It didn't start with 1 beer bottle! The cops started it all! They invaded in full on riot gear with horses, etc. They started pushing everyone & when I asked what I should do, my van was parked behind their line w all my belongings in it, he told me to shut up & he was arresting me 4 disturbing the peace! Then I got beaten & they ripped my dog from my arms & they threw her. Then came mace in my face, they tore off my shirt ,& draggied me across the concrete, embedding it into my knees & arms.

#1 - this was a police riot. #2 - the phish fans were in the venue, those without tickets were there for the ride, not the music. we've since ditched the dirt surfers as they can't keep up with today's tour schedule. we stopped supporting that element on day 1. we are a much wiser and more responsible community now. morrison seemed a bit smarter too, they let everyone in the lot to keep them out of the small, quaint, beautifully serene town.

My brother was there. He says that the police, who came in with full riot gear from all over the greater Denver metro area, instigated the thing. Morrison is really quite used to a lot of people on concert days (and nights) and many businesses there depend on them for survival. That the police moved like idiots really hurt that town economically. It took 13 years for and a global financial depression for someone to wise up, eh? I love phish... I mean I love them, and don't take this personally, but the "phans" are my least favorite aspect of the band. I love weed, lsd, and whatever else they like to do, but take a shower and wash your hair! At first phans were very considerate (pre 1996 or so). There were many a show with not a single piece of trash that remained afterward. Incredible. Then bums that think they can do whatever they want came on the scene, along with way more phans per show. Couple that with fearful WASP cops that feel they have to "control" the situation at all costs, and you have a fiasco like this. WHEN phish has a reunion, I hope they get good security(what's that? oh just an oz, go on in. Coke? get lost loser).

something got overlooked with this story- the four show run at the rocks SUCKED. these were some of the worst shows I ever saw them play- totally flat. but hey, 96 was a transition year- most shows that year kind of sucked now that i think about it. they made up for it in 97 at the gorge! which, coincidentally, is prettier AND has better sound than red rocks. what a wonderful world!
