  • yeah my friend had to studying world music at the UofM told me that before playing a song on the drums they have to be able to sing the parts, that way they know exactly what to play, it's like memorizing sheet music almost

  • Are you kidding? This is the AWESOME part of YouTube.

  • im in that shit part of youtube again

  • ОХУ...ТЬ!!!!

  • .................IM THE SCATMAN

  • its funny how at some parts it sounds as though they are argueing

  • I've never heard something like this before, interesting

  • @Lanakikuta Louie Armstrong formulated this kind of singing called "Scat Singing" It's awesome....SCAT SINGING, check it out

  • Is it safe to call this complicated scat singing? Does Konnakol mostly happen in groups of 2 or more? There is something Jazz like to it, is it improvised?

  • simply amazing :)

  • mind blowing

  • is this good or bad? the truth is that i've never heard sth like this before... and i like it :)

  • sounds like there talking.....

  • india is a country of poverty they couldnt even afford to buy a basic drumkit

  • @masivekill yeah... you're from the Philippines.. you shouldnt talk shit about other countries and poverty.. Phillippines poverty incidence rate is the same as India's.

Ps. India has 69 billionaires... Phillipines has what 4-5?? hahahah

So what I'm trying to say is... shut the fuck up.

  • @joltfrey As a westerner who has seen first-hand the destruction wrought by globalist capitalism, I wouldn't think either one of you would want to be bragging about whose country has the largest number of corrupt materialist scumbags chasing dollars. India's best legacy, like all nations, is in the contributions made to arts and culture. As a cheap labor resource to outsourcing white-collar criminals in America...well, I wouldn't be bragging about that.

  • @cashberg i'm not indian bro i'm Canadian. my family goes on vacations all the time so i've visited both countries and have developed a sort of a bond with india. it was needless for him to drop that comment on this video, which is what pissed me off more, actually. i totally agree with you on the amount of materialistic money minded scumbags there, however.

  • adi thala rulezzz yeah!!! :P

  • We're learning polyrhythms this way in my rythm class. really interresting and intuitive!

  • i can't believe how does reggeatton exists lol

  • talk about rhythm...lmao

  • I have this dvd...probably the most remarkable music dvd I've ever see, and I've seen a whole lot. The best parts are simply seeing how much Shawn and Jonas get into what they're doing. Its all about the love of it, and nothing else for them. RIP Shawn.

  • rave rave rave, damn emo music

  • genius

  • I've been myself learning the konnakol for the past few years, and I know how much practice it takes... ;)

It's always such a pleasure to listen to you guys! Bravo!

    Cheers,

    Raphaëlle Brochet

  • i'm learning basics of this tomorrow!!!

  • and people wonder how indians talk so fast...

  • Not tring to be rude. Its more than beat boxing or scat singing. Its rythimic carnatic classical music. It takes years of practice and discpline to achieve this.

  • @punkkiranpunk I only wrote that to help people find it who might not know the term konnakol.

  • @cashberg thanks for that

  • @punkkiranpunk

sure beat boxing and scat is something small babies can do!! haha!!

  • WHAT THE.

  • the roots of beatboxin

  • tht is nice

  • konokal my friends.....beautiful

  • lol its almost like a conversation

  • if my mouth moved that fast i'd drum with my teeth!

  • Was expecting a different kind of scat

  • @anujbhatnagar5, please post the links to music that you have produced, arranged, or performed. Otherwise, shut the f**K up!

  • "The Argument" - at 3:35 - so cool :-) hahahaha

  • this rocks! I love it!

  • I see Shawn Lane in there...not surprising considering how great he was. This is amazing stuff!!!

  • They're like the System of a Down of India! Nothing in common except that they are CRAZY!

  • excellent guys !!

  • From 4m 10s to end, Ive heard this section before on a Shakti track - is it the same guy with Shakti ??

  • @Tang37 - Yes, it is :)

  • this is intense and AWESOME! :D

  • This is awsome.

  • how old is this??

  • OMG!!!!!!!!

  • BULLSHIT

  • this is disturbing

  • this is the fastest malbar LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • коннакол

  • Shawn Lane got into some different kind of stuff during the latter part of his life.

  • what exactly are they saying? or is it just a form of beatbox?

  • scat....

  • Normal scat is like just fast rythmic repitition Of Words such as "sha, boo, bee, boop bap bop,bup dap dop doop," blah blah, but Ive never heard indian scat before, so im guessing its the same perspective just in the indian terms of the words i said,

  • Sort of. The syllables they use are specific to the groupings of the notes. Such as ta ka di mi for groups of 4.

  • Not actually...it's way of rhytmh (and melodic) improvising that was invented centuries ago.

Basics = 1= Da ("full note in western music) 2= Taka 3= TakiTa ("triplet") 4= TakaDimi or TakaJuna (accented Ju "shuffle" and 5=Ta Di Gi Na Dum (double Di = 6, double Ta and Di = 7)

With this system you can relatively easily understand polyrhythms and odd time singatures.

  • @RedPetrol76 learnt that at school by my music teacher :)

  • @surenothug it's konakol - vocal percussion.

  • i was waiting for the guitars to join in ....at one point it just sounded like he was saying take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it take it

  • they sound so freakin cool. That must have taken years to get their mouths to move that fast!! That guy with the guitar is laughing the whole time!lol

  • If you feel the need to post some kind of racist bullshit on here, please DIAF instead.

  • Konnakol is so cool! Does anybody know of any other vocal percussion techniques (besides beatboxing, of course)? I know of North Inidan 'bols', but that is as you may know merely a technique for learning how to play tablas.

So, are there any other traditions around the world like this that you know of?

  • I'm a Scatman! :-)

    Very cool!

  • FANTASTIQUE !

  • amazing

  • tadin :-)

  • awesome

  • these guys are great, loved when shawn and jonas played with them, it was magical

  • lol

he just started to scat sing and he is sweating ice cubes

  • hhaha no, they've been playing all night.

  • there is almost an infinite variation of scat, it's mind bogglingly amazing

  • hilariuos

  • thums up.....

  • thts not scat singing...wat they r doing is repeating 'TAAL'... which is an integral part of indian classical music...

  • Yes, I understand that it's not scat singing. The title is meant to convey an approximation of what Konnakol is so that a westerner unfamiliar with it might be interested in checking it out.

  • they did good

  • i use konnokol as my main way for counting rhythm. its really so easy.

  • INDIANS WOULD.

  • rofl so perfect

  • LOL! I Love It! Inspirational :P!

    Ashwin

  • SHAWN LANE

  • Out of this world!! AWESOME

  • funniest shit i ever seen, wtf

  • is this improvised?

  • @sybil721vane most of it. About 90-95% of what you hear in Indian Classical music is improvised. There are some pre-defined sections which form the main theme around which the musicians then improvise.

  • wow, that's amazing!

  • what's "scat"?

  • improvised singing

  • scat singing is vocal improvisation with random vocables and syllables or without words at all

  • Well some of this is probably improvised that's true but some isn't. It's also not random syllables in konnakol but DA for one, DAKA for two, TAKITA for three, TAKADIMI for four and DADIGINADUM for five or something lika that with variations.

  • youre on the internet, look it up.

  • gr8

  • I wanna see the lyrics

  • These guys ought to be lawyers.

  • @SholomGootzeit lol!!!

  • I wanna see the lyrics!!!!! xD

    It's gonna be.... :D xD

  • I'd like to see the Jonas Brothers fuckin' try that...

  • They re-use syllables way too much. their scat consists of about 5 syllables. it sounds really good though.

  • konnakol's more structured than scat - every rhythm has a vocal equivalent

  • it's not about the syllables, it's about how they are accented and create crosses and temporary metric modulations.

  • amazing

  • Its called rhythm you non musicians.

  • That is one of the stupidest things I have ever read.

    Love,

    Aaron

  • i second that

  • what is wrong with you? What you just said doesn't make any senses. lol

  • Just listen to 'The Conference' from Nitin Sawhney's album 'Beyond Skin' - absolutely amazing if you like this.

  • awesome!

  • could someone please tell me the name of this band/ that guy!!! plz

  • Its Jonas Hellborg and the Vinnakrum brothers i think its from the Paris DVD check out Jonas Hellborgs work for music with Konnakol singing especially his albums Icon, Kali's Son, and Good People In Times of evil and MyShawnLaneMusicVideos youtube page

  • its also a method of teaching rhythm without the need for an instrument

  • I wish I had a tongue like that.

  • Are these guys former members of John McLaughlin's Shakti? This is the actual beginning of track La Danse Du Bonheur from 1976 album A Handful Of Beauty..

  • No, i don't believe they are ex-Shakti members. This vocal work isn't unique to these guys, it's how Indian musicians learn the rhythmic cycles used in their music.

  • @conqa:

Well, most members of this group (including the two white guys not singing) have played with McLaughlin. The Indian guy to the left is V. Selvaganesh who played in Remember Shakti. But as cashberg says, this is also traditional Carnatic music (konnakol) from South India.

  • @cashberg Selvaganesh was in shakti actually

  • Dang, now that's pro.

  • This is actually meant to assist in dance, in which the "scat singer" improvises a kind of drum beat based on the movements of the dancer.

  • this is amazin! the first time i seen this i found it kinda funny but now i can just listen to the performance and feel awe! these guys are good they can play a great show and any one can enjoy it! its some of the purest talent around! thanks for posting this! p.s. my mate gave me the shawn lane paris dvd i need to watch it soon!

  • BLAOW

  • that will be a good one for my drums

  • excellent!

  • RoofFiddler...I feel sorry for you. Your narrow and ignorant world-view will cause you pain throughout your life.

  • Actually, no. Your 'racial hypersensitivity' will cause you to menstruate, whine and say "ignorant" whenever someone cracks a harmless joke. Congratulations. You've been programmed accordingly. Now say "ignorant" again and tell everyone how 'open minded' you are.

  • RoofFiddler...There is no such thing as harmless racism, and if you don't already understand that basic truth it's doubtful anything I say will help. But you sound like an intelligent enough person, so I'm confident that you already know quite well just how wrong you are, despite your claims to the contrary.

  • epic win!

  • He must be one hell of a great musician!

  • That is WELL GOOD MAN !! WICKED !..

  • exellent, great,awesome... how can they do something so well from something so simple?!

  • ITS MR T!!

  • Lmao..Nice one !

  • Insanely cool performance.

  • absolutely good can't stop watchin....

  • simply amazing!

  • They look like North Indians but what they say is South Indian rhythmic terms.

  • that was strange..

  • gratz champion that's the point they are using their voice as an instrument see it as a super beatbox if you absolutely need an american term for it.

  • I have respect for these guys! woohoo!

  • They are so intense!

  • 2 things ...one this isnt scating this is indian solfege i think north indian they are using the scales ex. ta ki tuh is 3 ta ka is two, to the one saying this is better than pussy jazz scating..im a jazz singer at newenglandconservatory and i study north indian and south african rythmn and jaz scating is endlessly difficult people shouldnt judge stuff they know nothing about because pussy jazz scatters who know what they are doing will come and eat themtet teh kat ta ga di gina dah my friends.

  • this is so fun to listen to!

  • This is an amazing performance!

Scat singing just makes me smile so much

  • This is awesome!

  • the bomb. exciting to hear such imagination when it comes to rhythm. Western music could use more of that stuff.

  • "Western music could use more of that stuff."

But we know it never will :(

  • @Mapex101 check out Pete Lockett and Steve Smith works if you are interested in kanokkol.
