglycemic reaction to the refined sugar and raisins.
I'm the same way. I have to avoid sugars pretty much completely. It's tuff but you deal with it and make the best of it... If I take sugar, I feel like a guy who's constantly having PMS without the cramps. Usually people don't know what I'm going through...
me too. I just have hypoglycemia as far as I know. Sugars aren't good for me. I tend to have mood swings and random tiredness/lack of thought clarity. I have to work to maintain it properly.
I have never been tested but show all the signs I have also passed out MANY times.on my bike,in a museum gift shop twice in 5 minutes,my kitchen floor, kroger, concrete.
It´s strange this cgm. In sweden we dont have it. ´Well I´ve seen that minimed , but appearently no one can get them yet. I think it is a money question. Can everyone get cgm in America?
If you have Hypoglycemia but are not Diabetic then you either have Reactive Hypoglycemia or Fasting Hypoglycemia. The symptoms are very similar to what a diabetic would go through in hypoglycemic episode. but the treatment of it is different. diabetics take sugar to treat a low. But a reactive or Fasting needs to treat with carbs, fiber, and protein. They casn take sugar for a "quick fix" but must eat immdeiately. Reactives and Fastings will drop suddenly if they only use sugar to treat.
Hugh. well i have reactive I'm pretty sure. But carbs and sugars are rarely the answer for me. they are not even a quick fix. Everything else you said was true in my case but not carbs and sugars. They never really help.

anyone who wants to know more about Hypoglycemia may also find the book "Hypoglycemia for Dummies" useful. it explains how to prevent low blood sugar episodes, fight depression and stay motivated, make it through the work day, help hypoglycemic infants and children etc
It has already been said here before, but eating heavy sweets is the last thing you want to do for hypoglycemia. That just delays your crash for a very brief time period. Fiber and protein take longer to break down and are much healthier.
Good on you for rethinking the issue my friend. I post on these issues because it could actually be dangerous for someone having a hypo if the public don't realise what to do. I understand that you were talking about long term issues though. Good luck with everything.
What about people who don't have Type I or Type II diabetes, who don't ever take insulin? I was just recently diagnose with hypoglycemia and instead of taking insulin I have to carry glucose tablets. It's constant without much symptoms at all.
If you're hypoglycemic, you should not have to take insulin. Insulin lowers your blood sugar. Glucose tablets help to raise your blood sugar and keep from a serious life-threatening drop. I have severe hypoglycemia. I use the glucose tablets when I'm have a bad drop.
You have completely misunderstood this presentation. When someone with diabetes is having a hypo, sugar is the 'only' thing that will help. Don't you understand that we are not talking about 'long term' management here? We're talking about potentially saving someones' life with a quick acting carbohydrate. In these situations protein, fibre and 'complex' carbs would be either useless or not appropriate.
my three year old son is hypogleycemic with no presentable signs hes not diabetic either..he had a seizure at 3mths and found out he had low groth hormone and low sugar and low stress hormone we supplemened him wiht growth hormone and hydro cortisone hes off that now but still on diazoxide for low sugar
But NOW they cud buy a pump which measures insulin AND tests the blood sugar @ the same time!..My friend has it but its quite expensive ..BUT WHO CAREZ!..I can buy it !
me to...don't know what to do... all system is against me.... some say take shugar other don't take shugar cous it is poisen, go vegy.... now did enyone have any good answer on this problem?
I have the same thing. Since I am on a healty low carb diet, I feel much better. I also eat nuts with, such as macadamia or pecannuts since they are low on carbs and high on healthy fats.
I agree! My low carb diet is the only thing that can rid me of hypoglycemia. At first , the first couple of days on my low carb diet I had a lot of symptoms and reactions, but after 3-4 days it was better. I gradually eliminate most carbs and sugar even fruits and now I eat meat and low glycemic vegetables and I have no symptoms of hypoglycemia!! :) But you must eliminate them little by little if its too hard.
hugh. I might have to consider doing that some. I have reactive hypoglycemia. I heard that complex carbs are still good for you. Have you heard similar? None processed complex whole wheat bread etc...
Absolutely! I include them every other day in my diet, I have more energy this way, especially if you exercise. There is a good book by Jay Robb called "The fat burning diet", the author has reactive hypoglycemia and he alternates low carbs days with high carb days ( high carb days are not sugars and and simple carbs but complex carb!) Its great if you don't want to give whole wheat bread and pasta!
